I thought I might be losing interest in this series after I didn't get hooked on the second book like I fell in love with the first one but that was not the case here because I'm obsessed. The way it brings everyone together and then set up the next part of the story is delicious. There were plot twists that I didn't see coming but made absolute sense and I was like woah.
˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ literally the best one so far.... cress and thorne are my new comfort characters ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
I imagined myself rating this 5 stars but I'm not quite sure anymore. I wish it ended with a Cress and Thorne moment but I guess it isn't always possible. Without all of that, it is a 5 star read.
This is by far the best book in the Lunar Chronicles, I absolutely LOVE Cress and Thorne.
Carswell Thorne is an amazing character, I really liked his easy going nature since he was introduced. But even with an awkward Cress he manages to treat her right and the banter is just amazing.
They made me laugh and cry a good amount of times. They are lovely and I NEED more Cress and Thorne moments.
3.5 Stars
This book handles its various perspectives very very well. The momentum carries between different character's POVs and it works out really well!I found the climax really compelling though! Everything plot and world related worked really well for me. I think the middle of this book was a little dry and felt frustratingly slow. I think it led to a lot of romance and cute stuff but I'm not normally a huge fan of romance especially YA romance so I was just not super into it. I also found it annoying that Scarlet and Wolf were relegated to the sidelines and were left as plot devices even though we just came out of their book. For those reason Cress gets a 3.5
I didn't particularly like Cress as a character. She was a little too naive for me, but this is fitting for her in her circumstances so it's not a bad thing, it just didn't make her very relatable to me. Her interactions with Thorne were GREAT though. Absolute love!!
I love that Cinder gets a full crew of people who support her and help her out. It's great! And Iko is just THE ABSOLUTE BEST!
So beautiful and alot of crying and emotional stress that it drives you inside the world of lunar and earth ❤❤
I'm giving it 4 stars only for the ending. I had been waiting for the Cinder and Kai reunion.
Cress was SO, SO annoying at some points in the book. Ok, I get it, she's been trapped on that satellite for a lot of time, but that doesn't mean she needs to be that annoying and naive and ughhhh.
I really hope that the last book will be better than these ones, I had high hopes for this series but it just doesn't live up to my expectations.
This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: Cress
Cress is the story of Rapunzel if Rapunzel were a sheltered lunar hacking expert. Stolen from her parents at a young age, Cress is a lunar shell locked away to live out her days as Sybil's best programmer. That is until Cinder launches a plan to save her and further the team's goals of overthrowing Levana. In the third installment of The Lunar Chronicles, join the characters you've come to know and love as they race to save Emperor Kai and the people of Earth.
Cress' character might weigh on some reader's nerves with her damsel in distress behavior, but Marissa Meyer makes sure to add a bit of humor in about it. Cress has never experienced true social interaction, growing up in front of port screens and entertained by a programmed version of herself to keep company. She is lonely, and lives in a fantasy world she builds for herself until she meets Cinder's crew. Imagine if you grew up only learning about other people from romance novels and TV. You can quickly see how Cress might behave when these are the only role models she had. I let it slide that she was near helpless most of the time. Especially because I have seen how Cinder has evolved as a character.
The only downside was the lack of balance between characters. The storyline was engaging, but there wasn't enough page time for everyone. I had a feeling this might happen, as each book is set to introduce a new main character. There are only so many pages to cram them all in. Scarlet took a huge backseat in this story and it left me unsettled. Especially after the huge build-up of her character from the last book. I wanted to see more of her.
Throughout this series, readers have seen more and more of Levana's cruelty show through. Marissa Meyer peels back another layer in this book, leaving readers poised on the edge of their seat as it unfolds. But Cress still maintains its status as being an appropriate young adult book. With each addition to The Lunar Chronicles, I am further entranced by the seamless blending of fairy tales and steampunk attributes. I honestly haven't seen another series like this one. I love it!
This book starts a few days after Scarlet ended and is a Rapunzel retelling while still having all of the previous characters in it so it's like all of the fairytales come together. Anyways I am still really enjoying this series.
Lets talk about the newest character first. At first she comes off a little stalkerish and weird which given her circumstances I kind of understand but the level of love she has for a character that she hadn't met yet was just weird. She did grow on me though.
Then we have characters from previous book. Scarlet and Wolf which I still love but something happens in this book and Wolf is not himself and while I understand I felt like he was being kind of selfish in a sense. Then there's Cinder and Kai which again I still love but Cinder really needs to stop going back and forth at this point. Her emotions are all over the place. I can't really explain why she is bothering me and emotions doesn't seem like the right word but whatever.
Then there's Thorne and he's still his same old self but I do wish he would open himself up and stop denying how he feels for a certain character. Also Iko!! between Iko and Thorne I got a few good laughs out of this book.
This book once again ends on a cliffhanger and since I don't currently have Winter I am really annoyed. I want to find the book with the same covers I already have but so far I haven't had any luck.
Overall still loving this series and I can't wait to read the final book in this series. I hope everyone has a happy ending lol.
This is fast becoming my favorite series of this year. I am really loving this fairy tale retelling. These characters, the action, the romance, absolutely love all of it.
Forever obsessed with this series and the detail that's gone into this whimsical fairytale retelling. The beginning of this one was a little slow for me, but once it picked up, I had to know what happened. As always.
4.5 stars.
