Man, I really tried. I love the tone, the setting, the mysterious vibes, but I didn't actually like the characters haha. They felt childish and while I know some mystery is there to keep us interested, I needed a bit more to feel invested. Also, the dudes keep saying they are gonna find the stepfather and promise to protect her, buuuuut all we actually see them do is eat breakfast with her, put her to sleep, and obsess over her. Barely any searching to be done, but a ton of posturing.
And I wanted to love the Hallow Fest Nights, but we've had only one night and everyone is supposed to be anonymous, but everyone knows who she is and when she asks who to stay away from she's told The Halloween Boys, but given no way to id them even though everyone else can tell who they are????
Idk it just isn't working for me :(
This happens sometimes where I need to read the sequel before I can decide how I really feel about the first in the series. I read the whole thing, so that's something. Right now, my instincts are saying the best review is, “Disney's Halloweentown but make it smutty.”
If you're a pnr fan, check this one out!
I started reading Ghost on a “sort of” recommendation from a friend! I prefer not to look too much into a story, and I usually skim a blurb. I have been really into PNRs, especially the witch/demon kind, so when the blurb hinted at a demon story, I jumped on it!
I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised! This book was a bit more unique than others I've read in the genre (I'm still new to this genre!) and I loved it. There were moments that felt like they dragged on, but overall I loved the story and plot!
This book is LONG. I originally thought it was much shorter, and I didn't realize it's only book one and I have to waaaaiitttt. But I know it's going to be worth the wait, so you'll catch me pining for the next few months while I twiddle my thumbs LOL.
The character progression of Blythe was amazing! This frail girl, scared and running from her past, has found a home in Ash Grove. She's making friends and finding solace in this month-long halloween festival where people take their costumes a little too seriously. The way she starts to become confident in herself and finds the will to live. And wow! That ending! I wasn't expecting it!
Who doesn't like a spicy story with immortal shifters?!?!
I was obsessed with the little autumn town of Ash Grove and of course the men. Big selling point there.
HOWEVER, the amount of goddamn grammatical and spelling mistakes was so disappointing. I kept getting taken out of the story. If you can look past it, this is a fun read. But I have a degree in English and it was really tempting me to DNF. Its not hard to have even a friend read your story and help edit it. Idk I'm definitely biased.
Oh also the ending was really rushed and predictable.
Quick side note: the troupes were a good time. When one of the guys kept saying “Mine” lawddddddddd.
