I almost give it four stars since it is such a simple story. It gets five stars because it was a simple story that kept you caring and wondering for the old man. And when you took time to see the story as applying somehow outside the narrative, it was not difficult to find connections. I can see why this is a classic and gained Hemingway the ultimate awards.
This book was bought more because of the cover, I admit it, with a good author attached to it. I love covers artwork!
At times, eye opening and absolutely what I needed. And at times, tedious and the language even above my MDiv head, not connecting with me. But, it averages out to be a book I am glad I got and I have at least one chapter I want to share with people. If I get even one quote from a book, I am happy, but I have a whole chapter from this book (chapter 26).
I hope to check the rest of the series out someday.
Forward by Drew Carey and commentary by Bermuda are all well done. The photos are a nice collection.
This was well done. Actual explanations of what the text was saying and history at times. Not pure sermon good feel, but not too academic.
Another fantastic book. The full truth she shares is daring and educational. She covered many ideas I took 5 years in seminary and 3 1/2 years in a recovery program to learn. She has worked hard and is able to clearly share her insights. This helps all people, not only BIPOC. I am grateful for this work.
At couple times a bit too detailed, almost repetitive, overall, it is well-written and every word is utilized and has a purpose. There are no moments of “why was that told?” or “what a waste of a few pages.” The vivid writing made me want pictures but did replace some of the need for pictures.
A book thoroughly chronicling a person's search for identity and world view. Stating many questions and wonders most people have while also presenting clearly the perspective of others. Due to its intelligence and clear language, I enjoyed it.
I adored this book. It has life-changing ideas with doable steps. The examples help demonstrate the ideas not force you to be her. Very well done!
I have many notes and ideas to work on but I don't feel overwhelmed either.
This basically is the next step: you determined what you love but now the act of living with what you have matters and how your life flows with and around it all.
Simply put, you looked at your stuff, now look at your lifestyle (which is what “kurashi” means).
I read his memoir the day after his death from about 3:30 AM until 10:00 AM; all read in one session. It was very well done. Per the New York Times article, no ghostwriter and he made his deadlines. I had preordered it but it is not unusual for me not to read a book right away. It helped me process his sudden passing. Whatever the coroner's findings will be, I won't be surprised – even if his death was purely an accident.
He shared a difficult story very well. No hagiography and also no complete thrashing of self or annoyingly long apologies. There was hope when he wrote it. He will be missed.
So much in such a small story. I enjoyed it immensely and hope to return to it each Christmas.
The theology helped recognize our downfalls while specific, actionable steps are given. I liked this mix immensely. These steps are useful for interfaith, intrafaith and any other form of intercultural dialogue processes.
Well written - concise but not melodramatic. Detailed but not minutiae. I tripped upon it but read it in one day.
Sweet but I am concerned about what this teaches children re: dangerous animals. Most children get that this was very unusual. I downloaded it for free on Amazon's World Day.
Nicely formatted ebook. A verse a page. I like the cover's colors matching her outfit. One poem with a nice forward by Oprah.
Loved the illustrations - a lot of detail.
Sweet words and meant for everyone. The last page has the dedication and fits the book, too - “live with mystery.” This book is never literal. All metaphorical and kind of quoting Christian scripture without it directly doing so, which I'd expect from a Christian writer, yet I liked how it was really all encompassing.
A good, fun but honest read. A bit repetitive at times but I enjoyed it. No mention of his break dancing though.
I got to page 56 and couldn't go further. The repetitiveness was annoying. On top of that, the five year old writing style when there was a co-writer!? I understand wanting to have a natural, conversational style, but, ... ugh.
Enjoyable historic fiction. I found the short and concise chapters helpful in not ever feeling bogged down while also getting enough details without feeling like we were prying into someone's life. I learned a lot of historical facts while being told a story that I knew was not known as fact but which was then even more insightful.
Whew! I had to listen to the book to get through the specifics of the political situations. Well written but it can get a bit drudgery. I enjoyed this book immensely actually but it won't get a second read anytime soon (maybe a second listen to someday). His voice was good to listen to. This review is attached to the Kindle format because I went back and forth between reading and listening. Sometimes, since the iPad Kindle app does this, I read along as it is being read to me. That can help, too, if I am tired but not tired enough to go to sleep. There were a few snippets about private life but mainly it was about specific work situations and how he processed them. He was honest about mistakes and even direct about views of people and moments that were not perfect. I am looking forward to volume 2.
Not necessary to buy this book or buy it in hardcover. Once read, I won't need to read it again. I'll keep it because I'll pick it up, read the Table of Contents and have enough of a reminder to know the book again. Just seeing it will make me smile. But I'm glad I own it - it makes me smile.
These things hit right when you need them. I started rereading as soon as I was finished.
This book is exactly what I needed! I have tried reading comic books my whole life but just couldn't get into it. I now see style, genre, and my timing needs all have to be satisfied. Superhero comics aren't all there are of comics. So much to investigate. This is the place to start if comics haven't been something you understood.
