Reading Cosmos put me in awe of the universe we live in. Sagan gives a sense not only of the enormity, but of the way it has evolved and is still evolving. It is a system that was born from the laws of physics and a large mass of hydrogen atoms with some energy. And now we have stars going through life and death cycles, and also now we have complex ecosystems on Earth, including us - the humans who look up and wonder.
Sagan uses the history of science and the development of astronomy to add an extra layer to the book: it's not just an astronomy book. (If it were, the fact that it's out of date on some points due to being 40 years old would subtract from the book, but it doesn't.) Because more than a book about astronomy, it felt like a book about science: the role scientific pursuit has played in society, in development of civilization. How it interplays with religion, imperialism, slavery. Cosmos is inspirational - it almost makes me want to stop what I'm doing and go off and become a scientist.
I first watched Cosmos when I was no older than 5, PBS has always had a love affair with Carl Sagan and the Cosmos program became the most widely watched piece of public media in the world. I, among countless others, can credit Cosmos with turning my attention to the stars. It is a piece of media so finely produced that even now, almost 45 years later, it's a staple of Middle and High School science classes the world around. I can gush for hours about the television program, but this is my first time reading Cosmos, and to my ignominy my first time reading Carl Sagan.
This is yet another foundational text that I am very happy to have finally sat down to read. I didn't realize how much of the message of Cosmos I had internalized through a childhood of rewatches; reading Cosmos was rediscovering the seeds of a lifetime of shower thoughts. There is a surfeit of information contained within 439 pages, containing the history of scientific advancement by the human race and a thorough accounting of our understanding of the universe as it stood in 1980. Sagan trudges across the centuries, takes us on a jaunt through the solar system, and points the way forward- toward the ever-expanding sky.
Reading Cosmos was just as moving as the first time I watched it; I know now why I always find myself tearing up when observing the stars on a clear night. Contained within these pages are cautious optimism, an unshakable belief in the spirit of discovery, and a humanist esprit de corps through scientific advancement. If science had a holy book I think it would be Cosmos; there is more to Cosmos than scientific information, there is a dream of a world saved by science, a crowded universe waiting for us to make our debut would we not just get our collective shit together.
Cosmos is a sober accounting of all of our achievements, and all of our missteps on the road to a world collective. For every triumphal step humanity took forward, we took several bloody and ignorant steps back, and Sagan rightly condemns the diseases of the human condition. Cosmos is steadfast in its condemnation of war and religion, the tales of Copernicus, of Hypatia; literal parables of the dangers of ignorance and blind faith. Where he condemns and tears down the old and new orders of fear and control, he replaces that expired world view with faith in the observable universe and our chosen tool of observation, the scientific method. Sagan preaches, and while I typically roll my eyes when any sermon is directed my way, I have to say that this message is the only one that would serve to improve the human condition. There is a philosophy contained in Cosmos, one that hopes to go beyond the understanding facade of our current enlightened age and achieve the dreams of those first few who looked to the stars and wondered. We should all embrace a philosophy that would put down our differences and guide us to the next step, are we not all the same when considered from a Cosmic perspective? Afterall:
The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.

কসমস প্রথমত কার্ল সাগানের একটা বিখ্যাত টিভি ধারাবাহিক। বিষয়বস্তু আমাদের মহাবিশ্ব। বইটি কিছুটা তার লিখিত সংস্করণ।
কসমস (cosmos) শব্দটি গ্রীক, অর্থ শৃঙ্খলা, chaos এর বিপরীত শব্দ এটি। মহাবিশ্বের শৃঙ্খলার সৌন্দর্য বইটির উপজীব্য।
বইটির তথ্যগুলোর কথা বলতে গেলে যারা সমসাময়িক বিজ্ঞানের সব খবর রাখেন তাদের কাছে পুরনো খবর তবে এখনো প্রাসঙ্গিক সাধারণ মানুষের জন্য। আর শুধু বিজ্ঞান না, বিজ্ঞানের ইতিহাসও বেশ চমৎকারভাবে উঠে এসেছে। উঠে এসেছে আমাদের পূর্বপুরুষদের প্রজ্ঞা যা ধর্মীয় ও ভাববাদী দর্শন বারবার দমন করতে চেয়েছে। ব্যক্তিগতভাবে বিজ্ঞানচর্চার ইতিহাস আর সাগানের চমৎকার লেখনীর জন্য বইটা আমার ভালো লেগেছে।
উঠে এসেছে নানান কথা। তবে সবগুলোই বুঝি কেন্দ্রে রাখলো আমাদের পরিচয়। এই মহাবিশ্বে আমরা কী, কতটুকু ক্ষুদ্র, কতটুকু মূল্যবান, কতটুকু ক্ষমতা আমাদের এই বিষয়গুলো উঠে এসেছে বৈজ্ঞানিক সত্যের সাথে। প্রাসঙ্গিকভাবেই উঠে এসেছে মানুষ নিজের ক্ষুদ্রতা অস্বীকার করতে, কোনো ঐশ্বরিক স্বত্তার মান বজায় রাখতে কীভাবে বিজ্ঞানের বিরুদ্ধে দাঁড়ায়।
মানুষ খুব আত্মকেন্দ্রিক স্বাভাবিকভাবে। সমাজ নেহায়েতই দায়ে পড়ে তৈরী করা। তাই নিজেকে সৃষ্টির সেরা জীব হিসেবে দেখার ইচ্ছে প্রবল। কিন্তু বিজ্ঞান কোনো ব্যক্তি কেন, কোনোকিছুরই ধার ধারে না। যারা সত্যসন্ধানী তাদের কাছে ক্ষুদ্রতা পীড়াদায়ক না। তাদের চোখে মহাবিশ্ব তার সমস্ত সৌন্দর্য নিয়ে ধরা দেয়। যেমন টলেমি বলেছেন, “Mortal as I am, I know that I am born for a day. But when I follow at my pleasure the serried multitude of the stars in their circular course, my feet no longer touch the Earth. . .”
