Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Absolutely fascinating. I recommend this to any of my friends on the geeky end as it has lots of juicy technical bits. That said, don't be scared off by that as one could skim those bits and still really enjoy the historical aspects.
Loved this! I really want a 4.5 star, no a 6 star scale. There's definitely two tiers of I loved this and will read again books that don't make the “run around squeeing” 5 star category.
So, on a 6 star scale this is a 5 star book and I really hope Seanan plays more in this universe.
Loved this. I would have given it 5 stars but that's because I'm a volcano nut and not because it's quite a 5 star book. But it was really, really, good.
John Hodgman (unsurprisingly) was an amazing narrator for this book. I'll agree with everything I've read about his being a precursor to Douglas Adams even though Adams had never read Sheckley prior to HHGTTG publication. Great stuff.
Meh but nice to see a vampire book that acknowledges all the murders that pile up over the years. This is not a sparkly vampire but he is a lawyer. :)
I'm amazed it took this long for a biography to be written about Jim Henson. This is a beautifully researched book. As a life long Muppet fan, I learned a lot of history and fun bits about one my favorite things in the world. It dragged (for me) a little but I think that was more about my tolerance for biography length (Audible 3 parter) than anything wrong with the book. Definitely go look up Wilkins and Wontkins on YouTube!
I really like this series. Although it's billed as YA and it would be totally appropriate for that age range, I actually think that adults might enjoy it more due to the references tucked away in the narration (as is typical for Fforde).
S.A. has definitely become an author on my “purchase immediately when anything new comes out” list.
Not as strong as the first book but still very worthwhile. I will continue to keep up with the series.
Another solid book from Martinez. It started a little slow for me but turned out great. “Too Many Curses” is still by favorite Martinez book though.
A solid book from Sedaris. Still doesn't top “Me Talk Pretty One Day” but well worth the listen (which is the only way to read Sedaris in my opinion.)
Well I tore through that like there was no tomorrow. It's good. I need to read it again more slowly. I think I may need the audio version (which Neil as usual for his work narrates himself). It reminds me a bit of “Coraline” in that the protagonist is a child and that there's more than a touch of horror in the magic. It's almost a YA that's way too scary for YA. It's not my new favorite Gaiman but the more I read, the more it grew on me. I'll be back to this one for sure.
Update: I liked it even more as an audiobook. Neil's narration as usual was great. I felt that I got a lot more out it at the slower pace that audiobooks keep me at.
Started out well but despite some good action scenes, I just couldn't like a single one of the characters. Definitely will not be reading the rest of the series even if it is free.
I loved this. It didn't go where I was expecting it to and the audio version gets five stars for the narration. I'll have to think about how to expand this review without giving anything away. :)
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. In many ways, it reminded me of Book 2 of the Hunger Games. In both cases, book 2 is very dark and sometimes hard to take. It was quite grim at times. The end had a twist I really wasn't expecting and I'm looking forward to book 3. I think I'd find it hard to reread this one but that will ultimately depend on how it all turns out.
This was great. If you classify yourself as any kind of video game/scifi/anime/LARP/etc geek, this is a really fun book.
Update: Audio version is good as well. I wasn't quite sure about the narrator at first but I got into her and decided I quite liked her by the end.
