I am glad Erin and I have finally finished reading this series. I enjoyed it enough to want to keep reading to find out what happened but it was definitely drug out. This is a 6-book series and I personally think it could have easily been cut back to a trilogy. With that said I have to say this last book was probably the best of all of them. There was a lot happening in this book right from the very beginning. It's fast paced and action packed. There were some things that happened in this book that I didn't see coming and some things I did. And something pulled at my heartstrings. I'm not 100% happy with how things wrapped up but at the same time it's a good ending for a lead up to the next books. Overall I enjoyed some parts of this series and was annoyed by others but I am looking forward to continuing on with the next books in this world.
Omg!!!!! I'm both happy and sad that I've finally finished the series, but this was an amazing conclusion to the story!! I can't wait to continue on with more books in this world!!
The Epilogue deserves the four stars man..
The story completely was not that mind blowing. It was an average 3 star with the same dramas between the characters. Finishing this book gave an overwhelming feeling though. Loved the characters of Julian Blackthorn and of course Emma Carstairs. I literally was crying only at the mention of the characters from TID. Clay and Jace were as sappy as always.
Y SALEN MIS BABY BLACKTHORNS. LOS AMO.
It's easy to forget how grand this book is. I know it's a big one, but it's also a bit old by now. I first read it five years ago, and much has happened in the Shadow World since. But this one just kind of knocks all other Shadowhunter books (so far) out of the park with its grandeur, the overall epicness of the story. Whether it's the best conclusion is up for discussion, but it is undoubtedly the most epic of the conclusions so far. I suspect that The Wicked Powers will be even grander, since QOAAD is already in its own VERY GRAND but has a few aspects to it where it falls short next to CoHF (mainly being that it feels more like a middle book rather than a conclusion - because it isn't.)
The first half of this book is the best half. It sets up the end incredibly well and gives a lot of needed character moments (all though many more important ones happen in the second half) and overall the first half of the book is just so incredibly good. And the only reason why I find it better than the second half of the book, is because in the second half, the setting has changed, which can sometimes distract the reader, who is now trying to familiarize themselves with new surrounding. But that is also it, the only reason why I personally find the first half better. Although, when I say better, we're talking very minor things anyway, like it's really not something that matters that much.
The book is fantastic overall, an incredible conclusion to this six book story. I know it is sort of its own trilogy, but I think this also counts as a conclusion for all of them, just like I believe the conclusion of The Wicked Powers will feel like the conclusion of The Dark Artifices too.
There is so much of Emma and the Blackthorns in this book, so much more than I remembered there would be, and so much more context for me to absorb, context I hadn't picked up on as much the first time I read it. It's of course easier to spot because I've already read TDA, but it still gave me so much joy as well as despair to see Emma and the Blackthorns as such small children, setting them up so well for TDA, as well as setting up the rest of the books to come.
The epilogue was just wonderful. We finally got that goddamn wedding we've been waiting for, and I'm so incredibly excited to go into Shadowhunter Academy so soon after this. I have so much love and fondness for this world and its characters, and I applaud Clare endlessly for continuing to write them simply because she wanted to, and ignoring the people who told her to stop.
I loved it, loved it, loved it. So, so, so good.
With hope.
Ok this was a nice adventure but I felt all the way that the action was sometimes waaaaaay too slow. And even if some elements and characters constructions are really great I felt that we never really get to something true and maybe sometimes more simple.
Anyway I really enjoyed this ending and feel like she is way more comfortable with giving closure.
I am really proud of myself, after a very long time of promising to read The Mortal Instruments series I have in the last few months managed to work my way through all 6 books and can now finally understand what all the hype is about with this story.
It's been a really long journey from City of Bones to City of Heavenly Fire and along the way we have fallen in love with some wonderful characters, hated others and had lots of shouting at the pages moments. This book had to pull together all the strands of Jace and Clary's story and bring them to a conclusion and give us a satisfying feeling about their endings together.
