Really enjoyed flipping through this book! I love that it's not too heavy for a history book. The author kept it short and sweet for every topic/chapter.
I was given access to this ARC via Edelweiss & am very grateful! I had larger hopes for this one. Loved the concept, as I always enjoy books that are set in history in Ontario. But, this one fell flat. There were too many details that shouldn't be in the book, and that made me angry. I often skipped pages to the next chapter just to finish talking about that one thing, and found that the story hadn't changed much even though I skipped pages.
This is such a great concept for a book, I just wish there were more interesting themes throughout! Also, being from Ontario, I didn't find that there was a lot of imagery of the place, and that would have been nice to include!
DNF about 50%. I can appreciate a great story but just wasn't my type of read! Incredible man though.
I really enjoy Hazel Gaynors books regardless of my 2 star review... this one I struggled with. Wasn't full of a lot of action & was pretty predictable. But, always love a good true story historical fiction!!!
DNF at 30%. While I appreciate the story & its benefits (educating people), I found it very hard to like. It's told in the perspective of someone looking back on life recalling the events & I didn't vibe with it.
This book is the kind of book that makes you love books!
I'm so happy I decided to read this. Historical fiction can be daunting if you're not in the “mood.” This book made me remember why historical fiction is my top genre! Madeline Martin, thank you for such an incredible read!!
Meh. Wasn't my favourite. Felt like a very long story when I knew what the ending was gonna be half way through!
I wanted to love this book so badly but I found it SO hard to follow. It follows 3 different women at different time periods throughout WW2. Very very hard to follow. I found myself checking back to the synopsis to remember who each character was
Like many of the reviews I'm reading on this book, I DNF at about 75% lol. It got so dry and predictable that I felt like I knew everything that was going to happen so I didn't feel the need to finish. It had such potential!! The setting was perfect, characters very unlikeable
The story line was very promising, but about 30% through I was so bored. It was a whole lot of nothing. DNF
Loved this book!!!
Found it very compelling. Not much suspense but enough to keep me entertained!!
I love that this book had me engaged and interested throughout the whole story! Not once was I bored of the storyline so I love that. It left a weird taste though that I can't explain lol
DNF at 45%. The idea is there, but the story was extremely boring lmao. I want to like one of her books but I just don't get the hype!!! Love the Canadian context and setting though!
This book has the right plot line, but I was left with SOOO many questions that it bugs me way too much. I felt like the story wasn't finished properly?
Great book, but felt like the story went on longer than it should have!! Felt my interest dying at the end. Did not finish the book.
This book surprised me. Started as a suburban fiction book and ended kinda thriller/horror???
SOO good.
