I think reading the screenplay made me see the faults in the movie overall. Having it written by both Gerwig and Baumbach it still establishes this heavy male narrative and perspective and the overall plot and assumed message of the movie becomes redundant. Even the descriptions lean into and devolve the movie references and idea from male lead and view films. Heists movie are used multiple times in while recently we've seen a shift and making way for more women lead heist films, it's still very male present and predominantly consists of a crew and production of men. It establishes this idea that truly women can't have any space of their own . It's up to women to claim something whether it was something original or not, and even then it's up to them when men try to take over and make a mess of things, for the women to clean up the mess and apologize even though they're not responsible.
Already this book was earth shatteringly beautiful. Just the first few chapters absolutely grabbed my heart and held onto it. What made it even more intense was the fact that my names Lily and reading a book in which part of the plot is about a girl with the same name gets into a car wreck while pregnant and with her sister driving. It made an even bigger precedent to get through this book and see the healing between these two sisters. I've never read a book that's had my heart so early on, and I can't help but think that it might be fate because I legit got this book at Target in a whim with no real thought to it. If I could write some letters right now, they would be in regard to Holly, Jack, Emma, Lily, and Emily Stone. The slow burn...chefs kiss!!! The absolute raw communication and miscommunication of Jack and Holly...perfection!!! The development and build of the most beautiful characters and plot...I am irrevocably and most ardently in love!!!
It's absolutely hard to imagine being a New Yorker who lives their everyday mundane life and could do their daily routine of taking the subway and in no way notice these two. Also, really curious to know if there were many different endings in drafting because while I love the ending I low key expected like twelve different endings than the actual one. The ending also felt a bit forced happily ever after.
