This was a disjointed, chaotic mess. I don't think I've ever read a book that was trying to go so many different directions. Also, the main character, Anna, was so annoying that it was hard to understand or believe anything behind her reasoning for doing things she did. I would have gave up after the weird fountains were introduced but wanted to see if anything went anywhere. I thought this was going to end up being a book that dove into the reason behind strange “rains” , but we are just left with weird beings throwing stuff at us. Okayyyyy.
One of the best magical realism novels ever. I don't know how this book is not more well known. Magical, horrific at times, hilarious, with a unique storyline. One thing I did prefer about this story to MOST Latin American magical realism stories, is it wasn't as political. Highly, highly recommend.
This is a favorite book of mine. The writing is absolutely brilliant. It's thought provoking, funny, sad, emotional, exciting, and enlightening. Just about every feeling that you can have while reading a book you will get, it is about an entire LIFE of Skord. It's an unusual premises, being the main character is a troll like , nature creature who is mistaken for a child at the beginning.
His travels, his meeting of eccentric characters, his thoughts. It's just a beautiful book. I haven't came across anything like it.
It will take you time to get through this one..it's not a fast read even if you're at it all day. Sometimes I would stop, close the book and my eyes, and just think a bit about what I just read.
It was an experience for me.
This author is amazing and I could find more fantasy type/ magical realism books by her.
Loved this book. Hummingbats, floods of flowers, and rain that travels upward.
A young lady brought up in a very restrictive life searching for freedom, love, family, and peace. Magical. Adventure. Some harsh parts but this story was absolutely beautiful. The authors prose was beautiful and brilliant. Why didn't he write more books????
First off...I do NOT understand the low rating, unless people were expecting something full of romance and light heartedness. The cover maybe gave the wrong impression?
I was born and lived in Van Lear, KY until I was in my 30s. Now I'm older and still in the same county, just a different town. It was so interesting to read stories based on the area I grew up in. Some of the stories, I had heard versions of even.
This novel starts out with the coal miners, and how they were treated. Then we go to: The klan , detectives, murders, rapes, racism, bigotry, thefts....just so much to this whole story. So many characters to follow as well. After a bit, you can keep up better, but at first it's a bit overwhelming.
I am really glad I finally came across this story and for the life of me, don't know why it's not more well known. There isn't much on the author and he doesn't have many books, which is a shame.
Don't let the rating fool you. If you like gritty, southern ,Gothic stories about families and real life
...this is for you.
Comparisons: The Devil All The Time, To Kill a Mockingbird, David Joy, Ron Rash, Taylor Brown, William Gay, and Faulkner.
This was such a great novel. I can't wait to read the second one, which is the “ to be continued” part of this story. I loved how the characters were written, even those we are supposed to hate. This type of story always interests me, and when it's written well, like this one is, it's hard to forget. I will look to the authors other books as well now.
