The second half of the book was definitely the best. At first I was a little bored to be honest. There were so many descriptions and not much happened. But then, piece by piece, the story revealed itself and every now and then a new revelation would make me go “Oh... OH!”. And that's when I know it's a good book. I can't wait to see what the author does next!
Forever regretting not going with astrophysics in university. Oh well, at least I still went the STEM route, which allows me a good understanding of the science of space, and at least I can revel in the wonders of the universe through books and documentaries. Ah, I love space.
I'm so not ready to say goodbye to Grace, Greer and Gretchen. I want more triplet power. I need more argh.
This book (and it's predecessor) are weird as hell, but so entertaining and easy to read. The world in these books is quite terrifying - teen pregnancy has become an industry and is seen as morally right by the majority of people. That is not okay. Melody & Harmony are easy to tell apart while reading, since they are so fundamentally different. The writing isn't spectacular, but the humour and the weird pregnancy-related slang is right up my alley.
The ending satisfied me.
I enjoyed the first book in this series more, but that was mostly because I'm more fascinated with the time period of [b:Into the Dim 25897792 Into the Dim (Into the Dim, #1) Janet B. Taylor https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1445519198s/25897792.jpg 42755574] (12th century Europe) rather than the time period in this book (1895 NYC). Still though, it was good and I liked it! I'm not sure if there's a third book coming, but I certainly hope so!
I wasn't okay after reading Ember the first time, I was even less okay after reading Torch the first time and now I've read A Reaper at the Gates and I'm DEFINITELY NOT OKAY. Everything hurts.
Dammit, Cat was my favourite character :( Out of all the 7 mains, why why why did it have to be her who died.
Is it well-written? No. Does it have good world-building? No. Is it entertaining? Hell yeah.
4.5 stars.
This book was deep, and I feel like some of the biggest critics of this book didn't truly understand the true message of it. I understand how they would then find it boring.
For me, personally, I found it very thought-provoking, emotional and the pace to be perfect for the story being told.
Going into this book, I was wondering if it would be a book to my taste, with regards to violence and death. But I soon discovered that it was less about the actual act of killing and more about the thought process of the Scythe behind the gleaning, a narrative on how power corrupts and how - unbeknownst to most of us - we live the way we live because death is inevitable. I really enjoyed the book a lot.
I can't believe the series is done now. I promised Amy I wouldn't post any spoilers, so I'm not saying anything about the story, but.... WOW. Just wait until you read this!
