A fantastic journey through the blizzard, in a tough winter coming from the Russian literature. A doctor called for his duty meets weird characters and magical to some extent, witnesses unusual things while travels for more days to treat a pacient.

I confess, I was captivated by the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit - the movies. Then I wanted to read the books and I just received The Hobbit this Christmas. It's because of my poor imagination or maybe my age (36), but I did not find the book as fabulous as the movies were. The story and descriptions did not apeal my emotions and fibers as did the movie. Maybe it was a mistake to see the movie first.

Nevertheless it's a good plot, it starts quite intriguing with all those foreign dwarves and Gandalf entering Bilbo's house. The story brings fantastic creatures, mithical characters, epic battles between good people and bad creatures. It talks about courage, friendship, loyalty, heroism, but also about greed.

Althout Tolkien wrote this book for his children, I think he had in mind other stories, this is why some characters or battles are only mentioned but not described. Good for us, among other writings, he wrote the sequel Lord of the Rings.

Despre “Ultima licornă” a lui Peter Beagle am auzit prima dată acum 20 de ani, într-o tabără de arheologie. Mi-au plăcut atât de mult titlul cărții și pasiunea cu care povestea prietenul meu, încât după 20 de ani recunosc titlul în librărie, o cumpăr și încep să o lecturez.

Licorna este inorogul, animalul mitic cu un corn în frunte care se stinge de singurătate în pădurea fermecată. De sute de ani a auzit oamenii vorbind că este ultima licornă în viață și pornește singură în căutarea semenelor ei, pe teritoriul Taurului Stacojiu. Pe drum întâlnește alte personaje fantastice: vrăjitori, harpii, magicieni. Impresia inițială de basm se schimbă treptat, datorită ironiilor pe care le fac personajele, uneori sarcastice, alteori grotești.

Lectura a mers destul de greu și romanul nu m-a captivat cu adevărat. Nu mi s-a părut binevenită combinația dintre fantasticul prozei și nota ironică, acidă. Ori n-am citit-o eu în cheia potrivită. Cert este că nu am găsit susținerea ficțiunii în realitate (ce stupid!), nu m-am sincronizat cu basmul postmodern. Pe scurt: proză fantastică, simboluri, ironii, aromă de “Alice in Țara Minunilor”.

O carte mare, la propriu și la figurat, centrată pe trei personaje principale: soțul este un model de seriozitate, maturitate, chibzuință, moderație, corectitudine, pe când prietenul său cel mai bun este un rocker rebel, o fire neliniștită și libertină. Femeia se îndrăgostește inițial de rocker care însă nu profită de ea pentru că prietenul lui o place pe tânără și îi lasă să se căsătorească. Povestea prezintă viața acestui trio încă de când erau copii, apoi relația amoroasă dintre ei, căsătoria, mutarea în casa nouă, vecinii, copiii, serviciul, apoi relația extraconjugală a soției cu rockerul, refugiul soțului în muncă, secretara cea tânara care apare. Aparent este o poveste comună, dar e scrisă cu atâta sevă, cu atâta forță, încât trebuie citită. În paralel cartea este și analiza societății americane contemporane. Franzen este unul din cei mai mari scriitori americani contemporani.

I didn't read much Sci-Fi to be able to compare this novel to the others. In fact, it is more about symbols, psychology and people than about science fiction. The plot takes place on Earth, thirty years after an alien visit close to a small town.

The politic power established a military guard for the Visiting Zone, to prevent the stalkers to steal the alien artefacts and sell them to private collectors. Nevertheless, the same power uses Institute employees to research the Zone and bring the same artefacts for scientific studies.

These artefacts are symbols of knowledge and information. Who has them can make a big step in the future, using a new technology, but the regime fears about unauthorised usage. The stalkers are tough characters, very determined men, yet honest. They risk their lives to enter the Zone, but they don't value enough their life and don't know how to live it in a different way.

The society exploits the Zone and the stalkers, more and more people come to town trying to make a living there. The Zone is literally robbed, except for one particular artefact, globe-shaped, that is said to fulfill any wish. Will the stalkers succeed in finding and bringing this globe out of the Zone? Will they use it for their onw wishes?
