Na het schokkende einde van Daughter of Smoke & Bone wist ik dat dit vervolg een donkerder pad zou inslaan, maar dit was zoveel somberder dan ik had verwacht.
“In the cycle of slaughter, reprisal begat reprisal, forever.”
Dit was echt een boek over oorlog, en de manier waarop Laini de frustratie, uitputting en hopeloosheid die soldaten kunnen voelen over hun tragische situatie, wist over te brengen is ontzettend goed gedaan.
Het plot is vol geweld, bloed en brutaliteit. Sterrenlicht wordt slechts sporadisch gezien, vooral in de vorm van Zuzana & Mik. Het was een heel goede beslissing om Karou's beste vriendin bij het verhaal te blijven betrekken. Het zorgde niet alleen voor een noodzakelijke verlichting van de somberheid, maar het verhoogde tegelijkertijd de inzet voor Karou en hielp haar haar perspectief terug te vinden.

Romantiek heeft zo goed als geen rol in de plot van dit tweede boek, wat lezers die op zoek zijn naar het vervolg van de verboden romance uit het eerste boek kan afschrikken. Desalniettemin vond ik enorm veel romantiek in de prachtige schrijfstijl, die zo ongelofelijk mooi en poëtisch is, ondanks het verhaal vol duisternis en gevaar.
Ook de wereldopbouw en de ontwikkeling van de personages zijn indrukwekkend. Alles voelt echt en complex aan.
“Life is your master, or death is,” Brimstone had said, but in these days of blood, there was no luxury of choice.”
Al met al een onverwacht vervolg, maar op de beste manier. Ik kan niet wachten om te zien hoe dit verdergaat en eindigt!
No me ha gustado tanto como el primero, ya que se nota que es un libro donde te van preparando para el último de la saga. Aún así me ha pareceido entretenido y una buena forma de conducirnos al final de la trilogía. ¡Y por fin Karou y Akiva están juntos de nuevo!
I enjoyed the first book in this series but I had my issues with it. This one on the other hand was much much better in my opinion. It felt more grown up.
I cannot wait to read the final book in this series.
En un principio sentí que daba demasiadas descripciones y que la cosa no avanzaba, pero hubo momentos que salvaron el libro. Las partes finales fueron las más duras de leer, me dejaron temblando.
Livro lento e arrastado! Ainda que a escrita da autora seja linda, há muita palha neste livro. Valeu muito a pena pelas últimas 100 páginas.
