And Then There Were None

“The murderer is one of us!” You've heard of this one before. This mystery novel has embedded itself in our culture a way that everyone is aware of the story even if they've never heard it by name. The entire story feels like a giant trope, but it feels that way because Christie seems to have taken full advantage of the genre and pushed its strengths to their fullest potential. I was lucky enough to not have the solution to the mystery spoiled for me beforehand, but I was proud of myself for guessing the murderer on my second try. Very little makes any sense until the murderer's confession in the epilogue. The tension that the author is capable of is absolutely mind-blowing. I don't think I've been this engaged in a read in a very long time. The best thriller I've ever read.

Short, sweet, so well crafted.

Agatha Christie is truly the Queen of Mystery like the cover claims. This was my first read by her. I can definitely say there will be many more.

When I finished And Then There Were None, I had such a satisfied, childish grin on my face. I'm still baffled. Throughout the book, I thought I had it figured out about 5 different times. This story literally keeps you guessing until the very end. It was amazing.

Agatha Christie's writing is so clever and criptic. I was so entertained for the entire book. I love her style. I feel like a kid reading Nancy Drew. Why have I never read Agatha Christie before?

Dieci piccoli indiani è un romanzo giallo scritto da Agatha Christie, pubblicato in Gran Bretagna nel 1939, ed è da tutti considerato il suo capolavoro, sviluppato seguendo i canoni dell'enigma della camera chiusa doppia: i delitti si svolgono in un contesto circoscritto; l'assassino quindi deve essere per forza uno del gruppo per quanto insospettabile. Il colpo di scena principale, qui, consiste nel fatto che i personaggi muoiono tutti.

Con il suo sensazionale record di 110 milioni di copie, è il libro giallo più venduto in assoluto, e si è pertanto piazzato all'undicesimo posto nella classifica dei best-seller con più incassi della storia (terzo posto se consideriamo solo i romanzi).

La trama è la seguente: un giorno dieci persone ricevono un invito per andare in una splendida e modernissima villa, situata nell'isola di Nigger Island, in Inghilterra. Le persone non si conoscono, ma accettano l'invito escogitato da ognuno a trabocchetto. Ad accoglierli ci sono la cuoca e il maggiordomo. Nelle loro camere da letto trovano una filastrocca per bambini posta sopra al camino, che descrive la scomparsa di dieci piccoli “negretti” in modi altrettanto diversi. Il padrone di casa fa poi trovare loro un messaggio (registrato su un grammofono) nel quale ognuno degli invitati e dei membri della servitù viene accusato di aver compiuto, in passato, un assassinio, e di averlo fatto in modo tale da non essere perseguibile dalla giustizia. Da quel momento la vacanza si trasforma in un eccidio: come nella filastrocca, i personaggi vengono uccisi uno alla volta. Il luogo dove si trovano è completamente isolato, e non c'è modo di fuggire né di chiedere soccorso.

La tensione è via via crescente: ciascuno dei superstiti potrebbe essere l'assassino o la vittima successiva, e bisogna ammettere che questo romanzo è particolarmente riuscito per un insieme di fattori: da un lato perché l'autrice ha dato il meglio della sua vena narrativa proprio nei romanzi e nei racconti che aderiscono al tema “camera chiusa”, vedasi: “Assassinio sull'Orient-Express”, “Poirot sul Nilo” ma anche perché l'assenza del detective dalla romanzo fa emergere ancor meglio il rapporto fra il male e il bene, tra la falsità e la colpevolezza degli invitati e l'implacabile giustizia che toglie loro la vita uno per volta.

Romanzo che non solo fa parte del tema giallo, ma direi ne è proprio il principale rappresentante, il capostipite, il testo dal quale partire se si vuole cominciare a leggere storie di crimini, con quel sapore retrò che esalta la storia. Anche perché non essendoci il famoso Poirot o Miss Marple, può essere letto anche da chi non ama o ha dei pregiudizi sui romanzi con protagonisti detective.

Agatha Christie è la regina del giallo, senza bisogno di aggiungere altro.

Had to read the book after seeing the movie recently. Completely different ending. I like the book's better. Stumped as to why they'd change it.

A lot of people say this is Christie's best, but I have liked a few of her other mysteries better. Still, it's very good, and I couldn't come close to guessing the conclusion. Christie even made a bullet-point list of all of the hints and clues (there aren't many) and stated, basically, this is what you know, now who did it?

I think I just prefer the Hercule Poirot mysteries, but that's primarily because they are so familiar. It's like seeing my old friends each time I read one. This book is completely stand-alone with no recurring characters, and that may be why it isn't quite a 5-star for me.

I still highly recommend it.

Overall, the book is a fast-paced page-turner. A fun Sunday read with some nice plot twists. Contemporary readers may find it too “talky” and not bloody enough, but that's part of the charm here.
