I think I would have enjoyed this book more, however in contemporary settings there are 2 things that really piss me off. First, if you are discussing condom usage before having sex, the answer better be yes. This didn't bother me very much until I started reading more and more books with a contemporary setting, and how OFTEN this occurs. HELLO? STD's or pregnancy people? The first time Lily and Max get it on here I forgave it because they had one thing on their minds, so when the condom was brought up later I assumed that one of them would be smart enough to oh, use one. Anyways, this book was interesting in that Lily is not a traditional beauty, in fact she is supposedly quite ugly. She has some issues with it, other people have issues with it. Max has a fear of ugly people, and lets keep in mind that beauty and ugliness is all relative.
So Max has cacophobia, its a real thing, I looked it up. I think its weird, but who am I to judge. Max asks Lily to work for him to help him cope with his phobia, and voila, they get physical and they fall in love. I wanted to believe it. I wanted to like it. In fact, if it werent for the sex, I may have believed it. I felt that that kind of intimacy came too soon, especially since I think that Lily would have been more guarded around Max. But, I think that the overall story, was meant to be hopeful and give people, namely people who think they may be ugly, that they can have love. Or something like that. It could have been better, but it could have been worse.
Afterthought: In the book there is mention that Lily needs to get plastic surgery, which I thought was reprehensible, and her roommate said, I dont think that will make you happy. I think that is right. Being comfortable with yourself is more important than trying to fit in with anyone elses beauty standards. Like I said earlier, this book could have done a better job with the whole ugly girl thing, but it didnt do the worst job.
