Didn't like the concept when first getting introduced to it, but he explains it very well to show all desire is to become happy and the utilitarianism being coherent with justice.
The book was pretty good but it took some time until you got hooked and it started to get interesting.
Written in rimes, certainly fun to read, and seems to be quiet unknown.
Just four characters and a inn.
Nice introduction to the history of capitalism, splits capitalism into periods which are very useful when thinking about it.
Those broadly being:
- pre industrial
- industrial
- financial
Thinking back to reading it, that was one of the books that had such an iconic use of English that it changed my own.
Hemingways use of language is very characteristic, I can't put into words what it was, but it changed something for me. Something clicked
Should be a mandatory read for everybody using technology, or at least for those pursuing the field of computer sciences.
Habe nach dem Homo Faber viel erwartet aber durch den sehr eigenen Schreibstil dieses Buches war ich wieder neu von Max Frisch beeindruckt.
Expected way lots of new things in this marxist read, but it ended up being Marx and Engels recited and corrected after the 50 years between those's main period.
It was nothing very impressive, he basically said “oh but recently that happened, marx said that wouldnt happen decades ago”.
And the last third he starts rambling about his own theory about revolution.
Disappointed with this one.
Less ideology based than I expected it. Much more based on history and contemporary proceedings instead. It having 8 prefaces is also interesting, Marx and Engels added onto it while things related happened e.g. the actions of the Paris Commune 1871. When Marx died Engels continued to write those.
Proletarier vereinigt euch.
Maybe not the most in depth but the point brought across perfectly with examples and experiences.
One of the very few fiction books which I've read that were not classics but stunningly good.
Despite having been around for nearly 50 years, It could still have an impact on culture. It is a very optimistic but unrealistic utopian work.
It mentions interesting ideas and systems.
The writing consists of fictional newspaper article and the protagonist's diary while being sent as an American journalist into the country of Ecotopia.
I did not get it, but it appears like he is on to some things.
Having the homo doloris, trading “Glueck” for “Glueckseligkeit”, passion and entertainment take the reader through the pages. It is written most precicely nice and german fashion. I just highlighted the whole book and maybe I'll get it on the next try.
Enjoyed this one very much. Thesis is that capitalism has ended and we are now in the system of “Technofeudalism”. The feudal lord being big tech companies and the serfs e.g. users of their services.
Novel thoughts, well written, guided in a discussion between Varoufakis and his dad.
There's something interesting about a crazy intellectual. Independent of the subject, if it's an Erdős that has just fun doing math all his life or if it's a Wittgenstein that nearly drives himself to suicide with it.
Had really high estimations, but i think they were fulfilled.
A thing that wondered me that i was quite entertained all 700 pages of it, even when ˜350 pages were just two days. Will need to take some time to understand it.
One thing i can recommend to readers is to make some form of table or mind-map to keep track of all the names, nicknames and maybe even connections, on too many pages i encountered some character i wasn't quite aware of, simply because i always forgot all the names.
Brilliant book. I've found what I was searching for when reading this book without having any idea what to expect on picking it to read.
It deals with obsession to the point of mania, here, with chess.
Love this one. Easter talks about the comfort society and what we need to be aware of to not degrade our body. That while telling about his own experiences going outside of the comfort, interjected by scientific explanations to the topic.
I think this could be a very beneficial read if cherished.
Expected way too much, I imagine this would've been my favorite book, if I'd have read it 1949-2000 but now all of those dystopian thoughts are not that unrealistic anymore. I missed content in the book, read 300 pages but it felt like only 50 but in the way of it just lacking content. Not sure what to think about it.
Something different than what i read usually, but quite interesting and well written.
