I finally did what I started when I was maybe 12 or 13: I finished the first Wheel of Time book! And I was much more into it now, reading it in English, than I was when I tried reading it in Norwegian one summer holiday as a kid. Cannot wait to continue with this humongous series!
I decided to buy this book after having read a couple of reviews on Goodreads. My expectations were quite high, and the book did not disappoint! While reading, I felt like the whole world – the Enclave, Wharfton, the Tvaltar – was really well described and I could easily picture it in my mind. The book is dystopian, and set some 300-400 years in the future. The climate has changed and it's incredibly hot, lakes have dried out and it almost never rains. It all seemed very realistic with all the global warming stuff that goes on today.
I liked Gaia as a main character; she's brave, intelligent and kind. She's not had the best childhood in the world, but she's always had her parents to lean on. But suddenly that changes, too. And that's where the book starts off!
The code thing was brilliant! I love when books have these little riddles and symbols that the author invites you to solve with the main character as the story progresses. I have to admit that I did not figure it out by myself!
I didn't quite feel the romance in the book, but I feel like the action and all the things happening were more important anyway, so it didn't matter much. The end was pretty heartbreaking, though. And everything with Maya – awww! Yes, I did get a little teary-eyed at times. But I won't spoil you – read the book! It's good, I promise.
Raven's story totally broke my heart while I was reading... It's so sad! But I love her determination and bravery, even when she's being treated like an animal. This novella was so good and it was great seeing everything from Raven's perspective. I especially loved the scene after the auction, before being shipped off to the House of the Stone! My only problem with this story was that it was too short! I want more of Raven!
Ahh... Well, I really wanted to love this book, but it's so hard when the main character annoys you to no end. The book started off great, with a normal (albeit mute) girl and her deaf best friend. Then boom: insta-love, mary sue & a story that doesn't feel coherent. At first the story was too slow and then suddenly it was too fast. Most of the characters were only given very little time and I feel like I couldn't connect with most of them. The book was great up until the incident at Charlotte's house but after that it went downhill.
I'm not a poetry connoisseur by any definition, but the lyrics and poems in this book were so cringe-worthy, I'm so sorry to have to say that because they probably took a lot of time to write, but they just came across as quite juvenile and silly....
First of all, I can't get over how well-written this book is! I LOVE Victoria's writing style and her way of describing scenes and landscapes makes the whole book come alive. I could see it so clearly in my mind as if I was watching a film.
The characters in this novel felt so real. I felt like I really got to know them all; both the good and the bad ones. I loved reading about the evil ones and I loved cheering for the protagonists.
I regret watching booktube videos reviewing this book though. Even though they all claimed to be spoiler-free, they still managed to inadvertently spoil me for the biggest plot element.
I will recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-written story with strong characters, set in both a dystopian & fantasy world. It's an amazing story! Read it!
I loved the premise of this book so much that for weeks I've been dreaming about buying this book, however in my dreams I always managed to lose the book before reading it, so you can imagine how excited I was to have this book in my hands and opening the front cover and finally reading it.
I really enjoyed this story. It's quite different from the fantasy books I've been reading lately and the characters were very special. I loved reading about Kell and Lila, but my favourite character ended up being Rhy. Not even sure why, I just really like him.
Learning about the four different Londons was so cool and I wish I could travel to Red London! I want to live there forever and ever!
I had to read this book in school (English), and didn't think I would like it as much as I did. It's not the kind of book I usually read, but it was charming and sad and funny. Now I really want to see the film based on the book.
4.5 stars
Wonderfully written and interesting novella exploring Tarver's past. I really enjoyed it and it was the perfect length - no beating around the bush, just fast-paced and action-packed.
I was kind of disappointed by this book, actually.
What I liked:
The last few pages were very touching, beautiful and emotional. I also felt like I could understand Cadence's relationship with her cousins, because I'm also one of three cousins born within a few months of each other. I'm not the oldest, but that doesn't matter.
What I didn't like:
The big twist wasn't at all unexpected for me. I didn't know anything about this book or the story before reading it, but I still had it figured out halfway through.
Some people might consider all the repetition poetic, but for me it was just a bit annoying.
I didn't develop feelings for the characters. None of them really stood out, I didn't love them or hate them or anything.
The whole book reminded me of Looking for Alaska, to be honest, and I didn't really love that book either.
So that's why this gets 3 stars from me. It was okay, but nothing more. And way too hyped up.
4.5 stars
It has taken me far too long to read this (seven months!!!) and it's 100% due to the hell of a winter I went through mental health-wise. The book itself is awesome and I'm thrilled to finally have entered the Cosmere universe.
I know it's a children's book, but I thought it was really nice to read a book without romance for a change. I like romance books, but sometimes it is nice with a short break.
Ugh, the French revolution. I'll be so happy when I finish the exam tomorrow. I just hope I'll pass...
Finally a book that drew me in completely, I haven't read one of those in a long time! Those books that make you forget that you are reading, “Ready Player One” was one of them.
I loved the world building and the character building in this book a lot. I really developed feelings for the protagonists and I hated the IOI Sixers. Sometimes I would groan or shout out loud as something I didn't want to happen happened. Ernest Cline truly did a great job making the book entertaining and suspenseful. When I finished the book, all I wanted to do was turn back to page 1 and start again.
Ahhhh I'm so pleased with the ending!
I'll write a proper review tomorrow, it's currently past 1am!
Review:
I'm so happy America finally came to her senses and allowed herself to love Maxon! About time! Maxon is such a sweetheart and so kind, and she's treated him like rubbish for ages, but finally she decided to show him how much she cares about him.All the deaths killed me though... First, her father? No, not okay. Then Celeste, and Queen Amberly. The King also died, but good riddance, says I! The sentence where Celeste was killed completely took me by surprise. I had to read it fifteen times before I was able to continue reading. And I can't believe Aspen actually married Lucy (well, they were going to get married anyway)! I think I mentioned them getting married in my review of The Elite, am I a psychic yet? Haha!
I loved the short chapters and the action-packed story! The multiple (12) POV's were a bit confusing at first, but easier once you get to know the characters and their bloodlines.
I'm kind of obsessed with Endgame right now and working hard to solve all the puzzles (which is very hard and I haven't made much progress yet). My bloodline is Harrapan, but based on location I would think my line would be La Tène.
