Loved these. It's always amazing to me how many level Sir Terry can write on at the same time. On the face of it, it's a Borrowers like trilogy that kids will love. And yet, there's all this commentary on society, religion etc that you catch if you're older. And some great moments of humor.
It's very early Pratchett and it's hard to evaluate it on its own without thinking of Discworld.
First time I've read the original. It's wonderful! FYI to parents though, there are a few problematic bits (for example the “redskins”) but don't let that stop you. Wonderful story and better than the Disney version. Tim Curry at narrator was also awesome (as he always is).
According to my records here, I've listened to this 4 times since 2009. It's still awesome and I think everyone should read it. It's both fascinating and I think useful although I hope to never have to utilize any of the usefulness.
Very interesting to read a book set in modern day Nigeria. I need to seek out more books that are non-US/UK authors.
It's almost painful to give this book 3 stars. It's THE LAST DISCWORLD BOOK EVER. And I liked it, and it finished off the Tiffany Aching series nicely but it's just not as good as earlier Pratchett (much like “Raising Steam”). Lots of cameo moments and attempts to tie up loose ends but the the level of prose just isn't there. But still 3 stars for Pratchett is probably 4 for almost anyone else!
GNU Sir Terry Pratchett
Good if you like D&D. Had some really nice moments but I don't feel that I need to read the rest of the series.
Excellent first novel! Actually just excellent novel period. And Ferrett is a super awesome person. But that's not why you just read this. You should read it because he's written a book about interesting, flawed people and an unusual magic system that's not quite like any other book I've read.
Loved this! Cary is wonderful and they got most of the cast to do their own narration. If you're a Princess Bride fan, you'll love this.
Phenomenal book. One of the best this year. And unlike some of the other related books I've read, this one is written by someone who understands all the physics (he's worked in the field for decades). Although he is fairly detailed about the physics, it's so well written. My only “gripe” is that this book is so information dense that I'm going to HAVE to reread this one. Oh darn!
Update: and now I have! It was just as good the second time.
Excellent new look at archeological data. Previous theories about the island and its inhabitants are seriously revised.
It's rare that a second book is better than the first for me. Equal? Yes. But rarely better. This is one of those exceptions and I'm looking forward to book 3.
Funny little piece of history that was absolutely fascinating. Tom Standage, as usual, writes wonderfully.
Well bloody hell. That didn't end the way I expected it to (and that's not a bad thing!). Unsurprisingly as Case NIGHTMARE GREEN continues to approach, the Laundry series continues to get darker. I don't want to say too much because this one in particular really needs to not have anything approaching spoilers. But argh! What I actually said when the audio ended (BTW the audio version kicks some serious butt) was “Well sh*t”. I cannot wait for the next one (late next year alas!). Well played again Mr. Stross!
