I haven't read a book in so long that had me turning the pages like my life depended on it. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time. Tried to put this book down so many times to do my daily tasks but it was impossible. My jaw hit the floor so many times and I audibly gasped like i was a overacting actor in a movie.
This book is CRAZY. You think you know what's happening and then it's flipped on you. And then flipped again. And again. And again. Absolutely insane.
Can't recommend this book enough. It's truly a masterpiece.

only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because the last 100 pages kind of felt out of place and different from most of the book. It felt off and I didn't like it but the ending was still AMAZING
[edit: i just found out this is the same author who wrote behind her eyes that turned into a netflix show?!? i havent seen it and didnt plan to but EVERYONE loves it so i might just watch it now!

I can't decide whether to give this two or three stars. I hated it at first, and made peace with hating it, but despite my best efforts I became more and more wrapped up in the story.
It's always easier for me to read troubled characters when they internalize, versus characters who view everyone around them with vitriol. It just seems unrealistic and exhausting to hate everyone that much. Who has the time and energy for it?
13 Minutes paints teenage girls as shallow and cruel. I get that it means to do so. I get that that's the point. But I still find it draining to read. The constant social comparisons, the callous remarks about sex and disordered eating and weight, the “not like other girls”-ing. They deliberately try to hurt one another, and delight whenever they succeed. They're all miserable and mean. I hate it.
I think Pinborough could have written antagonistic teenage girl characters without leaning into stale tropes and stereotypes. I understood that she was trying to add darkness and complexity, but she did so in such a predictable and disheartening way.
However, 13 Minutes still drew me in. I got swept up in the story and wanted to see it through. I enjoyed it more than most other thrillers I've read. I think I'm starting to get the appeal.
2.5 stars. I really need to give YA thrillers a break for a little while. The story saved itself after the half way mark. I found the change between first person and third person narration quite jarring.
It really bothers me how ineffectual and ignorant all the adults in these novels are. I know teenagers think they know everything, but really, must we encourage and perpetuate this idea? #overthehill
הספר עושה את מה שהוא בא לעשות ועושה את זה היטב - הוא מספר סיפור מהנה ומותח, עם דמויות די מעניינות וסוף שונה מהצפוי. אם כי אהבתי את הסוף הזה יותר כשהוא הופיע בספר אחר, ששם לדמות אשכרה היה בסיס מוצק לעשות את כל מה שהיא עשתה, והיא גם לא נענשה במוות רנדומלי מידי האלים בעמוד האחרון של הספר רק כדי לספק סיום נקי ויפה לכולם.
אין פה שום תובנות עמוקות או דמויות שנחקקות בזכרון, אבל כן יש כמות מטורפת של בנות ששונאות זו את זו ואת עצמן, סלאט שימיינג בלתי נפסק ולעג להכל החל מבעיות אכילה ועד למוצא חברתי. לא שזה לא נשמע אמין, זה דווקא כן, אבל כשכל הדמויות חוץ מהכלב (ביסקיט שולתתת) מתנהגות וחושבות ככה, קשה לפתח אליהן אמפתיה. בשלב מסוים אפילו קשה שיהיה אכפת מי מהן תמות ולמה. אפילו הדמות ה״טובה״ היחידה מעוררת דחף קל לנער אותה היטב.
התרגום לא היה טוב, חצי מהמשפטים ממש לא נשמעו כמו עברית, ולפעמים היו פשוט חסרי משמעות לחלוטין עד שתרגמתי אותם בראש בחזרה לאנגלית. אבל באיזשהו שלב הצלחתי להתעלם מזה ולהתמקד בעלילה. בכל מקרה מדובר בספר שבו הפרוזה פחות משמעותית. או שאולי הפרוזה היתה משמעותית, ואני פשוט לעולם לא אדע.
