I had put this book off for so long, as it's not my usual style. Family dramas.
I started it, and although it had a slow start....oh wow, was the wait absolutely worth it. This man can write beautifully. The characters he creates are REAL. The place feels familiar, even if you are from a whole different place in the world. I absolutely loved it and now will read his other books immediately. The twists were shocking and soooo good. I just can't praise this book enough.
Wow...this was an absolutely beautiful, brilliant novel, and it also broke me. This is not a modern day Metamorphosis. This is a book about mental illness, isolation, feeling like you don't belong in this world, families that don't connect, and so much more.
I love unreliable narrators and it took me awhile to understand what genre I was reading , sci-fi, horror, surrealism? Of course, in David's mind, it's all very much real.
Also the added artwork was absolutely phenomenal. I really loved the last piece and saved it on my ereader.
I guess I should mark this with spoilers but you do find out pretty early on this is a mental thing.
Everything about this book was perfection. The protagonist. The storyline. Her survival. What she goes through. Her thoughts. The written prose. This is a book to read when you want to take in a great story, but also beautiful, lyrical words. This book is magic.
I can't wait to buy a hardback copy for my collection.
Such a great follow-up to Ghost on Black Mountain. Can't wait to read books 3 and 4. Ann Hite has become a favorite author of mine. She writes characters, especially women characters, with such feeling and depth. You can feel all that they go through, as if it's happening to you.... I absolutely love the supernatural, magical realism aspects added in. The descriptions of the southern land and atmosphere. Her books are just the absolute perfect stories, to me. Going on to read Where The Souls Go next.
I loved this book so much. Such an interesting tale with wonderful characters. I truly hope with the way it ended, that there may be a follow up tale.
This is a new author for me and I was extremely impressed with her prose, pacing, and obvious research. Such a talent.
This book is great for anyone who's into historical fiction with a touch of magical realism, and notes of supernatural and possible witchcraft.
Wow!
This book. First of all, it's southern noir. It's not a happy, hopeful book. It's truth, at its harshest. The hard, brutal truth of life in a small town where a young lady and a young boy crash into one another, and become close, have hopes, and then sadly, life.... Happens. You have your drug cartel, and abusive parent. You have an elderly, wise neighbor who cares. You have a young boy who just wants to be loved and get “away” and a young lady who has made one bad mistake too many.
The story itself was great. What I loved about this book the most, was the prose. The bits where characters thoughts were related to us, like a diary. Beautiful words. This author is on my radar forever more after this book. I just went and bought the ebooks of his other two novels.
If you enjoy southern noir, David Joy, Ron Rash, Larry Brown, Daniel Woodrell, Donald Ray Pollock, William Gay, Chris Offutt, etc. You will love this book.
A great book by Jesmyn. Loved the magical Realism. There have been soooo many books about racism out this year, I'm burned out on that trope, However. It's like this year, every favorite author of mine, decided to tackle this subject. So maybe I should have paced then apart.
I did love her Salvage The Bones book the best. It's my favorite by her.
After all this time, some read a couple times, it is finally over. I am saddened. But... What will I do with my life now? Go back, to the very beginning. Probably start with Carrie, and read all King's hooks, find all the Easter eggs and connections. Once you fall into the King universe(s) nothing else really seems to compare. I try to read other books, but they just end up boring me.
So, this book was a very sincere, well plotted ending to a very long, drawn out trip. The characters I loved. Will always remember.
There simply is not anything like The Dark Towers, just like with television series, there simply is not anything like Twin Peaks. They are one of kind creations that just stand apart from the rest.
So Go now, there are other worlds than these No... There really isn't.
I loved this book so much. It wasn't a pretty story at times, but the magic in it was absolutely real. This is exactly how magical realism is done when it's done right.
A story about mothers and daughters. The struggles sometimes in love between them. How sometimes the damage is just a never ending circle. It's also about found family.
The ending was a little rough and blunt. But, it went well with THIS story. It was an ending that made sense for THIS story.
Love. Love. Love. Now I will have problems finding anything that comes close to comparing for awhile.
David Joy is one author that I don't even have to read the synopsis of the book, to read it. I have followed him for years, and will continue to do so, cause the man can write. He writes characters that are real and fleshed out. Situations that aren't pretty, but you feel em along with the folks in the storyline. He is such a huge talent. And keeps getting better.
I love magical realism. It's my favorite escapism go to. It's very hard to find books that fall into this category that aren't Latin American, political, or just plain hard to read. I think part of it, is it not being as popular in America. Another issue, is it's pretty hard to write, and write good.
This author has answered my magical prayers with his writing.
A great chilling story about small town secrets, finding new people you can count on, how sometimes you can feel “coming home” right in the viscera. A town where they had previously flooded the whole town before, and created a dam. But what all was involved is shocking.
Magical Realism in this story was perfect. Just the right amount, and at the right moments to make this a spooky tale. I love books about towns with secrets. This one was a small, lake side town. So had the boats, lake, and water....
I enjoyed Cassie the most. She was my favorite character, as this mainly follows Cassie, Lark, and June. I related to Cassie the most.
This was a great novel and I very much look forward to more by this author.
Such a heartbreaking, beautiful tale. Told from the prospective of each of the characters, that lives intertwine. Told in a way that you see each person's personal struggles and inner demons. A novel that makes you stop and realize you truly don't know what another person has going on in their mind, or what they have been through in their lives, that make them who they are or do the things they do.
Bits of wonderful magical realism thrown in to make it a brilliant lovely saga.