I had SUCH a fun time with this! This book's biggest strength is its action/pacing. This series has done an excellent job of ratcheting up the action book by book. This one is quite action-packed compared to Cinder, which I got bored with in a few places. I loved how much we got to see the rest of the setting; to bring up Cinder again, I felt that the setting of New Beijing was basically wasted, and I feel that that was kind of fixed in Scarlet. I was happy to see that fixed with Cress. We got to see so many places and get a real sense of life in this world, as well as on Luna!
I also really, really liked Cress as a main character. Her voice and personality are so unique amidst the others in the group (Scarlet, Wolf, Cinder, Thorne, Iko), and it was refreshing to have someone in the mix who isn't sarcastic, snarky, or cynical. Cress adds a necessary dimension to the character spread, and it's fun to see the different characters interact with her and react to how different she is. I also love Jason Clay!
The Cress/Thorne romance was just...okay. Can I just say it? I don't like Thorne that much. I loved him interacting with Cress in the desert (that was easily the best part of their romance), but after that, it went downhill. I like a character who breaks the tension with humor, but a lot of times it's like he's unaware there is any tension at all. The one exception I can remember is the exchange between him and Jason Clay (“Where's my gun?” “I've got it.” “Can I have it back?” “Nope.”). That shit cracked me up.
Anyway, the Cress/Thorne romance needs some serious development/maturity. Throughout, Cress is a perfectly devoted little angel, and he's...well, he's Thorne. I'd love to see Cress mature out of the fangirl love for him, and I'd love to see Thorne develop some sensitivity and self-awareness. UGH I WAS WAITING FOR HIM TO TELL HER HE ISN'T REALLY A CAPTAIN, BUT HE DIDN'T! In a good romance, both people need to grow as a result of being with each other. Cress has definitely evolved the most of the two. He allows her to put him on a pedestal, but when is he going to do the same for her? Yeah, he said she has a beautiful singing voice, but what else? I'm not really convinced he likes her all that much, if I'm being honest. It seems more of a convenience thing, not a conscious choice. It's certainly not the worst romance in a book. More often than not, it's very sweet and squishy and all that. I just don't love it the way other people seem to. Thorne is easily my least favorite character. There's time for more development, though! I'd love to be in the camp of Thorne fans, but as of now, I'm not there yet.
Regarding the other romances, I'm thrilled with the development of Cinder and Kai. Prior to Cress It felt a bit too much like “she's-Cinderella-and-he's-the-prince-so-it-kinda-has-to-go-this-way.” However, I LOVED their scene at the end! It felt totally earned, and so sweet! And of course, I really enjoy Scarlet and Wolf together. I liked his characterization in reaction to Scarlet's absence.
DR. ERLAND AND CRESS. THAT WHOLE SCENE. YOU KNOW THE ONE. DAMN.
ANYWAY, I'm very excited for Winter! A lot of other YA books tend to sag toward the middle of their series, but with The Lunar Chronicles, it's been the opposite! I can't wait to see where it goes from here!
A great 3rd book! The first half was uneven but the second half amped everything up in a fun heist plot that I am here for!
I have been working my way slowly through this series, I am determined to get there by the end of 2017 and so although I was a little hesitant I decided to press on and read Cress, the third instalment of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.
This fairytale telling series has been hugely popular since its release but I have struggled a little with the first two books. Although containing elements of the different fairytales upon which they are based, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood and in the case of Cress - Rapunzel, the setting has really stretched the boundaries in this series with it being set in a futuristic world where humans are battling against a deadly plague and the ongoing threat from a race known as Lunar's who live on another planet.
The series continues in book 3 with our ongoing heroine Cinder still on the run from the authorities, along the way she has gathered a band of misfits who are helping her to come to terms with the fact she is, in fact, Lunar and to help her to stop the evil Queen Levana from carrying out her plan to marry the emperor Prince Kai and then have him killed. This time around she meets Cress, a prisoner on board a satellite floating through space. With no contact with anyone, her job is to monitor the activities of the rulers on earth and to feed their actions back to the Lunar Queen.
Cress, fulfilling the Rapunzel role, is an interesting addition to the cast of Lunar Chronicles characters. Naive and a little immature at the outset of the book she grows throughout this novel as her story loosely follows the Rapunzel tale. She is likeable and the burgeoning romance between her and Captain Thorne is really wonderful, this brash and cocky captain is not always subtle or romantic but he is so very kind to Cress and her adoration of him is sweet to read about.
This instalment of the series is the longest so far, coming in at over 500 pages Meyer is really packing in a lot of plot to this book. I think with Scarlett that had been one of my reservations, that the story didn't seem to move forward as far as I'd hoped. This time around the plot is more developed. We see more of life on Lunar and learn more about the Royal family there which sets us up for the next book in the series.
I enjoyed this book more than I anticipated I would. Sometimes I find all the spaceships and cyborgs and tech a little bit of a distraction to the parts of the book I enjoy, the real fairy tale retelling parts and at times this has caused me frustration but this time around I managed to put that aside a little more and enjoy the story behind the setting. I am glad I'm persevering with the series but am now keen to read the final instalment and conclude everyone's stories as it now feels about time all the threads started to come together towards its natural conclusion.
Eeekeeeeekkkk I could NOT stop reading this one. The intensity seemed to increase in each installment. Immediately going from this one on to Winter.
While this one had way more pages than Scarlet, I would say I rarely felt a drag or thought to myself “wow this feels so long”
Wonderful story.
Wish I had written this review sooner! Whoops, forgot most of what I wanted to say.
What an ending! I can't wait for the next one, I'm going to pick it up A.S.A.P. !