The first really exciting thing in this book was the introduction of new characters from the Los Angeles institute. Emma Carstairs is the heroine of Clare's newer series The Dark Artifices and to see her story introduced in Heavenly Fire was lovely and I liked her immediately. I love that we have been given a glimpse of what is to come and I feel as I begin to read Lady Midnight it will be lovely to enhance her story and watch it grow.
I also loved the merging of Infernal Devices favourites in this book, for most people The Infernal Devices holds a special place in their hearts and to have their involvement in this story was so exciting and the parts of the book in which they featured were some of the real high points in this story and made it even more special.
As for our main cast they are all front and centre in this story and are still trying desperately to chase down and stop Clary's evil brother Sebastian who is trying to wage war on the Shadowhunters. From this perspective I have to be honest I am glad to see the end of this story. At points I felt it was never going to end. I have truly loved the stories of many of the characters in these books, Simon Lewis is a bonafide legend and I hold a special place for him and this book really brought his story full circle. Whether I felt it was the best ending for him I'm not quite sure, I can understand the idea Clare had but I loved my Daylighter and I'm a little unsure as to whether this was the right ending for my beloved vampire.
I am thrilled to see Alec and Magnus also reach a place where they are at peace with their relationship and ready to move forward into the future. They have been an absolute joy in this series, by far my favourite couple. You just root for them. Magnus Bane is one of Clare's most masterful creations and I could read about him all day long. I love the way we introduced the premise for The Bane Chronicles novel and I am excited now to read Magnus' stories from his 400 year long life.
The ending of this series was eminently satisfying and a wonderful conclusion where all the loose ends were tied up neatly whilst paving the way for The Dark Artifices to begin. On the whole I liked this series but I certainly didn't love it in the same way I did The Infernal Devices, there are characters I loved but equally others who didn't set me alight. I only gave it 4 out of 5 because fundamentally it is not the equal of The Infernal Devices books but it was still one of the strongest books of this series.
Eventually!! I feel like I've been reading this series for ages and have eventually finished it. It's just not for me anymore so I found this quite tedious to get through. I think I've just outgrown the series now, but glad I finished it off!
Meh. I felt like the series-long storylines were tidied up too easily, and that a large portion of this book was aimed at setting up for her new series. I like this universe but I'm done for now.
The massive conclusion to this series was fitting, I believe. I spent the last six or seven hours straight in bed, reading it. At this point I've become so invested in the characters that I'm not even sure I'm fit to give a review based on the book's quality. But I guess that in itself is an indicator, isn't it? I was more or less satisfied with the endings that each of them received. I am a sucker for happy endings, and I appreciated the fact that Clare lingered on this book's ending in order to give everyone the closure I felt they deserved.
As far as how the book is written itself: still simple and yet managing to yank the emotion out of me. As always, the dialogue and characters are what keep me in this series. The prose is mostly unremarkable, the plot devices somewhat cliche or verging on deus ex machina, but after six books–three and a half of which focus on fighting the same villain–there's only so much new material to come up with. The romantic scenes are, as always, steamy and compelling, which is half of why I suspect this series is so popular. As Clare experiments more with multiple perspectives later on in the series, I find myself appreciative of getting new views from different characters, especially those who have grown in importance from the beginning of the series.
I will say that the POV from Emma Carstairs annoyed me. It was a really obvious ploy to segue more easily into Clare's next planned series/cash cow in the Shadowhunter universe, and I found myself wanting to skip Emma's parts because I was reading this book to find out what happened to the Lightwoods, Jace, Clary, Simon, &etc., not about these new children being introduced.
In the end, despite how skeptical this review ends up sounding, I loved this book and this series, period. And I'll probably reread them again some day soon.
A fitting end to this amazing series.
I read them all over the last 2 weeks, could hardly put them down.
And the early ones I re-read, because I read them soon after release.
Truly addictive reading and amazing world building.
Me in two words after reading COHF : SO EMOTIONAL.
I love everything about this end (though i hate the e- word) and everything was just GREAT. What I really enjoyed was that there was in fact plenty of references about the four Cassandra Clare series : that was a bit like a super remastered crossover series, haha. So enjoyable.
