Amazing follow up to the first novel The world building is better, the lands we visited, the characters we meet, the magic and action, and the romance! l loved the humor, the banter, and just the general dynamic between the characters. Feyre is gonna destroy the shit out of Tamin and cannot wait! SJM has a knack for glorious endings. I love Rhysand and still hate Tamlin.
The way Rhysand has got me giggling and kicking my feet is honestly unacceptable. Don't know how I will survive 3 more books. Send help
All I can say is wow I now have a mist and fury hangover to deal with. I'll write a proper review once I have my brain back from the night court
This is my favorite book in the ACOTAR series. I dream about Rhys and the way he helps Feyre, it is genuinely the most beautiful thing. She doesn't want to admit she needs help, but he does it anyways. She pushes back and is a bit cruel, he takes it in stride and makes her write "Rhysand is the most handsome High Lord" over and over again until she can read.
I loved this book not only for their relationship progression, but also for the depiction of depression, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and healing. Both of them are struggling, and I thought Sarah J Maas did such a great job depicting these feelings and thoughts in the book. It is so powerful to read experiences like this in a popular book, because it helps normalize mental health issues and bring recognition to what it can look like from the outside.
Watching Feyre heal slowly and find joy again with Rhys is incredible, and I will never not love this book. It is an always must read each year, if not more than 1x in a year.
I feel for Rhys and can only imagine what he is going through on his own, but admire him and can't believe he pushes his own issues aside to help her with hers.
Thankfully we get another interaction with the beloved Suriel, and unfortunately, we get to see a desperate and horrid part of Tamlin. I do not like Tamlin, but I will say I do think he deserves a redemption arc.
The end of the book brings me to tears every damn time, and I love it so much. This book and series as a whole is a must read!
I really like this one! 4 stars because some of the writing is choppy and rushed.
Update: after reading the third book I have decided I love this one. 5 stars
SJM continues to throw me into the most beautiful world, and I especially loved seeing some of the other courts and the romance developing. My best friend and I had a whale of a time reading this and sending voice notes back and forth as we did so!!
This book met the expectations of what I was missing from ACOTAR.
The twists, the nerve wrecking moment at the end of thinking that their mating bond had been snapped actually left me in tears. The fact Feyre became the high lady of the night court at the end just sold me on it all.
5/5 easily.
Feyre has a repeated Stockholm syndrome and it took me until book 2 but now so do I. With that ending, I am locked in. Brainwashed. I will be reading the rest.
Recommend the audiobook- missed something whilst driving? Don't worry, it'll repeat itself pretty soon. Worried about too much action being hard to follow? Don't worry, it's largely exposition dumps followed by lengthy scenic descriptions and then a lil bit of sex, which goes on way longer than expected in most cases. If you like to read fast and loose, here's the series for you.
I would like to know how many times Feyre pukes in this book total. I think she vomits multiple times per chapter, and this is a long book. At least now SJM has stopped describing her watery bowels though.
Didn't love that when F&R first got it on she was covered in paint, bit reminiscent of the first book when he was abusing her. His whole character being rewritten in a big dump as well, don't super love that but I do love a tattooed bad boy with a heart of gold so count me in.
My word! What a fantastic book, Feyre is such a complex character and has really made me fall in love with her. The twists we get once Feyre accepts the help she deserves is epic! I cannot wait to see what the next book brings.
OMG!!! i loved this book so much!! feysand is just so cute!! was totally not expecting the ending
I would maybe rate this higher but idk so many characters in this made me so mad. I also kinda hated the last quarter idk I just wanted to stay in the beginning.
Better than 1st - more world building. Main character still brainless, but actual emotional trauma shown which is unfortunately rare (so many just carry on like nothing happened)
4.8/5 ☆
Okay, I've stopped sobbing and calmed down. I was a wreck when I finished this last night.
I always thought that this could never live up to the hype. I was one of the skeptics and I didn't understand why everyone absolutely lost the plot over this book in particular, but this series because the first one - in my opinion was very average.
╰┈➤ Plot
I'm not a fantasy girly, so when I was reading this, the story unfolded what seemed to be exactly like Rebecca Yarros' “Fourth Wing.” I was sitting there going, ‘Well this sounds a bit familiar.” Obviously this came first and regardless this is SO MUCH BETTER.
I was more interested in the politics and how all the dynamics between the courts would play out, how the world in jeopardy would survive (typical me I'm a plot driven reader.) This did not disappoint. I wasn't bored at any point and this book was 626 pages. Everything we encounter in the plot is relevant, builds the stories, builds the characters, adds MORE intrigue. I love it.
Yes - then obviously there is the romance. Which if you know me, I have a heart of stone at the moment. However, this broke me. I was sobbing for the last 100 pages. If you love enemies to lovers - this is done really well. There is also, a few spice scenes, which aren't my cup of tea. Not because they're bad (they're actually really good), they're just not my thing.
