What I loved:
- The grittiness
- Mirabella
- Jules
- The mythology/lore
- The last 50 pages
What I wished were different:
- The pace: it was pretty slow for most of the book
- More structured POVs
- Less confusion due to a huge cast of characters and relations
Middle grade mysteries are just so enjoyable to me. This one is set in a boarding school, which is a trope I've loved all my life, and it features a main character that gets to grow a lot, a sidekick who is frankly adorable, and it's set in the 1930s, so there's the historical aspect as well.
Also, I 100% pictured Mrs Fox as Matron from “Wild Child”.
3.5 stars.
It didn't really capture my true interest until the second half. And I just... I really don't like Mare. At all. While reading this, I wanted to read about Farley and Shade, and Maven (even though he's horrible), rather than Mare's internal dialogue of feeling sorry for herself but simultaneously being annoyed at other people for also struggling... I don't know. I'll probably continue the series since I already own King's Cage, but I hope our main character shows some development. And I'm gonna be really sad if we barely see Farley at all.
I love that one of the main characters has the same name as me.
I love that this is space archaeology – two of my favourite things.
I love Jules Addison.
I loved the fast pace of this story.
I love that there's a sequel coming.
Okay, so I've seen a lot of negative reviews of this book, and most of them complain about our main character, Ruby. But you know what, though? She has just turned FIFTEEN YEARS OLD (the goodreads synopsis is wrong, she mentions several times in the book that she's just turned 15). She's young, you can't expect her to go all MacGyver when the whole world is dying. I think she did incredibly well for her age and the author wrote her very realistically. I would probably be acting the same way at 15, worrying more about my friends than how to get water to last another day. It's just the way teenagers think. Okay, yeah, she might be a bit of a bitch sometimes and she's definitely got a high opinion on herself, but you don't have to love the main character to love the book. Her attitude does get better throughout the book, I promise.
The book did a good job at explaining why the water is deadly and it was so interesting reading about the different ways people reacted. The situation really brought out the inner core of their personality, whether that was kindness or cruelty, selflessness or violence. And this book is so sad, so so so sad.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a different dystopian and well-written.

A very satisfying end to the Hex Hall series. I'll miss reading about Sophie so much. She's a hilarious main character. I love all the other characters too - Rachel Hawkins has done a great job with all of them.
Ahhh yet another cliffhanger ending.
The White Rose was so different from The Jewel, but so brilliant. I loved it.
This was my first Colleen Hoover book, so you could say my expectations were quite high, because everyone on BookTube always raves about her books. For me, it was okay... I mean, I liked it, but it didn't stand out amongst the other books I've read this year. I never felt completely invested in the story and the characters and although the ending was exactly what I wanted, I just didn't really feel it... One day I probably will pick up one of Hoover's other books, but not for a while yet. I have a lot of other books I want to read way more.
A few of the poems in this collection really resonated with me, but most of them were either too sexual, too preachy or too bitter (?) for my liking, to be honest. Still, I can't deny Rupi Kaur has a way with words.
So relieved when I found out there will be a sequel. Because I NEED TO KNOW MORE AND THE STORY CAN'T JUST END WHERE IT DID.
The Goodreads count of number of reads is waaaay off. I've read this probably 50 times and I never tire of it. It will forever own my whole heart.
Oct 2019: Annotating a new copy and I've had so much fun doing it. It always feels wonderful returning to the world of Harry Potter, whether it's through the physical books, audiobooks or the movies. I hope I one day have children who will have my annotated copy to read through and treasure.

Enjoyable, but I didn't quite connect with the story, if I'm honest. I liked Nina a lot and her complicated relationship with Matthias. Those two were probably the ones I connected with the most. Other than that, it was interesting, but unlike most people (?) I actually prefer Shadow and Bone!

2) The Great Hunt ★★★★★
3) The Dragon Reborn ★★★★★
4) The Shadow Rising ★★★★★

There's nothing wrong with this, I just feel like this is for American millennials born in the 80s and I'm a European millennial born in the 90s, so the relatability wasn't really there for me.
The third volume is still my favourite, but this one was very intense! Now the wait for volume five begins...
I don't have the childhood nostalgia for this series like a lot of other people, but I still loved it ♡
