I think anyone in a relationship, wanting to be in a relationship, and going through a break up should read this book.
Personally, it has helped me understand and prioritize my own needs a lot better.
Has anybody else noticed the word “dash” used way too frequently in Cassandra Clare's books?
So I just stayed up until 4am on a school night to finish this book. I'll have a crappy day but this book was totally worth it.
Everything I like in fantasy. The pacing, the world building, the merry band of thieves, the different kinds of emotional connections, the magic system, the sociopolitical dynamics, and so much more - this book was chef's kiss
I'd been wanting to but putting off reading this since 2012.
Fun read, quite fast paced, good plot twists and ending. If you're in a reading slump, try this.
This was delightful. Absolutely adored the writing style, the characters, the conversations, everything.
Fast paced and interesting. Nothing exceptional but definitely highly entertaining. I also loved the ending a lot.
Okay. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book.
Cons: The first half of the book dragged on for me, way too much smut bruh calm tf down??? What was I even reading, there was hardly any plot and just a lot of wanting to suck dick ugh.
The last few chapters felt so rushed, I think she could've spread out more plot into all the smut -_-
NOW MY BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH THIS BOOK
Nesta gave up her powers but bruh she made herself have a birthing canal that can have illyrian cassian babies awwwwwwwwww. No. Stfu. WHAT WAS THAT? I hated it in ToG when Aelin lost her powers and I will hate it here too, Nesta was fucking badass and extremely powerful and also went through emotional development AND THEN SHE GAVE IT UP? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHY WAS THAT NECESSARY? AMREN ALSO GAVE UP HER POWERS, WHY DOES SJM MAKE EVERY FEMALE BADASS POWERFUL WOMAN GIVE UP THEIR POWERS????? Why????? And also Amren was barely in this book, she became an entirely new species in the last book and Idk I would've liked to see more chapters of her going through struggles too, yaknow? But no, the only times we do see her, she is either being calmed down by Varian “babe we talked about this dont be rude”, fucking Varian, making goo goo eyes at Varian. Her entire personality is no longer scary and powerful or ancient or anything, she is now a slightly grumpy lady who is sweet on that one guy, she became Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Rec. UGH.
SJM has become one of those pseudo-feminist men writers who make women seem powerful as long as it still suits them, never too powerful, no, just enough to give the illusion.
Pros: Absolutely loved Nesta's character development, I resonated with her on quite a lot of fronts as she dealt with her trauma, had setbacks, kept moving forward.
She acts out with people, pushes them away, is an utter bitch often but she sometimes it's so hard not to be, it's so very difficult to get out of your own head.
I adored the female friendships in this book. That is something that was lacking in the first three, I think. The way the three of them keep pushing each other and also giving each other space and time to go slow, at their own pace, the way they are all dealing with their own trauma and struggles but have each other to lean on, the understanding and just general badassery, beautiful. I have friends like that and I'm sick of books not showing female friendships the way they show male friendships, high time that changes.
Favorite bits: Sleepover night, the whole blood rite, when they each shared their past, when they became valkyrie, when Emerie and Gwyn won the blood rite.
The second half of the book was okay.
Honestly, I only finished this because I was 200 pages in waiting for the story to get good, and I thought I can't just not finish a book I'm already 200 pages in. I don't know, I just did not like this.
It's been a while since I've read a book that I just couldn't put down. This was beautiful, heartwrenching, and also kind of felt like reading an anime play out in my head. The author packed so much world building, character building, and more in this one book that I question why fantasy authors can't write great standalones like this, instead of always going for a series. Loved it.
this one is the best book of the series. everything is finally explained and now things make proper sense! you just have to read it! it was AWESOME!
I NEED YOU NOW
Update:
This series has been a part of my currently short life for so long that I do not know how to live without being in the state of waiting for the next book to come out. I had been equally anticipating and dreading the release of this book. Anticipating, because I needed to know the story, and dreading, because then it would be over.
This book could not have been a better conclusion than what it is. Every loose thread from the previous books, every character and story line merged into this beautiful concoction of words. It made me feel the joy, the longing, the hope, the humor, the war, the sadness, the utter heartbreak that the characters went through, and I could not be more pleased. It is everything that it built up to and so much more. I just wish it were longer.
There. Is. Such. A. Thing. Called. Fullstops. Something that people use to keep sentences short and concise for the benefit of the reader's understanding, unlike what the author of this book did, that is, he rambled on and on about the every single event that happened in the period of a decade in precise details with the color of the carpet and the literary significance of it as well as the lunar cycles when things happened and the sentences just dragged on for so long that you don't even know what is going on or how your hair grew three inches since the beginning of this extremely long and seemingly endless sentence.
If you're a masochist like me who reads to torture herself, then by all means, read this book.
Dear book,
I did not like you at all.
Sincerely,
Disappointed reader who went in with expectations.
However shall I wait till next year for the final book :'(
Spoiler: Is it her thing to throw secret weddings at us?