I also am a HUGE fan of the found family trope, so that also made my heart melt as well. The reason it's a 4.5 and not a 5 is because to me it felt very textbook fantasy story, but I'm okay with that and I enjoyed it so much nonetheless.
╰┈➤ Characters
Feyre, I really did not like in the first book and in the first half of this book. However, she grew on me exponentially after she accepted the fact she and Rhysand are mates. I didn't enjoy her whining, but she makes up with it for her undying love of her sisters (which I can relate to) and her intelligence. I love how she fits into her new found family, and loves them so much too.
Rhysand - What a guy. Obviously, I'm in love with him. Obviously. Cheeky and bold - my type of man. Yet, also has a vulnerable, twisted dark heart? Sign me up. In the first book I thought he was too cliche, but in this one and seeing him interact with other people, he's not just a big bad villain. He's the better version of Xaden Riorson type character, in my opinion.
Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Amren - I loved them all. Something about them as a group makes me cry. How much they love each other, how protective they are of each other, how they've come so far. Also, their banter is elite. I loved it. I was always entertained by them.
Tamlin and Lucien - you know what you did. I can't even begin to believe, I didn't believe it - when I read what these guys did.
With Nesta and Elain my heart breaks for them. But, I'm excited to see how they'll fit into the journey now. I also just love sister dynamics as being a person who also has 2 sisters. I love Nesta more, obviously. But Elain really surprised me in this book, she wasn't just a little lamb, she had some grit and I really appreciated that.
╰┈➤ World/Setting
This - I was enthralled. The world created was so beautiful and magical, I wanted to be in it. This makes Earth look so boring. This made the song “Luminary” by Joel Sunny play in my head on repeat. I don't know if this is a spoiler but I'll mark it as one anyway, Night Court and Velaris are the most beautiful things imaginable. Am I excited to see how the rest of the world and other courts look, yes. Yes I am. This gets a 5/5 from me.
╰┈➤ Pacing
This book is 626 pages. That's chunky. I was so intimidated to read this and was worried it would drag but I genuinely was captivated at all points in the story. I kept wanting to turn the pages, big things kept happening or cute wholesome things kept happening - but the plot was evenly spaced so I never felt bored.
╰┈➤ Enjoyment
I was crying and sobbing during the last 100 pages. I was audibly gasping at moments between Feyre and Rhysand. I loved the world, it hasn't left my mind. I will think about this forever. This is what a 5 star read feels like to me.

so i'm officially 50% of the way through - this girl is HEFTY, but i'm enjoying the politics a lot, the romance is a subplot to me. i loveeee the characters, but i am a very plot driven girly so i think thats why i'm reading this a little slower. it is really easy to read for a fantasy book though - which is a good thing for me because i can't read!

the spinny wheel has decided .... i will continue this series.... i am not ready (both good & bad)
A fantastic second book to the series. I loved so much about it, and the end had me desperate to read Wings and Ruin. I read them back to back and could barely put them down.
Hoooo boy, this is not my usual cup of soup. But I must admit, it was a good time. In terms of action, lore, and world building it delivered on all the things I was missing in the first book. Tonally, this book reminded me a little bit of the show Scandal, in that many simple problems are solved with very dramatic speeches or grand gestures. It's VERY over the top but the book owns it completely, which makes it easier to buy in as a reader. Like the first book, the protagonist is kind of the worst part but she's rescued literally and figuratively by a supporting cast of super fun characters, with tragic backstories, badass attitudes, and attire. It did feel as if this book was retconning a lot of the first book to make space for the direction that this story ultimately goes, which I was cool with but it does feel a little like this wasn't always the plan? Maybe it was but some book one characters are basically unrecognizable here. In short, it's better than the first book in pretty much every way, so if you liked that odds are you'll love this.
Overall I did enjoy this book however it took me a while to finish. Similarly to the first book in the series I really enjoyed the beginning 150 and last 150 pages of the book but I was a bit bored in the middle of the book. I think this is why it took me almost three weeks to finish the book. Even though I found myself bored the in the middle, the climatic and unexpected ending really drew me in. While I was in the middle of the book I was considering not reading the next book in the series, however after finishing it and seeing how the story ended I feel I must continue to read this series to find out what happens next. Sarah J. Maas is definitely talented at writing captivating endings and I am hoping that the next book in the series will keep me more engaged in the story throughout the whole book.
love this book and the direction it went in and i cant wait to read the third one
I thought I liked the first one enough to read the second one and oh my god. Does it get better than this, or was this the best of the series because how??
I absolutely adore this book! I'm not going to juxtapose Tamlin and Rhysand, it's apparent who the scrub is
