I was so excited about this book. Great synopsis. Had potential. Fell absolutely FLAT halfway through. It was a slow burn, but way too slow. I kept wondering when something was going to happen that the book promised. And Egads!! Once we get there, the ending is short and not really worth all that time committed. I hate to be so harsh on a book that was otherwise well written, but books about “cults and religious nature” happen to be one of my favorite sub genres, so I feel I have to be brutally honest. This one just did not do it for me.
I truly believe Karma wrote this book itself. What a brilliant take on “what comes around, goes around. “ Third book I read by this author just this week ,and once again I am floored. He sure knows how to make you have “the feels” for characters and to get all wound up in their crummy little lives. I haven't been this taken with an authors work in quite some time. I truly hope this young man gets the notoriety he deserves. I know I shall sing my praises to all the social media gods to try to help. Plus, people who enjoy reading DESERVE this treat. This is the author to read for the ending of 2020.
I loved this book. A very creative, unique idea. The story line was a bit predictable but that didn't take away from the enjoyment of it for me. A coming of age story that deals with a difficult subject. That subject is not written about in a blunt, all out there dramatic way either. It's more subtle but you still know what's going on. Just a poetic masterpiece of creativity with one of the most unique thought sequences I have ever come across.
This book blew me away. Chaney is one of the best writers I have came across as of late. Why does this man not write more?! I loved all the little throw backs he left through out the book. This is one collection that when I got to the last story, I wanted so much more.
I will have nightmares about Tara, as I looked up the YouTube video after I read the story.
Oh how I adore this book. As far as what genre it is, it could be a sweet variety. Horror, thriller, magical realism, myth....it flows though them all. The main character I could relate to perfectly, as I myself went through a similar situation. The feelings she goes through are exactly the feelings I felt. The author hit those feelings beautifully and wrote with such passion! I had never read her work before but wow....now I will look for anything she writes. This book is brilliant and such an emotional roller coaster.
Bravo! Another great book by a new favorite author of mine. I have read all of Abe's books to date and have enjoyed them all! I rave about him all the time. I don't understand how his name isn't everywhere in the horror book community. He deserves to be up there with the greats after this many good books. I hope he continues to write for a very long time.
Oh wow! What a wonderful, weird absorbing book. Now I don't usually like books that have anything to do with negative treatment of animals or hunting, I had to see where this went. (It's not abuse, just some major hunting scenes) This book was one of those where you felt the dread bleeding through the pages but had to finish because it drew your curiosity to the limit. It's a depressing, bleak book but beautifully written. I personally love books like that. The ending to me was unexpected, and I think different people will get different things from it. My take was that, in a community so hell bent on “shooting” or killing anything that is different,( or for sport, etc.) Chaos was bound to reign. That and the constant interference with nature was sure to backfire. The logging, the building of condos, clear-cutting, deforestation, pollution, the labs, experiments, etc. The “creatures” to me anyway, were a bit of karma.
Another wonderful book by David Joy. This man writes pain and suffering beautifully, and that's a hard thing to pull off. There were so many thought provoking periods in this book, that several times I had to put the book down and just analyse the moment. Joy writes characters that stay with you long after you hear their tale and go through the lives they lead. They are characters that are so real ,they could even be you, or someone you know and love. His books always hit home in some way. It lets you know he truly knows what he's writing about . He just keeps getting better. I hope this gentleman never stops having ideas, thoughts, dreams etc. that he turns into brilliance on paper.
Once again Tiffany McDaniel has given me hope again in reading. She puts the excitement and edge back into it. The joy of having a book in your hands that you will put everything else aside for, including the cat. She writes with a passion that you feel in your teeth as your clenching them over the drama that unfolds. She writes with a fire you can feel in the pit of your stomach as you go through what the character go through. Characters that will stay with you your whole life. Characters that make a book a classic. Such a talented author. She is a true gift to the literary world.