Eventually, The Mortal Instruments worked like a painting : all you ever see out is dot and shapes, while you learn from the details and the dots and shapes finally become incredibles stories and memories. This is that metaphor that makes me believe this series is so much more than the average : you build your imagination in such an amazing and efficient foundation here. I really can say now that City of Heavenly Fire was by far one of the best creative rune of its writer.
And Clace, Malec, Sizzy. They rock so well we may think the world is trying its best to fit them.
May we meet again very soon, buddies <3
Bueno, ¿por dónde podría comenzar?
¡Ah! Ya sé: ¡¡¡OOOOH MY FUCKING GOD!!!
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILER
Ok, no ._.
“We are all the pieces of what we remember. We hold in ourselves the hopes and fears of those who love us. As long as there is love and memory, there is no true loss.”
This was a great conclusion to the series. Cassandra Clare did a great job tying up all the loose ends and also setting the stage for the next series with Emma and Julian. I loved the introduction to all the new characters in this book. Emma seems like such an amazing character, I cannot wait to learn more about her and her friends in LA.
The only problem I have with this conclusion is just how it seemed too perfect. That isn't a bad thing really, but I think I can come to expect it from this world.
So this book was a wonderful conclusion to Clary and Jace's story and now I really need Lady Midnight. Also I really need to stop waiting so long to finish conclusions to Cassandra Clare's series.
Perfetto.
Bravo!” applaude
Ok, so there were too many new characters introduced in this one. You should not try to cram an entire new cast into the final book of a series. I feel like the book was literally split in half between two different groups, each compromised of five different characters. I understand Clare wants to introduce the Blackthorns because of her next series, but don't take half the book away from the core group (Clary, Jace, Simon, Isabel, Alec). The Blackthorn's story did add to the plot with its example of devastation wrought by the Endarkened, but that is where it should have ended. I did not connect with, or care for the Blackthorns apart from their introduction because I just didn't have enough to go on. I felt like the characters were thrown at me and it was assumed I would like them. However, I do have to say the ending the Blackthorns received in this story was absolutely cruel and I wanted to throw my book at a wall. To have weakly written characters to begin with who then are so violently treated by their own people is appalling. Maybe that was the reaction Clare was looking for, but I detest authors who do this without a clear reason behind it. This book could have used a final edit before its publication. Between the grammatical errors I found and Jace being out of character part of the time, this book felt rushed. But then again Clare's writing style improved dramatically with Alec and Magnus. I gave this book four stars because the characters still have a hold on me and the final portion of this book kept me on the edge and nearly broke my heart. The epilogue is what saved this book in my opinion.
What can I say? I REALLY would be lying if I said at this point, I was reading it 1, because I have a bit of OCD and would never be able to abandon the series with one volume to be finished, 2, because Simon is such a cutie and Magnus is adorable and you want Sebastian to burn in hell, but more than anything, 3, because you want Jace and Clary to be mushy and angsty and cute and all the romantic hoopla at all the possible occasions since you lost some sleep over them previously.
That said, I would definitely like more of the 3 to have happened. More mushiness, more angst and more cuteness, please. To go. Everybody knows we started this series because of that. Who are you kidding Miss Clare?
I felt like this book was way longer than it needed to be, but I'm so so so SO glad this is finally over. I've said before that I found the extension to the original trilogy unnecessary. As the series went on, I found myself disliking Clary and Jace more and more and no longer caring what happened to them—the side characters were really what saved it for me. Simon and Magnus and BROTHER ZACHARIAH OH MAN ALL OF THE FEELS. He definitely was what kept me reading instead of dropping the book. All the references to TID killed me. SO MANY TEARS.
Overall, it was a pretty decent conclusion and ended as you can imagine a Cassandra Clare series to end. What upsets me is I'll probably end up reading Lady Midnight when it comes out because I do like Emma, but I don't want to commit to another series like that. I really want to be done with the Shadowhunter world so I'm going to my hardest to stay the hell away from TDA. Can Cassandra Clare would just move on to something else please?
This book took me far longer to read than it should have, mainly because I didn't want it to end. The series now is complete, and I feel at a loss because the characters are so well written that they became real.
When does the next series start again?
