It was okay.
I really liked the murder bot character, as this quirky and introvert AI, but I have the feeling that in this short format I could not care about the other main character and or the stakes of the situation. This series has potential. I just hope it doesn't turn into episodic stories where I am unable to care for the stakes at play.
The book I recommend to everyone! Even if you are not a fan of sci fi, you will enjoy this book and the series!
Had seen this recommend several times, but with a title like “murderbot” I figured it would be just another sci fi shoot em up, so I kept passing it by.
While there are parts like that, it is so much more and I am so glad I finally gave it a chance. At times MB is funny. We also get a great ride observing MB's personal journey and friendship with the humans and other artificial life forms along the way.
Read them all in short order after this first one.
Not sure it’s actively bad, but it’s surprisingly generic and boring given the popularity. I do not recall a single memorable moment or sentence... Glad I knocked it off the list, though, and happy to see some mainstreamed sci-fi!
I was afraid I would not enjoy it as my past experiences with sci-fi ended up with me pausing the reading. But I really enjoyed this one and I am motivated to keep reading the remaining books of the series.
More a three than a four to me just because the ending felt so rushed. That said, loved the narration and the tone and am excited to pick up the next one. Reminded me a lot of Kaiju Preservation society in tone and humor. Plus, can’t wait for Skarsgaard to play the titular bot.
I've been hearing about this series for while. It has been a while since I read sci-fi. This was good way to get back into the genre. The murderbot has an interesting perspective - snarky and not at all interested in the humans it works for. If you would like a quick read with a fascinating lead character- this is a great pick.
A tight 90-minute action movie in the form of a book. There's not a ton of room for character arcs or world-building, but the pace of the plot and its simple mystery makes this a fast, easy, and exciting read. I wanted it to be longer, but being so would surely take away from its effectiveness. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I was skeptical when I started the book, but by the end I was hooked. I enjoyed discovering more about the people Muderbot was protecting. I also liked learning about the world through Murderbot as well. And the end was more emotional than I expected. So this novella was more than I expected.
It felt very underwhelming, though I actually liked the MC. I just wasn't too impressed with the human characters or the plot, really.
That was... a bit unusual ))) Murderbot with a personality. Who knew? ))
3.5 solid. sci-fi is not really my genre. but the hype around this book was just too much to ignore. the tone of voice of the main character is great, the story is interesting, but not for me.
Hello friends!
This is a splendid book to start this series! Although SecUnit, or Murderbot, as it calls itself secretly, claims to hate humans and have "no feelings", that couldn't be farther from the truth. Murderbot is super shy and gives off tsundere vibes hard (platonically of course). It doesn't want to interact with humans or leave its pod (it's space with no humans & therefore no human interactions or chances to express feelings). Murderbot is really just trying to catch up on their dramas and keeps getting interrupted. The interruptions of course are packed with action, funny dialogue between the humans and Murderbot, and Murderbot being so shy as to walk into a corner of the ship to avoid attention. This book had me laughing out loud and saying "aww" more times than I can count. It was so sweet and cozy with action and mystery, and some very very bad guys. I'm picking up the second book immediately to see what Murderbot really wants.
Murderbot has hacked himself out of main control.
The idea of an android, part bot with lingering organics, gives rise to ideas of a machine that sometimes feels human, a very introverted and relatable human; with its increasing independency situations develop more unexpectedly than what I anticipated, and that kept me reading the whole book almost in one sitting.
The secondary characters add enough depth to the story and help the development of Murderbot throughout it, queer characters are also a welcomed presence.
It was a very fun and fast read 😁

I've heard this is a fun, cozy read about an antisocial robot who prefers to watch tv shows rather than interact with humans. For some reason that gave me the impression there wouldn't be much of a plot, so I was surprised how much action was in this book. I'd still consider it to be on the fun, possibly cozy side of things. Quite a fun read
people been telling me to read this book for years and I was like yeah I'll get around to it and then I got around to it and you know what, you all were right. Love this funky lil murderbot. They just want to watch their shows!!!!
Good, entertaining, funny, but somehow seems that something was lacking. Maybe next books, maybe there was not intended anything more than nice action packed thriller. Anyway good read and starting the next book in series.
Maybe what “is wrong” is that it is so short. But maybe that's for best. My melted brain read (read!!! not listened!!!) this book quite easily, this is the first read book in god knows how many years.
The concept of this is very interesting, and I enjoyed the main character very much. I also loved the other characters. I do feel as though the story went very fast, and it was hard sometimes to know what was what since they don't explain everything. I was a little disappointed in the decision made for the ending, but I am aware this is a long series, so I will see what else happens.
i don't get the hype on this one. the writing is so dull and the plot and the characters are all uninteresting to me. i listened to this via audio while reading to help me get through it, but the narrator is so monotonous that it actually ruined my reading experience. i really wanted to like this, but sadly, i will not be continuing with the series because this is just disappointing.
It's a book. It's short. It's a sci-fi story that covers a cyborg's(robot with organic material?) life after it has removed it's regulator. It's obsessed with consuming media. It learns to have pals. It's a story we are getting from murderbot's memoir-vlog. It's capitalist future wheee corporate planetary expeditions are led and there's some neo-liberal form of this that exists as “preservation”. Preservation lets units exist as free entities but requires that they be signed to a human guardian.
People commonly practice polygamy.
People feel for robot rights.
Some people are greedy.
Some people are less so.
Story is not really fun or new.
It does not explore new concepts (other than a muderbot that loves consuming media).
It's a “soft” sci-fi that has no challenging/thought provoking elements.
Unfortunately, the hype was just too big for me it seems. I think deep down I knew that it couldn't be as good as everyone was making it seem so I put off reading it. I finally picked it up to fulfill my r/fantasy bingo prompt.
The first 25% were really good. I really related to Murderbot's social anxiety. But that is it. The only part of the book that I cared for. The rest of the book in plot, characters, world-building I could not care less about. I'm really sad that it didn't work for me.
I might still try the 2nd book in the series to be sure and it wasn't just my mood, plus they are really short so it won't take much of my reading time.
