Hated myself for waiting this long to read this. Now, due to the cliffhanger, I'm happy I get to instantly gobble up the next book for yet another cliffhanger.... If that makes sense

Holy smokes! What an amazing book! My first in this genre and I'm so happy I picked it up! I was hooked within the first chapter!
Fantasy is hit or miss for me so take this review of the grain of salt. But I wasn't a fan of this book. It dragged on and I probably would have DNF'd it if it wasn't so popular. Even the spice were just meh.
I had a hard time caring about the characters and the world and which they lived.
Wow! Fourth Wing is an absolutely incredible new adult romantasy novel. The first in a series, I can't wait to start Iron Flame. Combining spicy romance with dragons and dystopia, I loved this book! Reminiscent of Divergent, but not derivative. Such a fun read!
Okay but was Xaden hot or not? Hate it when an author leaves key questions unanswered.
Very entertaining and easy to read. The author is a good story teller. There were a ton of characters though which made it hard to really connect or care about the side characters so when things happen to them it didn't really have as big of an emotional impact as I would have liked. I really enjoyed the world of this book, the plot and the two main characters however. I am interested to see where this story goes.
Це просто average “hot” man with big trauma and trust issues.
This book was something I enjoyed and relaxed while reading. It was not a life changing book for me. But I was most deffnelty just in the wrong headspace the last time I read it.
This book managed to be an approximation of a story while being way too long.
The writing voice is cringy. The character development is so clumsy. The world building is minimal.
There are no bigger over arching stakes, no actual plot until the last 5% of the book.
Plus, the romantic pairing is pretty boring, so overall, it's very underwhelming.
(I devoured this and am about to dive into the next one. Yarros's handling of dragons absolutely makes the book; might actually be better than early Anne McCaffrey, and that's saying something. If you like the dragon-having, mildly dystopian kind of fantasy and you haven't read this yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING STRAIGHTEN OUT YOUR LIFE. Leaving the notes I wrote as I was reading for my own edification, but this turned out to be drastically better than I was expecting.)
Ten chapters in: I'm not at all sure this is a fantasy "unlike anything I've read before," as the blurb proclaims, so much as it's Divergent with dragons. And much like Divergent, so far the story beats are pretty predictable. Like many newcomers to the ring, Ms. Yarros's enthusiasm is certainly there but the punches are a bit...telegraphed.
However - let me be clear: I have read most of Veronica Roth's books, and enjoyed them. However, that same enthusiasm in Fourth Wing lends itself to a tighter pacing than Divergent. To fight scenes that crackle with energy, and protagonists who are neither overly powered nor overly preachy (and whose chemistry is, thus far, palpable)
It's not perfect, but my attention has been caught. I'll keep reading (and if my mind changes, will update when done)
***Chapter 16***
NEVER MIND
THIS SLAPS GO READ IT
OH MY GOD I LOVED THIS BOOK. I have not felt the way I felt about this book for too long. I found myself squealing, and laughing, and crying, and kicking my feet. I could not get enough. I adored every single part of this book.
The primary romance reminded me so much of one of my own (remembered fondly in this context).
I developed such strong feelings for all the characters, even minor ones that I cried over them.
I was so invested I convinced two of my friends to read it too and I bought merch before I'd even finished this books.
ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED. I need this novel injected into my veins.
Divergent with dragons and many more detailed sexy parts! I really loved the scenes with the sisters and the descriptions of battle are great. There are too many characters in the beginning it's really hard to keep track until you realize you really don't need to because they probably won't stick around. I'm not sure I'm invested enough to read the next one or four more if she really writes five altogether though.
3.5 really - very fun approachable read with a little too much romance for my taste. Looking forward to reading book two at some point.
I think one of the reasons that I didn't love this, is that I love the Temeraire series so much. Perhaps that is unfair, considering that the books have very little in common other than dragons. However, how Naomi Novik described dragon riding makes so much more sense than the world of Fourth Ring. In the Temeraire books, there is also extensive training for riding a dragon, but it's about using gear to assist you in staying on board, such as straps, saddles etc. It was ridiculous to me that these people were expected to go through what seemed to be a ninja warrior-style gauntlet to prove they could stay on a flying animal they had no experience with, instead of just giving them some riding gear. And the Tairn shows up wearing a saddle! Why would you not just give everyone a saddle from the beginning? The cadet death toll seemed to be entirely avoidable. I was wondering if there was going to be some kind of population control issue, or maybe it's a whole system of government control regarding the threat of conscription into a high-mortality death school, but I guess I'll have to wait for the second book to find out more.
Overall, I enjoyed the story, but I felt it was weak in world-building. I didn't have any clear idea of what their land was like outside of the war college. When Xaden gives Violet a saddle for Tairn, I was honestly wondering where it came from, is there some sort of leather artisan on the premises? This would have been a great spot to use a couple of sentences to flesh out the community they are living in.
My other big issue with the book is that I could not figure out what the dragons were getting out of these bonding relationships. Do they even like the humans? They don't seem to care whether they live or die, even after bonding with them, with a few exceptions regarding our main characters.
I found Violet genuinely annoying. She wants everyone to respect her, but then she does things like insist she be allowed to stay in a battle when she has no experience and has to be practically dragged away. She is also presented as being the smartest cadet in her year, but she lacks any curiosity about why they are there, or why the rebellion happened, or whether the things they are being taught should be questioned - even when evidence is right in front of her.
Also, there is a whole conversation about how we need to hide that feathertails are juvenile dragons, but it is going to be abundantly obvious to everyone when Violet's bonded dragon turns into an adult in a year...
Screaming, crying, punching the air. This book consumed me in all the best ways.
I enjoy dragon rider stories. I haven't read one in many years, but this one brings me back many years to when I read the great books of Anne McCaffrey. I want this to be taken as the great compliment it is meant to be for this author.
I also completely loved listening this this audiobook as a dramatization. Different narrators and sound effects complete the suspense for this tale.
I have part 2 on my holds list, and am anxiously awaiting it's availability.
It feels pretty generic for the genre, but nonetheless a pleasant coffee table read. The world building was okay, some of these characters feel like absolute children, never growing up from their mistakes. Luckily the action scenes were enough to keep me going.
The most well written book? No, but the setting was immersive and who doesn't love fantasy academia vibes. The pacing and story were interesting and I raced through the book easily after a bit of a slow time getting in. I'm a bit indifferent to the dragon aspect personally, but I guess it's better than fae?
The book was great, though too much ‘romantic interest' for the first 3/4. Then the romantic interest resolves into some more graphic sex, and the two main characters can't seem to function without thinking about live and relationship. It generally ruined the book for me.
i LOVED this book so much. Going into it I was skeptical because usually I am not a Fantasy reader at all and this one had me intrigued throughout the whole entire book and I actually cared about the main character and the dragons as well. I definitely will be reading the sequel and more fantasy in general. Overall I am so happy I read this one!
