China and Japan are two civilizations that have history stretching back quite a ways. Through this book, which is two books in one, you are getting their history, myths, royals, and more.
I learned so many things from Japan and China that I was not familiar with, as I have not done a lot of study on these two civilizations. I did truly enjoy each read, and think this is the perfect way to introduce youths to ancient civilizations.
Get lost in a great book, have a bit of artistic fun with some of the activities, and check your knowledge as you go! Great for schools, libraries, and the voracious reader who wants to keep learning!
If you ever wondered about the people or stories behind some of the hymns that are sung in Church, this is your book!
I enjoyed the short bios and information provided on the hymns contained in this book. Admittedly, I prefer the older ones, as the newer ones don't seem to have the same depth.
Great overviews and commentary!
If you are looking for a fun and entertaining way to learn about the National Parks - you need to get this book! What a cute way to read through the history of the parks, foundations, heartbreaks, and so much more! You can see some of the wildlife, protective acts, the building of Hetch Hetchy (much to the dismay of John Muir), and get an idea of the importance of National Parks.
I enjoyed multiple aspects of the book, and it fit in perfectly with some of the books that I have been reading on the National Parks lately. I look forward to seeing this book in print, and highly recommend it for home libraries as well as schools!
Get kids interested in history the fun way - with a comic book!
This was a fabulous and well put together short story. I really enjoyed reading through this one! It will take you back to Ancient Egypt, and the tale of a man who has lived through thousands of years...
Perfect for the beginning of the year!
I enjoyed this one - as Hans Holzer did a lot of different research, bringing some unique stories and perspectives. A great read if you are looking for a short weekend book!
I absolutely adored this book! I always enjoy reading or watching documentaries on ocean life, and this was just as fun as a television show. I would love to see this one in print, as I can imagine that the images and illustrations within the book would be of much better quality.
For those who love sea life, or are interested in plants and animals, this is a fabulous book to dive into! Perfect for younger readers as well!
As we navigate the craziness of Covid, it is nice to know that we are not alone in history. There have been numerous plagues and pandemics throughout, and here, the author breaks them down nicely.
If you are looking for something that gives a little more information on these pestilences, give those who are not familiar with an introduction to sicknesses through history.
Interesting and engaging - I enjoyed this book.
Get “in the know” with the low down on all the ups and downs of the Middle Ages. Matthew Lewis has provided an excellent look inside the many different rebellions and uprisings that occurred and lays it out in an easy-to-follow format.
I have never been disappointed with Matthew Lewis's books, and this was no exception. From William the Conquerer to the Wars of the Roses, the cousins, war. and so much more - you are going to dive into a time of history that was as fascinating as it was deadly.
Get lost in history (and survive) with this exciting book.
I was excited to read a book about Blackbeard, but this is not what I was expecting. While we do not know a lot about Blackbeard himself, aside from legend and the few references that we have - most is based on conjecture and theory.
I was a bit disappointed with this read. There is some great information there, but some of it is rather boring and it was slogging through, but there are areas of the book that just grab you and keep you engaged.
Toss up on this one - interesting many areas, but still dull in others.
This book was amazing!!! Anthony Nicholas did a fabulous job, and once again, those who perished on the Titanic are brought to life through the pages of a book.
We learn more about the crew, and their heroic efforts to save as many as possible, mistakes that were made, and the band that played as the ship slipped beneath the waves. It is in many ways a profound read that is going to take readers back in time, with a fascinating look on those who were on board, rather than the sinking of the vessel itself.
Highly recommend this book!
I really LOVED this book! I enjoy reading about different creatures, and just recently lectured about the prehistoric creatures that would have roamed before and during the Ice Age.
This book was a treat, getting to see some of the rather creepy animals that once roamed the earth.
Highly enjoyed this read!
I really struggled with reading this book. I set it down multiple times and came back to it, hoping to get through it. I am not sure if it was the writing style or the real lack of information (new or otherwise) on these ladies that just failed to capture my attention.
We know almost nothing about the first Isabella, but the second is better documented - to a point. John was a larger than life, in your face, can't get around him person - and women were just shadowed due to the norms of the day. While the author did her best to bring some new information to the front - I didn't learn or read anything new that I had not seen already.
This was a bit different from what I was originally expecting, but a great read overall. Can be difficult in some areas for combat veterans, but worth the time to read.
While I never deployed, I appreciated the journey - and the insights from this Marine. It was poinient, and brings some awareness to some of the day-to-day that many are not aware of. His obsession with Alexander the Great was just a fabulous bonus to this book.
I look forward to seeing more from this author.
While the Greek myths are not new, it was fun to sit down and re-read through some of my favorites. I enjoy the shortened versions, and it is a great teaching tool to use in the classroom as well. Shorter and more concise versions allow for kids to pay attention a bit longer, and it is nice to just relax with a great story.
If you are looking to brush up, reacquaint, or just find a fun book - this is a good one to sit down with.
I was excited to find this book as I was preparing a history talk on the battle of Gettysburg. I was blown away with the amount of information the author shared here, and the depth of the analysis that he undertook to delve into the battle.
Gettysburg is one of my favorite areas of study, and so to find a book that talks ONLY about Gettysburg (yes, there are many), while giving readers not only an insight into the three day affair, but takes on some of the myths, different takes, and discusses both sides - well, I loved it.
Great book overall, and one that I will be recommending students to read!
I absolutely LOVED reading through these ancient civilizations! I have always been fascinated by the Maya, the Aztec, and the Inca - but having them in one book allowed me to flip through and compare a few things from each civilization. I am excited to share this book with my boys, as it is something that they can easily read, and learn something at the same time!
There are some little activities throughout as well, so you can check your knowledge as you move through.
Great for kids of all ages, and a perfect companion for those who love to read!
Medicine in the Middle Ages was a fabulous read! I had a professor who used to laugh when discussing medical practices in medieval times during a course, and as I read through this book, I got a deeper understanding as to why he got such a chuckle.
Now, if you have a weak stomach, there are some areas of this book that will bother you, but I absolutely loved reading through this one! It was fabulous! The author did a great job and was able to give a full picture, the good, the bad, and the ugly of the medical practices of the time.
I definitely recommend reading through this book, as you will have a new appreciation for medical services today.
I was not super familiar with many of the Norse myths. I knew about Valhalla, but that was about it. Pretty sad! I enjoyed sitting down and reading through the many different myths, goddesses and gods that were prevalent in the Norse Civilization.
This was a fun and interesting read, and I learned a bit as I went through these great stories. I highly recommend picking up this book and finding something new!
There were some areas of Africa that I was more familiar with, such as Egypt and Kush, but this book goes further. With this book from Captivating History, you are going to walk from Ancient to Medieval, and into the more modern areas of Africa. From Egypt to Bornu, Ghana, and more - learn a bit more about Africa!
I enjoyed this read, and the activities that were at the end of each chapter. This is perfect for classrooms and libraries!
Absolutely fantastic! I was hooked from the start as I was reading this book. It was wonderful.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are off on another adventure. Dr. Watson has taken his wife to Egypt to recover from her tuberculosis, and there, he runs into his old friend, Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is undercover, attempting to find a missing Duke, and Watson gets pulled into the investigation as it moves forward.
A missing Duke, the promise of an unplundered tomb, and a case so intriguing that you are going to be unable to put the book down once you start. I am suffering from a horrible book hangover, but excited to see what else this author has to offer!
Revisit Egypt, and another case with Sherlock Holmes.
