I have to really love a book to give it 5 stars.. and this was an easy 5 star for me! This historical fiction takes place in Toronto before and during WW2. I absolutely loved it. It's amazing to read about history in a place that you know so much about.
After reading so many WW2 books, this one felt under researched. The characters were unlikeable and it seemed like a very “elementary” read. Good if you're just getting into the genre tho!
What an incredible read. This sweet old man has changed my life. His experiences and life story are truly amazing.
Not great... but good. Enjoyed the political aspect of it and the strong female leads.
Wow! What an incredible historical fiction book! I'm amazed. So much history & what an amazing story to go along with it. A must read for history fans!!!!
Very underwhelmed with this read. It's hard to sympathize with something you don't really agree with (home births). It's a great feminist read though. Just hard to enjoy the book when you side with the antagonist
This book was very good, just felt very very long. It's only about 400 pages and it felt like 1000
DNF at 117/586 pages. Before bailing on this book, I read some of the reviews to make sure I wasn't the only one feeling the way i felt about this book- and I was correct in my stance!
This book reads like a history book. I usually devour WW2 novels & love to learn as I read an interesting and admirable story, but this one was wayyyyy too much. I read for a reason, to enjoy & relax, and I felt like I had to really focus on the story to understand what the author was saying, which isn't a bad thing, but I felt myself not actually reading , but just moving my eyes along the page lol.
Boring, uninspiring, and dull novel. I'm hoping my next book of Jennifer's that I pick up is better!
Hazel Gaynor is a treasure! This book was incredible. I enjoy all of Gaynors novels but this one was magnificent. And it's a true story! Incredible writing.
Absolutely loved this book. Clara wasn't a likeable main character by any means, but her story was fascinating... especially because we live in the same place.
This is for sure a Canadian classic!
I absolutely love Pam Jenoff. I think her stories are incredibly thorough and deep, but this one fell a little flat for me. The main character Addie was frustrating to say the least. She had 0 confidence and was always acting impulsively. When she ran along the beach and set off a land mine? How selfish is that?
What does Frieda put in these books?!? I can never put any of her books down. Amazing!
Loved this book! A little too much romance for me, but that's just a personal preference :)
After reading the Paris Assignment & loving it Rhys Bowen became a must read author for me. I'm so glad a pre-ordered her newest book The Rose Arbor. I'm usually not a mystery fan but found myself loving this book!
Can't wait for her next one!
Didnt love this. Some Elin books really pull you in (Hotel Nantucket) but this one fell flat for me. I felt very “who cares?” not even half way through it. DNF at half.
This book had SO many layers, and I actually kind of loved it. Despite the many spelling errors, I found it to be a very intriguing story for many reasons, which I find kind of strange because the book is very bush-league. Being a historical fiction fan, I know lots about WW2, and a lot of the facts in this story are either inaccurate or unbelievable.
This book is amazing. Very telling of what's happening in Afghanistan right now. Hosseini is an amazing author with wonderful insights.
