This book is a testament to masterful storytelling, particularly in terms of its world-building and expert use of breadcrumbing. The author has skillfully expanded the universe introduced in the first book, adding layers of depth and intrigue that transport readers into a vividly realized fantasy world.
The attention to detail in the world-building is nothing short of remarkable. Every element, from the intricate political landscape to the rich cultural backdrops, is crafted with such care that the world feels alive and teeming with possibilities. This immersive environment serves as the perfect backdrop for the unfolding story, enhancing the reader's experience.
Moreover, the author's use of breadcrumbing is executed with finesse. Instead of revealing everything all at once, the story unfolds gradually, with clues and mysteries sprinkled throughout the narrative. This approach keeps readers engaged and guessing, eagerly turning pages to piece together the puzzle.
And it stands out not just for its compelling plot and character development, but for how it expertly lays down a trail of breadcrumbs, leading to revelations that are both surprising and satisfying. The world-building and breadcrumbing together create a rich tapestry that entices readers to dive deeper into this enchanting universe.
This book is a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts. It not only builds upon the foundation of its predecessor but also sets new standards in creating a captivating fantasy world and a narrative that keeps you hooked until the last page.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book while I was listening to it, but also found myself forgetting about it as soon as I was done. Still, I'd like to keep reading the series.
This was definitely more engaging than the first book. And I now understand why all the fan universe theories exist. While I don't think this series will end up falling in my “best series” list, I can see why it does for other people.
Perfect second book! I loved the direction of the plot, the character development of the core group of characters, and the big reveals. Can wait to see the progression in the next book!
Crown of Midnight felt a heck of a lot slower than Throne of Glass. I had to take a few breaks to read other books. But once I got to about 70%, the action ramped up and I got re-invested. Loving the character development the most, and the secrets being slowly revealed.
I'm buddy reading this entire series with Destiny this year. I put off reading this series for the longest time and now that I have finally started it I wish I would have read it earlier. This book is where I really started to get sucked into the story and I admit that mostly has to do with the romance.
While Celaena still comes off a little bit conceited it's nowhere near as bad as it was in the first book and the novellas. She very flawed and she jumps into things without fully thinking things through but I feel her growing a little bit with each book I read. AS for Chaol ugh I love him so much but at the same time he does some really stupid things but I feel like the consequences for those mistakes were way over dramatic and not deserved.
Sarah J. Maas is doing a great job at giving me what I am wanting just to rip it away from me a few chapters later. She's toying with me and while I'm so annoyed I'm also loving it. I can't wait to finish out this series because I really want to know what happens with all of the main characters.
4,5/5⭐️
Weer een mega goed boek! Er gebeurd zo veel in deze boeken dat ik niet kan kiezen wat ik moet beoordelen. Gewoon mega goede plot en spannend verhaallijn.
Ik ga snel de rest lezen!
3.5 (wish we could give half stars).
This was so much better than Throne of Glass but not quite a 4 star yet.
I have high hopes though.
1 ⭐️ Didn't like it all.
2 ⭐️ Wasn't worth the read, was boring or problematic to me.
3 ⭐️ Fair or good read. Fun but nothing profound. May have interesting characters, themes or plot items. May have flaws but I can overlook them.
4 ⭐️ Good or great read.
5 ⭐️ Perfect or as near to as possible.
Secret tunnels, magical doorknobs, anagrams and riddles, witches in a traveling carnival, and a magical language that can open portals to other worlds. This is what I love about fantasy. I read through this book with childlike wonder. I loved this book. Maas's sequels are always the best in the series for me. I can't believe I get to read 5 more. :))
I debated long and hard whether to give this book 5 stars, mostly because I was unfairly comparing it to other great books from other genres and age groups.
The truth is, as far as young adult fantasy goes, this book is one of the best I have ever read.
The plot is engaging and twisted, the stakes are high, the characters are surprisingly well developed and the world building is damn good. Not to mention, there are some semi-horror elements, which were executed to perfection and I loved! Oh, and quite a few things that I scoffed at after reading book one now make sense - I am genuinely impressed.
As always, I didn't much care about the romance, but I think it's just me, and in all honesty, it wasn't too much. Now, mind you, if you're not familiar with Sarah J Maas, she likes to be messy when it comes to romance, so be prepared.
All in all, I am enjoying this series way more than I thought I would.
Someone tell me how this book was published nearly 10 years ago and I somehow managed to not be spoiled by the major reveal at the end of it?
This series is SO good that I don't even have comprehensive thoughts. Just vibes that I love it. And that I'm scared for the future and the characters I like.
Crown of Midnight was a great sequel to Throne of Glass!
I was afraid that I wouldn't like this book, as I didn't like A Court of Thorns and Roses sequel and others.
This entire series is a very interesting so far, and I am looking forward to the third book, (which I plan to start tonight!)
The way the relationships between Celaena and Choal and Celaena and Dorian change and grow is incredible. I have to say that I love both Dorian and Choal, but I definitely prefer Choal and Celaena as a couple!
——SPOILER BELOW——
I absolutely SOBBED when Nehemia was murdered, and again when Celaena attacked Choal. It was heartbreaking, the realization that those that had kidnapped Choal weren't going to try to save her, and poor Celaenas reaction.
holy shit
+ also i'm trying my very best to like chaol but he's really getting on my nerves
In my opinion, this is the true start of the series. Throne of Glass gets you hooked, but this book is when the pieces start falling. I LOVE this series so much!
Final rating: 5 stars ✨
Reread: 2025
First read: 2022
Despite bestie Destiny saying this one is slow and her least favorite...
5 stars.
I liked it better than the first one. Things start to come together. My prediction came to fruition. I enjoyed it!
Can't wait to see what happens next!
Also at this point I am still a Dorian stan and hate Chaol.
