Excellent novel. Sucks that I had already seen the movie first, it follows the plot-line of the book to a T, so I already knew what would happen. If you've come from the excellent Cumberbatch movie on Netflix, appreciate the writing, just know there isn't much to differentiate it.
Took a little bit longer to get going than the first three, but the ending made up for it! 4.5 stars.
Fantastic. I really enjoyed this one and look forward to more in the Shardlake series and also learning more about this period in British history, of which I know admittedly little.
A fun listen. I'm sure a spell check would have a field day with the language and I love it.
Typical McCathy - sparse, eloquent, at times horrific, and wonderful prose. A powerful read. I can see why it won the Pulitzer.
I loved this book, the premise of it, the characters and the writing . It would have been a five star review from me but for the ending. It just didn't really have the closer I was expecting.
Nostalgia for those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s and played video games, but also just a fantastic read, with similarities in some ways to A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (also a good read).
I love her prose, and yet at the same time, has i not listened to the audio books, i don't think i would have been able to finish this or A Little Life. I also wish there was a bit more of an overarching story. All three parts were so beautifully written it read like prose in need of a story. I still really liked this (3?) book(s).
Ok, I hated this one. The first book was solid, second one a little less so. Get ready to suspend your belief about half way through the third and drag yourself through the plodding and moping to the end. There are themes from Crime and Punishment here, but the end is in no way satisfying. If you liked the other two books in the series you'll likely want to close it out, hopefully you won't be as disappointed with it as I was.
An amazing audiobook. Both fascinating and horrific, but well worth the short listen.
As an archivist with the manuscripts and archives department at Yale University for over 35 years, my mother would have loved this historical fiction. Any one with even a passing interest in preservation and inner library workings or those looking for romantic and robber-baron intrigue in the early 20th century would enjoy this novel. I look forward to visiting the Morgan library some day.
I loved the Martian. I did not like Artemis at all, it just didn't resonate with me. Hail Mary is a return to form for Andy Weir. A great read.
A must read. Harrowing, depressing, but essentially look into the shortfalls and let downs in our housing and social safety nets in this country. Just the thing to listen to as I'm packing up my house to move to remind myself just how much i have and how fortunate i am in this life.
A River in Darkness: One Man's Escape from North Korea
The real North Korea
Want to know the story about the real North Korea, the one without the minders and censors, without Denis Rodman and hooey from Donald Trump? This is the meaning of true poverty, desperation, deprivation and starvation? Read this book and know.
3.5 stars. I think Clinton probably wrote about 5%. Fun read, but formulaic as you would expect from a mass market thriller. Interesting premise for sure.
A fantastic read (well listen in my case). I was hooked on every word. Beautifully written with characters so well fleshed out you feel like you know them personally. Was sad to reach the end.
It is a great novel. It presents the Germans during WWII as they were. Not all were Nazi sympathizers, and many risked their lives to help their Jewish friends and neighbors.
Forrest Gump is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time, yet I had never read the book it was based on. Well, there's just enough divergent in the plot lines between the two that they're both quite enjoyable. A fun little read.
Third book in, i feel like i know an old friend, albeit one who's had a number of brushes with death. Look forward to the other books in the series.
3.5 stars really. Not a bad read, well written but quite slow and plodding in the middle. It could have maybe used some tighter editing? I'm not sure I would have finished had I not been listening to the audiobook.
