Dan Chaon has become a favorite author of mine, through the years. I would read his grocery list. The man can write. He is extremely talented and it just gets better with each book.
I love his short stories. His novels I wish went on forever. That's how invested you get with the characters. He writes people that you don't want to stop engaging with.- People that you don't want to stop knowing when the books ends. I like that he threw a little magical realism in there. A little weirdness. That makes his stories special. I absolutely love the main character in this one.
Oh how I loved this book. The author even gives you a few great book lists at the end. Great characters, story development, and I absolutely loved Tookie. I would love to have more books written about her. A lot of people don't want to be reminded of Covid, or to continue to think about it, but sadly it's here and at least this wonderful book came out of it. Rest in Peace to all those who were lost, and those we continue to lose in the future due to Covid 19
This book was absolutely amazing. A new favorite, for sure. Magical Realism, fantasy, supernatural, horror of the worst kind ( human made) Combines Neil Gaiman, Nalo Hopkinson, Ben Okri, and the author's own unique style. I cannot praise this enough. I so hope this author gets read by people and the praise that they deserve. Also I hope to read so much more by this author.
Just a wonderful story. A great book for someone who wants to start reading, is in a reading slump, or just any book lover. Explores the reasons we read, how it can help us so much to have an “escape” and/or heroes, when our own lives may be in chaos or we are lonely and depressed.
I know personally, books have saved me my entire life. So many authors I owe my own life to.
This is a beautiful book.
Wow..what a powerful book. There is a shit ton of trigger warnings so beware. ( Rape, abuse, violence, pedophilia) Needless to say, it was a wonderful story. Lilac( Clare) is a brave, powerful girl who struggles with her messed up life while also dealing with epilepsy, autism, her parents, etc. She came out such a strong character. This book will be on my mind for days.
This is my favorite book. Through the years I have told many people to read this book, and it would be their favorite as well.
Some listened, and joined the club of the enlightened.
Some are still missing out on the greatest novel ever written. Why do this to yourself? Read this brilliant piece of literature today
I loved this book. It won't be for everyone. If you love dark/black comedy and can relate to the way super depressed people think, this book is for you. It talks a lot about death. The main character is obsessed with it. I, myself, related so much to this character it was scary. If you enjoy Ottessa Moshfegh, Claire Fuller, or Karen Russell....you will love this. Reminded me a lot of My Year of Rest & Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh.
Another great book by Chris. I love reading his books because they are so familiar and cozy. Can a suspense/murder mystery be cozy? Yes, if it describes the hills, the scenery, the people of the town so perfectly, that you are literally right there with them. I am from eastern Kentucky, have lived here all my life. My son lives in Morehead ( the town in this story) and went to college there. When you know that an author either HAD to have lived in an area as well, or really did his research, it makes you appreciate the story that much more.
I hope that this may just be an beginning for the main character, Mick. I'd love to read more books following him and his sister. His character reminds me a lot of myself. I found his whole childhood backstory and how he turned out, very relatable. Please Chris??? Write more with these two!!
I will read anything Offutt writes. He's talented and I am NEVER bored. Read this book in exactly 3 1/2 hours.
Excellent work again Mr. Offutt! Hope you come to Morehead for a book signing soon! I will be there with bells on!
This book ended up being a new favorite. I was first attracted to it because of the beautiful cover. My two favorite animals are cats and owls. So I was just drawn to this immediately. It's extremely strange and I don't really know if you can call it any one genre. Is it fantasy, magical realism, surrealism? That's what is wonderful about it. The author let's you decide what you want it to be. A really brilliant example of unreliable narrator. This story will definitely be one that stays with me forever. I'm buying a hard back copy as soon as they are available. This book won't be for everyone, but if you like strange, and unexplained....this is for you.
Also, the music being added is a brilliant plus. I looked up every song as mentioned and listened to it. Added to the story that much more.
Please, please Claire, never stop writing. I need more of your mind.
I was hoping to love this book since southern gothic is my favorite, but alas, I only liked it a bit. I like when books labeled as “southern” know the dialect and the way people from the south actually behave. It shows you have done research or at least read other southern fiction. This book didn't go that route. Plus, the story line itself was just not that “spooky” to me. Decent book, but not great, at least for me.
Wow! Where do I even begin with this book? This is absolutely my new favorite book of 2021 so far, and I doubt that changing. Excellent use of the unreliable narrator. This author is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. This was the first book I had read by her, but definitely will be on her radar from now on. This is how a thriller/suspense/horror should be written. Still amazed days later.
