5 stars, that are rare for me to give
First off, that cover is bada**! Love the art and it honestly drew me to this book, and I am ever so thankful for that. I very rarely give a book 5 stars. Especially a short story collected or anthology, because the stories are usually all so different. You will like some, and not the others. But this one, I loved every single story. This is the first time I have read this author. I believe this is actually a debut collection for him. Let me say this, and mark my words, this author will go far. He writes stories that creep and crawl into your soul. Nightmares come off the pages and into your dreams. Dread around every corner. I am going to recommend this to every horror lover I know.
While this is a tragic story the writing could have been so much better. Things were all over the place. The author didn't go into detail about anything. Too much was left out. While the things they suffered were awful, I expected more detail about why and how they effected them. This story had so much potential, but sadly fell flat.
This is the best horror book I have read in quite some time. I have read all Keisling's books to date, but this one is in my opinion, his magnum opus. So creepy, so well written, so interesting. I will highly recommend this to every horror lover I know. Also, this takes place in Kentucky ( which is my home) so it has that southern noir aesthetic. Dark, creepy, wonderful. Read today!
Finished this wonderful book tonight. Wow! What a ride! This is unlike any book I've read relating to the creature in it.
There's so much more I want to know and I really hope there's another book coming along. This had some nods towards The Bones of The Earth, as well. While I felt for Peter, I ended up hating Mary. I was so hoping she'd get her due towards the end. But then again, they are creatures of their upbringing, both of them....so you do feel some empathy.
Such a great story written with action, emotion, and wonderful words. Keep up the great work Scott. You are one author who I don't even have to read a books synopsis before I will dive into it.✌️
Why are these books not more popular? They are absolutely more brilliant than half the more talked about books I see every where. Great world building, brilliant characters, a storyline literally, right out of hell. It was amazing. Well, I'm gonna share these books in every horror /dark fantasy group I'm in, and share in my Facebook and Instagram. Hopefully get this author the recognition they deserve.
Holy shit. I spent 3 whole days devoted to this book. I almost put it back down countless times. People comparing it to The Stand or Swan Song are so way off base.
Nothing happens. People walk. A virus spreads. You have a wee bit of chaos thrown in there, but not really any story line that goes with it. One crazy redneck dude and a wayward Preacher. The ending left me so mad I had to go for a walk. The whole AI turned rogue god thing was just ridiculous to me. But, to each his own. I just didn't like this book and I wasted so much time on it.
The only thing I liked about this book was the Rock God, Pete. He should have his own book, about his life. That was at least interesting.
Such a heartbreaking, beautiful story. I have heard of the Blues my whole life, being born and raised in Kentucky. It's horrible what these people had to go through and horrible the way humans treat anything with “peculiarity”.
Loved how the story came together. Very much enjoyed how these people used books to escape.( I do that)