সাগান বারবার চেষ্টা করেছেন সত্যের সৌন্দর্যের স্বাদ দিতে।
আমাদের দেশে, এবং বোধহয় সারাবিশ্বেই সাধারণ মানুষ বিজ্ঞান সম্পর্কে কম জানেন। অন্তত বিজ্ঞানের দর্শন আমাদের দেশে প্রচণ্ড অবহেলিত একটা বিষয়। লোকে বিজ্ঞান বিভাগে চিকিৎসক বা প্রকৌশলী হতে পড়ে। সাধারণ মানুষ জানে বিজ্ঞানে ফ্যান চলে, বাতি জ্বলে। এই বইটায় বিজ্ঞানের দর্শন বলা হয়েছে সহজবোধ্যভাবে।
“There is no other species on Earth that does science. It is, so far, entirely a human invention, evolved by natural selection in the cerebral cortex for one simple reason: it works. It is not perfect. It can be misused. It is only a tool. But it is by far the best tool we have, self-correcting, ongoing, applicable to everything. It has two rules. First: there are no sacred truths; all assumptions must be critically examined; arguments from authority are worthless. Second: whatever is inconsistent with the facts must be discarded or revised. We must understand the Cosmos as it is and not confuse how it is with how we wish it to be. The obvious is sometimes false; the unexpected is sometimes true.”
ভাববাদী দর্শনের রক্ষাকর্তারা, বিশেষ করে ধর্মপ্রচারকরা মানুষের মূল্যবোধের জন্য ধর্ম অপরিহার্য, বিজ্ঞান অব্যবহারযোগ্য বলেন প্রায়শই। বিজ্ঞান মূল্যবোধ সৃষ্টি করতে অপারগ, কেননা এটি তার কাজ না। তবে এই জ্ঞান আমাদের মূল্যবোধগত সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার জন্য আরো নিঁখুত তথ্য দিতে পারে, তার ব্যবহারে দিতে পারে সাবলীলতা। আর ধর্ম? গুণে দেখবেন, ধর্ম ও জাতীয়তাবাদ কত মানুষের মৃত্যুর কারণ এ পর্যন্ত। কার্ল সাগান এই বইতে বিজ্ঞানী হিসেবে তার নিজস্ব মূল্যবোধ জানিয়েছেন,
“But the Darwinian lesson is clear: There will be no humans elsewhere. Only here. Only on this small planet. We are a rare as well as an endangered species. Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious. If a human disagrees with you, let him live. In a hundred billion galaxies, you will not find another.”
লক্ষ্য করুন পাঠক, আপনার ক্ষুদ্রতা সত্ত্বেও আপনি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, তেমনি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ আপনার বিরুদ্ধচারী মানুষটি। এমনকি কোনো কারণই হত্যার জন্য যথেষ্ট নয়। এই মানবিকতা একদিন মহাবৈশ্বিকতায় পৌঁছে যাবে আমাদের বৈজ্ঞানিক সত্যদর্শনের আলোকে।
আগেই বলেছি, বইয়ের লেখা সাবলীল ও আকর্ষণীয়। এটা হচ্ছে সেইধরণের বই যা প্রত্যেকের পড়া উচিত। প্রত্যেকের।
This book should be mandatory reading in all schools. Heck, everyone needs to read this book.
