Coming of age story, perfect for middle grader read and has some theater ties!
-
Callie is in middle school and loves theater! She has both some difficulties in life and onstage. There are some great messages, awesome art, and this book is fun!
as I was reading this book I couldn't help but reminisce about my times in the theater. This book perfectly depicts what it's like working backstage. You can pick this book up at the Colona Public Library. ~Ashley
Telgemeier makes cute art but her plot-creation really leaves something to be desired.
This is such a delightful story and I didn't see it coming that Jesse was also gay. Maybe he was figuring it out offscreen during the story? The middle-school drama is absolutely realistic and believable. And I really like how Callie didn't “end up” with Greg, and how she explicitly called him out for taking her for granted and for not valuing her friendship. The scene where Jesse apologized to Callie for ditching her during the dance was so heartfelt and genuine.
Although the book is meant for teens, I did have a good time reading and was on the edge of my seat till the end.
I did far too much theatre in high school so it's hard for me to be objective. This one left me choked up.
I've been hearing great feedback about this author – mainly that I should read pretty much everything she has come out with. I'm on a bit of a graphic novel kick, so I decided to pick this one up and I was not disappointed.
This is an adorably cute graphic novel. Not only is the artwork cute, but the story itself. I liked how not all the scenes had text which allowed the reader (or encouraged them) to look at the images more and deduce the story and emotions from the drawings. Of course, the illustrations make understanding emotions very clear.
I really liked most of the characters and this is one where I really admired the main character. She has such spunk and passion for drama. She has a hard time with guys, but she sticks up for herself. Honestly, an honest role model. OH! And there is some gay rep... possibly bi-rep as well and all talked about in a decently positive way. <3
I know most have probably already read this book, but I'm still going to recommend it to everyone in case they haven't read it. I also plan on reading more by this author soon!
This is a meringue of a book - light and airy and sweet. Maybe it doesn't have a ton of substance, but it's very enjoyable. Anyone who has been a theater nerd or endured the maddening ambiguity of early teen romance will relate. It evokes very poignantly the feelings of crushes, friendships, and the difficult territory in between.
The art is fun and engaging, and you feel the author's love of theater shining through.
It's nice to see representation of different ethnicities and sexual orientations. Everyone has their own unique character, but kids of all kinds are presented as just part of the gang. Sadly, the LGBTQ+ acknowledgement has earned this book challenges and bans. Just having gay characters is pretty much anathema to so many benighted people, sadly.
This is a one sitting read and kinda adorable where teenage drama is concerned. I love the theatre aspect of it.
Aw, this was great! I loved every little bit of it. Having your tribe, the people who love and accept you for who you are and what you're obsessed with...that best friend that you can laugh and cry with....the heady craziness of mad crushes and the disappointment in rejection (no matter how gentle). I loved that Callie was so passionate. She put herself out there in her work and elsewhere and she was tough. I honestly cannot believe that I live in a country where this book was banned but shrugs people are sad.
This book just gave me the warm fuzzies.
While I did not fall in love with Drama as I did with Smile, it is still a great story. My only problem (and it was me) was that I could not tell the twins apart and it made the story confusing to me at times. It did bring me right back to my middle school years (although I was not a theater person).
