“Your eyes are wide open, but you see nothing.”
This book is... fucked up.
It's got gore, magic, feminism, adventure, murder.
The ending hurt me.
I don't really even know how to rate this because it was so good but also so... awful? But in a good way.
Wow. What a book.
Interesting magic system. Great world building. Great characters, ones I actually cared about. It takes special writing to make me care about the villains in the way I did in this book. I like how they explored each characters reasons for the way they were, and their relationships to each other. Really great portrayal of sibling dynamics. I can't wait to read the second one. I just pre-ordered it.
Fantastic. Highly recommend.
This was a fun read. Thanks to Nam for encouraging me to read it!
Big TW: Dog dies. On page. For those of us sensitive to those things.
Pip is a fun protagonist. I loved the way it was written with Pip's perspective/chapters and the transcripts and her project woven in.
Multiple twists that I definitely didn't see coming.
Would recommend this as a good YA thriller. Good way to live vicariously throught a protag who solves a murder, for those us interested in true crime.
THESE TW MIGHT BE SPOILERS SO DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED
Other TW:
rape, drugging girls at parties, statutory rape, death of parent, kidnapping, physical abuse
Oooof I had high hopes but it just wasn't for me. The ending twist was disappointing to me. I wanted it to be more slasher style I suppose. Oh well.
Unpopular opinion: This is a DNF for me. (Audiobook version)
Spoilers on why.
Expected a 5 star here.
When it got to the point where Billy and Daisy were writing all their songs together and sharing a mic and she tries to kiss him... I lost interest. Then I figured out why: I just really don't like Billy.
I don't like the way he puts her on this pedestal and portrays Daisy as a manic pixie dream girl.
The whole “I don't really know what the song was about...” When it's clearly about his boyish obsession with Daisy. The way he substituted HER for his drugs and drink. Not into it. The whole “She's dangerous” line.
The real interesting story was in Graham and Karen, and Camila's side of everything.
Oh well. I tried.
This was a big meh.
I really liked the writing style. The main character's voice was fantastic. Dry. Honest. Blunt.
The story itself ended extremely quickly. Lots of build up for a very quick release.
Would have been interested to see a story from Millicent's POV. Won't elaborate as to prevent spoilers, but if you read thrillers regularly you will see the twist miles away.
Cute middle grade! I love Schwab. I listened to this this weekend while I knit a blanket. It was a great cozy middle grade ghost story. I love Cass and Jacob's friendship.
I listened to this on Scribd. Will listen to the third one, also.
An excellent paranormal thriller. I really liked the authors writing, the pacing, the story. The twists were fantastic. I really cared about the characters. I've never actually enjoyed a book with two timelines before, and this was the first one I read where I wasn't bored with it. I will read the remainder of her works – great book!
Well written. Enticing. It's easy to figure out the ending early on, but not every book needs to be twisty and crazy. It was a good quick read.
It's a good story but shit someone needs to edit it. Towards the end the typos were bad bad.
DNF @ 40% ugh I hate to even say this but I just completely lost interest. I was really hopeful since it had dragons but I just don't care enough to keep reading.
I'm devastated this came out years ago and I'm only just now reading it. This is truly stunning. The ending had me in tears. This is a poignant reflection on a young Hollywood starlets experience, and a raw, oftentimes heartbreaking, love story.
3.5
Points for good for her trope, Millie being a badass, and Esther being observant
