This book was harsh. Rough. Trigger warning people, just stay away from it. There's a lot. Especially for people who don't like animal mistreatment. I usually throw a book down as soon as I come up on anything like that ...but this book was just too good. It is written through the eyes of a 6 year old. what he sees, hears, smells, and experiences during WWI. The way the people has to live was appalling, but the survival methods was astonishing. The resilience of the mistreated. These were some strong willed , hard people. They had to be.
This was an amazing read. I was extremely astonished.
Bad Things Happened in This Room is the epitome of the unreliable narrator. It's disfragmented, but needs to be to get the story out in a way that you feel you are experiencing just what the protagonist is. I felt so much reading this book as a survivor of domestic /emotional abuse. You just honestly won't know where the story is going and I very much enjoyed that aspect.
This book was a true horror book, to me. Monsters don't scare me, humans and what can happen to their own minds? Very scary.
Highly recommend.
I finally just finished this novel. I took my sweet time with it, because I loved it.These characters and all their stories and travels? I could not get enough. Now , I'm gonna have the absolute worst book hangover until the author writes the next one. It has made me so happy to find out this is going to be a series.
I have 2 favorite books no one has ever been able to match. The Forest of Hours by Kerstin Ekman and The Man Who Spoke Snakish by Andrus Kivirähk. This book is now my 3rd. There's a lot of similarities and the writing reminded me of the same talent, but talent that is very much distinct in each author.
I am so glad you're back! E
Jack Spinks is a good man, yet has a very dark side as well. It's a dark side that's merited for the life he's had to live. Who's to say when violence is justified and when it's not?
Jack meets a strange girl on the hollow that somehow reminds him of his passed away daughter. It's takes awhile, and it isn't at all linear, to get to the story of what happened to Jack's wife and daughter. It's a very sad story indeed. The girl is mixed up in some bad people. Are they demons or are they just very demonic men? Is there a difference? Iris, the young girl, has a story herself, and it's a very sad one too.
This is a depressing tale, not going to sugar coat it, but it's just flows so beautifully. This is a very different book than the author's first novel. He's come a long way in his writing.
This story was mixed around and coming at you from different angles, but if you stick with it, it comes together at the end.
I love unreliable narrator tales. And this definitely that. You never know who's good , or evil , shadow , or ghost. If I had to call this novel a certain genre, it would probably be southern noir magical realism. Which is my absolute favorite. 4 stars , highly recommended.
Private Cyril Bagger has navigated the unimaginable terrors of World War I using cunning and trickery, often taking advantage of his fellow soldiers. However, his instincts for survival face their toughest challenge when he and four other soldiers embark on a dangerous mission into the treacherous No Man's Land to end the suffering of an injured comrade.
Yet, what they discover in the devastated landscape is not a man in need of salvation, but a celestial being, seemingly felled by gunfire. This angelic figure might possess the solution to halt the relentless war, but only if the soldiers can set aside their personal ambitions and unite. As envy, greed, and suspicion fester, their unity crumbles under the weight of their internal struggles, threatening to transform their encounter with the divine into a plunge into chaos.
I had to get past the way the book is written- with few periods, and lots of commas....but it all falls into place. Daniel Kraus has become one of my all time favorite authors. No one can write the horror, fear, and angst that our minds can create, better.
I was really hoping for more with this one, when compared to Twin Peaks. It was definitely an interesting mystery. It did not have that surreal feel, and basically just had the one real mystery going on. I mean odd things were happening, but it all lead to the one story.
I expected more eccentricity also. The basically only weird characters were Tree Top, and that the whole town blamed every single thing on him, but whoever was “him” was allowed to get away with it all those years was kinda ridiculous.
I did learn that Salt Lake was a real place. That's pretty cool.
I am rating 3 because I feel like I may have set my expectations way too high with this one. It was not a bad book at all, just not what I was hoping for. I wanted magical realism and more surrealism.
A must have for everyone!

This is a sad story. A hopeful story, A funny story. An adventure story. Road trip, anyone?
How about with PJ...
who's in his sixties, is best friends with his ex and her husband Fred, has an estranged daughter named Sophie, a cat the either brings death or senses it, and 2 new grandkids he didn't know he had.
He gets the kids through a murder/ suicide type of situation, from a niece he didn't know he had.
He's decided to take his mixed up family on a road trip to Arizona,to meet up with a newly widowed ex girlfriend, while his ex+ wife is on a trip of her own, to Alaska. Fred ,the neighbor and PJS best friend is going to propose to Ivy , PJs ex wife. Sound like a confusing mix of people?
The kids, Luna and Ollie, have been through so much. All the characters have been through so much. Sophie is grieving her sister's death, which was PJ's daughter.
This is a story about how broken people can be put back together again, with help from one another. That it's never too late to be happy and find genuine, caring souls. I loved this book so much. Annie Harnett knows how to write a story that uplifts the soul, and gives hope to the broken.
This book has to be read and talked about more...
It's dark and dad, but heartfelt and hopeful. What lengths people go to for ones they love, what are minds can turn into when faced with loss after loss. I absolutely loved Liv and felt for her so much. A lot of the book is told by her, in her words. It also goes into the other characters minds and story is told from multiple points of view. It's definitely a disturbing one, and I guarantee you won't run across anything like it.
This was a really good story. I wish the ending had been longer. It didn't explain thoroughly why what happened to the girls happened, I think it wanted you to come to your own conclusions on that and grief. It ended rather abruptly, which was the only thing I didn't like.
Stories like this, you see how rumors spread and how groups of people together can willingly band together against others and bully or harass them, without proof other than heresay. Humans have always been like that. Many innocent have suffered due to one person who dislikes them, starting rumors that they get many to believe.
Like I said, a good story but it needed to be longer. I'd still recommend.
This book was strange. While I love weird books, this one left a lot unanswered for me. Sometimes that's okay in a story as well, but with this one, I just wanted more. Reminded me of a mix of Lapvona and The Library of Mt. Char.
Very grotesque and a lot of cannibalism. A lot of weirdness. And some bees thrown in for good measure.
You know how you feel when you find that one special book that just checks all the boxes of all the things you love in a story? Well, I feel beyond that way.
This was an epic adventure story full of characters I fell in love with. Barnaby himself , was one of a kind. I loved everything about his character. The storyline was unique and intriguing. The author is amazing. I've read his other books and they were great as well, but this will go down as my favorite just because I love adventure tales and creatures and swords and all that.
I don't know how more people do not know this book. It seriously is better than most things being written today.
Do yourself a favor, a fall into this story of quests, eccentric characters, and a talking cat that has sass.
This book was eagerly awaited and I was so excited to receive an ARC. The novel was amazing. I couldn't stop reading. Very beautiful descriptions of the natural surroundings, just like Ivey's past novels. It was extremely sad in parts, but not every beautiful novel has to have a happy ending. Highly recommend.
