I always include major spoilers (hidden), to help with my memory issues. Read them at your peril!
Enjoyable, enemies to lovers story. Has some fantasy elements. Iris is left alone with her alcoholic motherwhen her brother leaves to fight for the goddess Enva in a war against the God Dacre Iris had to leave school early and work at a newspaper where she is vying with Roman for the position of correspondent . Roman gets the position and Iris' mother dies so she gets a job as war correspondent with a rival newspaper All along she has been unknowingly Communicating with Roman by magical typewriter . Both Iris and Roman end up at the battle front because he has followed her there to keep her safe. In the end Roman is gassed and almost dead and Iris is dragged away by her brother . Left as a cliffhanger, so one star removed as this is irritating.
YA fantasy book about two rival journalists in a wartime setting. Honestly not bad, ends on a huge cliffhanger though!
It's a youthful wartime romance wrapped in magic.
My only issue with it (and the reason I initially wasn't going to finish) is the letter writing is used to tell large chunks of the world's history. The history itself is fine and important to the plot, it just felt lazy to have one character write it out to another character.
I'd still recommend it though. The writing is beautiful and the end will make you wish you had the next book in your hands already.
And now we wait for the next one...
After that gut wrenching ending of a cliffhanger.
I might have gotten into this with very high expectations and set myself up for failure.
I feel like the development of Iris and Romans “love story” was so sudden. Like one day they're writing friendly letters and then the next they love each other so much??
I loved the idea of the typewriter romance but I wish it was executed differently.
Also I'm so sure Forest is hiding some other shady shit and if Roman comes back an evil sexy army general in the next book I will fold
I think the twists kept this book interesting and it did pull me out of an almost slump and for that I am eternally grateful.
I CANT FUCKING BELIEVE THIS ENDING. I HATE HOW THIS ENDED Rebecca Ross I'm not forgiving you for this, do u understand?
My heart is broken. That's it.
I loved this. Wildly unique, easy to follow, with some awesome characters. I adored Roman. I really hope the sequel lives up to this one. More in-depth review sometime soon.
3,5/5⭐️
Ik vond het best lastig om in te komen. Ik had ook niet echt een connectie met de personages. Ik vond het verhaal wel leuk en mooi, maar gewoon niet echt mijn ding....
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS IVE EVER READ. MY HEART IS EMPTY AFTER FINISHING. 26 DECEMBER???? I CANT WAIT THAT LONG.
A beautifully written story. Not typically my style but a beloved author of mine from early works.
As a sister who writes longingly to a missing (passed) brother this book sliced like a knife between my heart and my soul. The emotional hurricane of a mc felt tortured and truthful and brave and required no imagination as often what she wrote or thought felt transpired from mine own. Heartbreaking page upon page. I have few words to describe how this book has left me feeling. But put simply this is the quickest I have read a book in a while, a mere two hours that passed like minutes... thank you for putting your pen to paper as always Rebecca Ross.
That was mostly an okay book. I really liked the letters part and how much they typed on their typewriters. The one thing I didn't like is the ending, cause now I have no desire to read the second book.
I have to be honest I simply had a really hard time getting over the magic typewriters and also a really hard time getting over Roman waiting so long for his dramatique reveal
Clearly a lot of teen readers (and adults) are way into this romance but uhhh it's not for me! ok bye
I feel like I've read a completely different book to every other person who has reviewed this book.....I just don't get the hype at all.
I liked Roman as a character but Iris just felt so flat and I didn't believe how quickly they fell for each other after Iris found it was Roman writing her letters.
The fantasy elements felt so underdeveloped that when they were mentioned they felt out of place for the vast majority of the story. They could have been removed and it barely would have changed anything.
In my opinion, this would have worked better as a historical romance with the typewriters as a magical realism element.
I'm so glad this works for so many people and I'm clearly in the minority, but for me it was just trying to be too much and didn't pull it off.

this book is magical
Ok, I get it now.
This book was beautiful. But really painful.
I need to read her entire backlist.
