A passable Lovecraftian horror comic (lots of tentacles) with a story that is fine. Veronica Fish's art is great though!
I honestly can't understand how Tara didn't die from some sort of horrible, neglectful junkyard accident as a child! A lot gorier than I expected but fascinating and inspiring. I would have loved to hear a little bit more about how she views her faith or lack thereof today. Super interesting!
Stacey Lee writes the best historical fiction! Great characters, interesting time periods, and usually a late book action sequence. This time it's a horse race! Great for horse girls, plucky girls, and word-loving girls.
Incredible of course. I didn't expect for it to end with a tiny sliver of hope and it did. It's just what I needed right now when the world of the Stillness doesn't seem that far off from our own. If there's hope there, there's hope here.
Fascinating and super sad. Also, I had to turn it off/scream loudly a few times so I didn't hear the descriptions of women's JAW BONES FALLING OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS. So if you can stomach that on occasion, check it out!
While I'm happy that a more genre-y book got a Printz honor, I didn't LOVE this one. I thought the world building was super interesting but I never fully connected to it. I appreciated the themes but it left me feeling a little . . . meh.
There was also a joke about musical enharmonics that showed up twice but was wrong the first time. I realize this is so douchey, but it did bother me. I'm the worst....
If this book doesn't win the Printz I'll eat my hat. Or someone's hat. I read it in one day. Incredible.
This was so good! Really sad of course, but also so sweet. Florian's speech to Emilia about Halinka being Poland really got me.
A great coming of age story about learning to navigate how you see the world and how the world sees you.
Giant robots in space with a dash of cosmic horror thrown in? Sounds good to me. Enjoyable though I'm not sure I'm invested enough to read another volume.
I really loved this. It managed to be both funny and heartfelt which is pretty hard to pull off when you're writing about murder. Also, great representation for anxious, angry, queer girls with IBS
I love Jane Eyre and so was super excited about this book. It didn't quite work for me but I love that it exists!!
I missed some favorite touchstones: the red room, Jane being plain, and wandering the moors. But Jane and Bertha were so sweet together. And it's nice to see an actual happy ending for Adele for once.
I don't know how to categorize this book but I know I would read 100 volumes of it if the author published them!!
The houses and art are so beautiful and dreamy. The little story they make up to go along with them give you just enough of a staring place to let your imagination go wild. Definitely give this book to anyone who likes fantasy, making up stories, or architecture.
This was wonderful! A robot runs a cafe in post apocalyptic Japan and drinks 80% of the coffee she makes. She has like three total customers. The art is beautiful and the characters are so sweet. It's like a warm hug. If you like Becky Chambers Monk and Robot series you will also like this!!
Some of the landscape and vehicles in this volume especially reminded me of the “Spaceman Spiff” adventures from Calvin's alter ego in Calvin and Hobbes, which really charmed me.
I've been meaning to read this FOREVER so when I started reading Alice Bolin's essay collection Dead Girls and realized she talks about the book extensively, I knew it was time. Luckily, I was on vacation and it was on my Kindle, too. I loved it. It was the perfect amount of creepiness and I really enjoyed Merricat's character and her stuck-in-time-ness.
I love this series and ever since I read it back in 2016 (ack!) and felt like it was time for a re-read. I still love it as with all re-reads, you notice things each time you read. Here are some spare thoughts:
-Miller is SO copaganda-y at times and I didn't notice it the first time I read through. I do like that the other characters push back against his sometimes “above the law” actions. Not that the Roci crew doesn't do some shady stuff...
-Amos has a throwaway line that he'd sleep with Naomi if she was interested and that shocked me because I don't recall any of that my previous read through or in the show. They feel very much like siblings to me so perhaps that was an idea the authors abandoned which is fine by me.
-Sam! I forgot about Sam! It was great to see her and I always liked when she shows up in the next books.
-Holden and Miller's escape from the Eros Zombies is still the weakest part of the book for me. I just think it could be a little shorter. It drags a bit.
-I can't wait for book two because it introduces two of my favorite characters in the whole series: Bobbie Draper and Chrisjen Avasarala!
This was very weird and upsetting! I need more! It has an interesting balance of horror and deep sadness that is really well done. I'm definitely going to read more.
Exquisite. Devastating. You can't put it down. You will think about it for every moment you aren't reading it.
This one is much as I remember it though I had forgotten some of the twists like Rachel being Moneta and the Ousters being chill which made it fun.
Women do move and behave less boobily in this one which I appreciated! I remember some of the TechnoCore stuff dragging a bit when I read it first and it still drags a bit for me, but still ultimately interesting and a good conclusion to Hyperion.
I haven't read Endymion or the Rise of Endymion because I've heard very mixed reviews. Maybe I will this year.
This is a re-read now that the series is over. It holds up! All the characters are amazing! I love how Bray brings up social issues and doesn't pull any punches. So many are still relevant to today.
Such a needed book in the US's fucked up landscape showing the affects of criminalizing and shaming abortion on everyone in involved. Caletti writes such good road trip novels and the BEST families.
I was so excited - for myself and Ryan North - when it was announced he was writing a Lower Decks comic. It's a match made in heaven with North completely capturing the tone of the show and he's so happy to work on a Star Trek IP. His love for all of these series really shines through.
Plus, he is right: you can and should put Dracula in everything. It's never a mistake.
