This is deliciously - pun very much intended - spooky and gory! Takeda's art is gorgeous of course and i was surprised to find such funny parts, mostly Billy's reaction to things.
Can't wait for the next in the series!
I really liked this! A couple of the stories in the middle didn't quite work for me but I LOVED “I come from the water.” I think I always struggle with short stories because I always want MORE and by their nature, you don't get more.
This is a unique collection of intertwined stories and definitely worth a read!
This absolutely deserves all the awards it has won. It also deserves to be read slowly so that you can fully experience it. The relationship between Little Ash and Uriel is perfect and I loved seeing them both grow. A must read!
This book perfectly captures what it feels like to have anxiety and depression: your brain is constantly telling you that you are a piece of trash, a failure, that everything nice everyone has ever said to you is a lie, etc. It's an important reminder to try to take care of yourself, be kind to yourself first so you have the energy to be kind to others, and remember that joy is possible!
A gorgeously illustrated story of a girl struggling with disorder eating and grief. Realistic in the way she starts down recovery but doesn't give any easy answers.
This is absolute PERFECTION! Everything about it is great for English lit fans, comics fans, and fans of chaos!
A perfect book about accepting and growing into yourself. The mix of humor and heartfelt seriousness makes this a winner.
This is really intriguing! I'm curious to see where the series goes in terms of the “nostalgia” theme and what that really means to the author. Is it amnesia? Another life? I want to find out!
This was great. It was beautifully written and a real page turner! I loved the Survivor-esque reality show framing and how it's about not just surviving, but becoming and being.
This book radiates love and care from Ogle's grandmother. She is a wonderful refuge in the face of awful circumstances for him.
This was a really sweet, family story! I want a sequel about Dicta - such a a character!
I enjoyed this coming of age story a lot. On some ways, I feel like it suffers in comparison to Last Night at the Telegraph Club but I think that is because it's SO good almost anything would feel like a let down.
I LOVED this so much! The magic system, Laura's personality, the way Ireland weaves in history and myth and social commentary all into a great story.
I hope there is a sequel!!
Another book for true crime fans who feel conflicted about liking true crime!
I really liked this one. I think the characterization of Lucy and Carolina was so good and I was suspicious of Maggie from the beginning!! .
It's one that is going to keep me thinking about the nature of the fog in the canyon and whether its effects were supernatural or just extremely natural human reactions to heightened emotions like fear and greed.
This was great! I only learned about Fern from her appearance on Taskmaster and she was so funny and weird and delightful on it. I appreciate how she wrote about her autism think this is a great book for anyone wanting to learn more and laugh along the way.
This was a great, vintage-inspired horror that isn't too scary! Super fun and great for Stranger Things fans who want some nostalgia and hijinks.
I really enjoyed this! I can't speak to the parallels between this and Carrie, since I only know that from cultural existence, but the book works well on its own. The podcast transcript and other ephemera are well done and the ending leaves a lot of mystery, which I always enjoy.
Finally, I will say that I found Maddy's home life with her father really difficult to read so I imagine if you have any issues surrounding parental abuse/violence, just have a heads up.
This took me a long time to finish because it's brutal. My heart breaks for girls who are in these situations. This is going to sit with me for a long time.
I really like this. It's a bit like if The Fifth Season and Evangelion had a baby and the baby was Joan of Arc. I think Yang does a good job of exploring the fine line between delusion/fanaticism and faith. My one wish was that the side of the Heretics was explored a bit more. It seemed obvious to me that they weren't as “bad” as perhaps the Church/Throne made them out to be but I think the text could have done a little bit more in that regard, but that's just me!
I liked this but for some reason it felt very much like the first one. It isn't necessarily a bad thing - I love a trope! - but it just didn't work for me. Still pretty fun though!
