I like the magic system in this book and think the idea is interesting. However, I found the plot twists and the action of the book very predictable and at times child like.
I also cannot seem to care for any of these characters, perhaps only a little bit about Elm. They either have no personality or are simply clichés (purely evil prince, bethrothed hungry for power, etc.)
I would be interested to see how the story continues, but I don't know if I will read the sequel with these characters and the writing.
I think this is an amazing book IF you do the tandem read.
I can see how reading this as a standalone can drag on for way too long.
However, the vibes in the Southern Continent are unmatched. Also, the Chaol redemption arc is real. Great character development. He really went from cardboard cutout -> asshole -> likeable. Well done as always SJM ;)
The first book was great, but this one almost put me in a reading slump.
Just stop at the first book, the answers you might want after the ending of that one are not worth it.
Also the author managed to mention this man's chest hair atleast 6 times?
a good, cute romance palate cleanser after a heavy book. bonus points for being a floppy paperback
as Heather Mclarry likes to say: this book is no braincells, just vibes. If you expect a literary masterpiece with a crazy plot, you will be dissapointed.
I like the author and what she's trying to do. This + the floppy paperback is bouncing this to a generous 2.5 stars.
This book had the most insufferable protagonist I've ever read about. She acts like a 9 year old, and an immature one at that.
The MMC was really trying to save this book, but I can't overlook the cheesy writing, unacceptable actions of the main character and the insta love/attraction.
So much happening in a single book!
Action packed, couldn't put it down. immediately starting the next 2 as tandem read
I like how the war plot thickens, I found the smut and the miscommunication trope to be excessive.
Alot of info dump but i've honestly had a good time. I will also read the 3rd book
A book called happy place should not make you cry as much as this did
I am not sure what to rate this book. I have so many mixed and STRONG emotions when I think of the story
- on the one hand I hated how close it hit to home and how many times I cried while reading this
- on the other hand, the way Emily Henry is able to depict such deep topics in only a few hundred pages is baffling. Amazing writing. You could highlight/mark almost the whole book.
Hell yea I absolutely loved this
Besides the last 15 or so pages which had me LIVID so 4.5 stars
First third is a bit too slow for my liking, but it really picks up afterwards.
I don't care much for war flashbacks, seeing as I DNF'ed the American Sniper. However, in this case I think they were very well included and relevant for character development.
The more I think about the ending, the more I like it. Still bawled my eyes out tho
Reread: I needed to go back to this world and read some Rhys dialogue to really pick me up.
I don't know why people hate on this, it's a nice and cozy Christmas vibes novella.
the amount of times I was jawdropped while reading this should be illegal
when Indy said “Can you growl?” like her book boyfriends, I completely lost it. After reading 8 SJM books this year, that line was the best thing I've read
ryan shay entered the top 3 best MMCs out there ;) the author knows what's good
wow Bo is ABSOLUTELY perfect. Zero flaws. I love him so much. Golden retriever energy
possibly baby fever?!
This book played like a movie in my head. I could imagine everything so clearly, I had an absolute blast
The last 100 pages were absolutely insane, but I didn't expect anything else from SJM. Glued to the book
LOVE Bryce and Hunt. I think it will get even better with the 2nd book
DNF ~ 50%, way too violent and explicit for my taste. this book should come with a plethora of trigger warnings... I liked the premise, but it's just too dark in execution.
