Beautiful illustrations! I enjoyed reading through the book. The images seemed to jump out at you - and with the distortions of a digital copy, I can only imagine how beautiful the print version is!
Great information on the monsters, mythical beasts, fairies, etc., that are contained in the book - and it was a fun way to spend the evening.
How do you fight those that are dead? How do you protect something that is haunted by ghosts?
In the haunted village, nothing is as it seems, and visiting there just might cost you your life. There are those who are attempting to fight back, but they do not get very far before they are cut down. Then there is the child, one who can command the ghosts, even those who are dangerous to everyone else. What do they want with him?
This was an amazing book! I kept holding my breath, trying to figure out what was going to happen next! From the ghost Kimberly, who is killing at an alarming rate, to the men trying to protect Abel Worthe, the story took a few twists and turns that I was not expecting! I will be waiting with baited breath to see what happens in the next book!
A cute little story of a parent and child going to check out the stars and then finding that the same thing they were chasing can be found at home.
I loved this story! Going to share this one with my boys. The illustrations were amazing and guided you through the book.
Everyone knows the story of Titanic, but this book takes a different perspective, one of a passenger aboard the Carpathia, the boat which rescued the Titanic survivors.
It was a great read, and one that I think young readers will enjoy! Engaging and well-written.
I enjoyed reading through this biographical work of Arthur Plantagenet. Although he lived through some of the more tumultuous times of England, the surviving writings, and those of contemporaries give us a pretty good picture of this uncle of Henry VIII.
Sarah-Beth Watkins did a fabulous job in fleshing this person out, bringing another figure hidden by history back into the light. I enjoyed reading through this book! Highly recommend this one for history buffs.
When a pyromaniac ghost is set loose, flames are literally licking at the edges of each page. Molly can't help herself, as setting fires has been something she has been doing for ages. Victor and Tom are working to stop her as quickly as possible - without getting caught in the flames themselves.
Fabulous read, and ohhh, it was hard to put down!
I enjoyed reading through this book, and learning more about the Irish-American soldiers and their songs.
The songs not only evoke a sense of their past, but their hopefulness as well.
Great read!
I absolutely LOVED this book! Ancient Egyptian history is often interpreted through small bits of information gleaned from the most unlikely places, and the pieces of papyri that were discovered opened new doors. As archaeologists began to decipher the small pieces, the history and story of those who were working on the Great Pyramid were discovered.
This book was well done, drawing the reader into the pages as though they were along for the excavation, and the subsequent deciphering of the materials. I truly enjoyed reading through this book!
Egyptian history is among my favorite to study and read about. Reading about the Great Pyramid, the pharaoh who was building it, and the every day workers who were responsible for its creation was enjoyable. This book flows well, and keeps the readers engaged throughout.
I enjoyed the stories that were presented in this book. Nothing too terrifying, and they were interesting enough to keep me reading all the way through.
While there has been a theory that Jack the Ripper could have been a policeman, this book takes it further.
Rod Beattie names a suspect, a policeman, who, through different misfortunes, has been basically relieved of his duties as a police officer during the Ripper murders.
While I believe the theory has some merit, the evidence in this book was seriously lacking, and there isn't anything that makes one think, “ahh, this could seriously be a possible suspect.”
Interesting read, but rather disappointing overall.
As the third book kicks off, the dynamics are changing from the second book. As Marcus and his small band work together, they watch as another home is brought into the village, and a new ghost that they are going to have to deal with.
As a new member is brought in, the group tries in vain to save him ... but time will tell if they are going to be successful or not.
Absolutely enjoyed this one! I could not put it down until I had finished! For horror fans, this is a series that you are going to want to read!
George Reisner brought in the modern age of archaeology, and made some spectacular finds along the way.
Peter Der Manuelian dives into the life of Reisner, from his beginnings, through education, and then into the field of archaeology. While there were some bumps along the way, Reisner continued to rise above, and push through, becoming the father of modern archaeology (although some argue that Howard Carter also bears this title), and bringing forth some of the great finds that we see today.
I enjoyed reading through this book! There was a lot of information, but it was broken down in pretty easy to follow segments, and there were some images throughout, lending to the subject matter at hand. When this is in print form, I would love to see a copy, as I feel that the images will better suited in that format.
Overall, fabulous read! If you are interested in Egyptian history, then you are not going to want to miss this book! I absolutely LOVED it!
Fox Hollow Farm was the home to a serial killer, who was dumping bodies in the woods behind his home. After his suicide, there were reports of hauntings and other happenings at the farm. This book walks through some of the investigations that were done, including one who survived the serial killer, and some of his recollections and recountings of things that happened to him while revisiting the area.
This was an interesting read - as I enjoyed the true crime aspect, and some of the supposed happenings around Fox Hollow.
Intriguing short story, featuring a dementia patient and a home health nurse. I enjoyed reading through this one, and don't want to give too much of the story away - as it was a short book.
Fun read.
The Winter Garden follows the story of Anne and Lucy. Lucy is in the modern age, and is intrigued by some archaeological work going on at her aunts home, as well as the guy doing the work.
Anne Catesby is living under Queen Elizabeth, and later, King James. Her family means everything to her, even her wild and spoiled son. She hopes marriage to him will calm him down - which it does.
When his family dies suddenly from illness, Robert goes back to his wild ways, eventually falling in with the plot to blow up parliament and the king on the 5th of November.
While Lucy and Anne both have their own hardships to work through, the mystery of the ghostly lady keeps Lucy interested in the manor, and what could cause this ghost to connect so deeply with her.
An interesting story, and one that I enjoyed reading.
This was interesting - some of the stories will make you roll your eyes, but some of them are enjoyable.
When a little ghost wants to learn to start scaring, her parents help her, but she is unable to scare anyone. Her parents agree to send her to the scariest ghost to learn the practice.
However, when she arrives, she finds he is just scared himself, not looking to scare other people.
Enjoyed reading through this! I love a different type of ghost story!
When a climb goes wrong, there is not much that can be done, other than trying to get help.
Hidden Mountains goes into the story of such a climb, one that went horribly wrong, leaving one person paralyzed, and another living with the guilt of surviving, as well as becoming a constant caregiver to her boyfriend.
As four friends set out for the trip of a lifetime, they could not know that their lives were about to change. The wilderness of Alaska can be unforgiving, and while there are many dangers that one can see, not all of them are within an eye's view.
This book follows the perilous hours that the climbers were on the mountain, the rescue and its personnel, and the harrowing hours of the ‘not knowing' while they waiting for more answers.
I enjoyed reading through this book, and the insights that were gained from it. While most of us enjoy the outdoors, anything, including climbing, can be dangerous. Even planning for every possible “could happen” does not guarantee that you are prepared for the unexpected.
Great read overall.
What happens when you get dumped into a village full of the dead? Marcus is about to find out. Mr. Worthe has created a village of the dead, moving homes into a secured area, and then dropping test subjects to see how they manage. Marcus has, so far, lasted far longer than anyone expected, and now has additional people to care for.
He also has the help of one of the ghosts, that he has released from her torment, and he is determined to alleviate at least one of the stronger ghosts.
I truly enjoyed this book! It was amazing! Shorter chapters allow for a better stopping point as needed, and just the right amount of creep factor. Ron Ripley is one of my favorite authors.
A cute little story about mermaids and their surroundings. I LOVED the images in this book!
I look forward to seeing this one in print!
This was an interesting read, although it was overshadowed a bit. I was hoping for something a bit more robust in the pages, delving deeper into some of the other women's lives, and that of their husbands, but it was not meant to be.
Decent, but not my favorite read of the year.
This was an interesting read. I enjoyed it, although there were a few places where it felt that it lagged a little bit.
Overall, a great one for those who enjoy true crime.
If you love true crime, then you are going to LOVE this book! I enjoyed reading through the different cases, as the techniques that were used to solve them. Many of the cases I was familiar with, but the background that was given, and the many different steps that were taken was truly eye-opening.
Highly recommend this read!
If your child loves dinosaurs, then they are going to LOVE this book! It is a super cute story on how paleontologists excavate dinosaur bones, where they look, how they transport them, and put the skeleton together.
I absolutely LOVED reading through this book. It was a fun and interactive way to teach kids a bit about a scientific field, while having some fun at the same time. There are fun facts throughout as well, providing even more information on a level that younger readers can understand.
Well done and tops the list of favorite reads for the year!
