Title is misleading. There was nothing about what to do if you are socially awkward. Shoplifting?
It's very hard to comment on actual advice, as authors political climate and experience is quite different than mine. Also searching up the author yielded some disappointments. Oh well.
But this book is a nice read for broadening your outlook. Just don't have this as only information.
I grabbed a copy at NetGalley at random and I was not disappointed! Very distant future wholesome solarpunk young adult adventure vibes.
After starting to read, I learned that this book is second one in series, but let me assure you this is quite nice stand alone work. Even though there are mentions of first books events it does not impact reading experience. Loved the world building. Some characters seemed a bit flat, but it's always nice to see a book where romantic aspects even though present are not most important. The journey is the important part. Coming in terms with yourself, the world and your place in it (versus what parents want) is the main theme. Very young adult (but in a good way).
Good, entertaining, funny, but somehow seems that something was lacking. Maybe next books, maybe there was not intended anything more than nice action packed thriller. Anyway good read and starting the next book in series.
Maybe what “is wrong” is that it is so short. But maybe that's for best. My melted brain read (read!!! not listened!!!) this book quite easily, this is the first read book in god knows how many years.
Ak, dievi, kā man besī, ka grāmata nenoapaļo stāstu!
Paša goodread interpretējumā “it was ok” un vairāk tur neaizvelk.)
It īpaši sākumā. Nav tā, ka daudz lasu literatūru latviski, bet pēdējos latviskajos darbos to nemanīju. Nez. Tīri interesanti būtu iedot pazīstamai dāmai (korektors+literārais redaktors) palabot, nesaku, ka tas nav darīts, bet man šķiet, ka tur var labāk izteikties tīrī teikuma struktūra un vārdu lietojums, un kas nu tur vēl svarīgi.
Nobeigumā - bija forši izlasīt, labprāt izlasīšu turpinājumu un citus auores darbus. Kā teicu - superīgs potenciāls. Man pietrūkst zinātniskās fantastikas, kuras pasaule ir Latvijas teritorijā. Un vispār varētu latvieši vairāk rakstīt manā mīļākajā žanrā. It īpaši tik ļoti priekš normāliem cilvēkiem nevis dēļ MāGslas.
Oh, it takes a special book to not finish it. This was very special book. All the philosophical blabbering about how utilitarianism is the answer but never even mentioning how the heck can we make people follow one simple moral system. Maybe nice for those who like theory without any practical appliance. Even the science parts were far in between.
It seemed that I will ask Audible to take this book back and give me my money back. First chapter was terrible. But then they calmed down and started to talk mostly normally. One of the most sincere and entertaining books I have had. Especially in this genre.
Yes, the book is chaotic, the book is filled with advice being from terrible to brilliant and the book is mostly their life stories and experience than self help. And it seems it was meant to be like that. Trying and actually doing things is messy and very subjective. Thank god there was no 12 universal rules of how to be happy, it would be just lame. Putting fucking in every quote was eye roll inducing but bearable. But sincerity, kindness, openness and may I say love pouring from their stories is heartwarming. And I could really appreciate their dedication to failing. It was even inspiring. And maybe I will take a thing or two from this book.
I thought the book will be something more than this. I got good recommendations for it after all - philosophical, wanting to read it again when finished... But no. It's a fast paced cheap sci-fi. Started really good but most of the book was action ending chapter with cliffhanger and the end was very weak. Book is ok, easy to read. Just don't expect much.
While this book contains some really nice gems, overall it falls a bit short on this very important topic. While book title (reconciling the erotic and the domestic) hints on some sort of answer, it doesn't give any single clear answer. Get some good therapist seems the solution, but we don't need dozen examples of her therapy sessions with clients to know that. (Maybe some need.) Don't expect any plans of how to or real suggestions or anything beyond some examples, some ideas and some talking about importance of erotic. There is no advice. But on other hand - if you feel stuck, there are some really nice and fresh ideas, some comfort that you are not alone. But that's it. This isn't a bad book. But not great either.
Hard to comment. Topic of this book doesn't bother me - I'm white in very white country. Yes, enjoying the white privilege. And while the book offered the much needed perspective on racial injustice (so there is pay-gap, important info), I am not convinced about all the arguments used. The childhood experience of parents not providing something, something being one. Show me one person where parents gave everything needed, black or not. Too personal, too little science/data. But as the topic was quite new for me, book gave some important insight. Loved British point of view, too many times topics like this are America-centric.
Amazing sci-fi in it's true meaning (at least how I understand it) - it's not only about space travel, about postapocalyptic survival, about strange new beasts and societies... it's about possibilities, about meaning behind power, about creating and destroying civilizations, about what we could learn from strange ideas captured in this fascinating genre of science fiction.
This book was ok an would deserve only two stars. Extra star for some good content you don't find lying around just like that. The “just bunch of some articles” style was troublesome because no topic was looked at thoroughly. Some parts were just silly (no, I don't want to know personal opinions of Goop staff.) There was hardcore science people and energy healing people, all in one book. Somehow I wanted more consistency.
Even though I rated “only” 4 stars, this is one of the must read books. The book itself isn't that great as the topic is important. After reading this you won't be able to look at another scandal across all the WWW the same. Ins and outs of how scandals are crated, why and how there is basically no protection against it. Book tries to be optimistic on a note of “knowledge might help” but this book has been published in 2012, that was before fake news epidemic. I think humanity is doomed because we love scandals way too much.
God, I wanted to like this book!
But it's just ramblings about a topic using smart sounding facts and ideas which doesn't make real sense. I thought that it was just my impression form his lectures, the book, with structure where it's better seen what point he is trying to make, will be better. Wrong! “There is A and it's connected with B that's why C” is the style of logic there. Oh, and drop the ANY science or psychology doctor ideas regarding this book. It's self help. And even some self help books by not-a-professor-who-once-was-in-the-Harward people contain more science, more precise science and more up to date science! Might make some interesting ideas along the way but mostly just huge disappointment. Maybe will try to finish later, but probably not, not worth it. I regret that I bought the book.
/audiobook. His voice is annoying but style engaging and passionate. Might explain his popularity.
Better than I thought! Book is insight in her world, growth, career, activism and everything what comes with it. It was way more sincere than I expected. Not sure if a good book on feminism, it shows some problems in nowadays world, but it is more story based book, though maybe then it works better. I'm not a usual humour loving person, her jokes weren't too annoying, but part about stand up scene and change in it did explain nicely how jokes are different. Yeah, is there really a need for jokes who put others down? (No.)

Whoa! That was interesting! We sleep so much (but mostly not enough) but still there is a lack of general knowledge about sleep. Ok, sure, we now that “sleep is important”, but hey, then the exams come and it is not as important. Or that party. Or that project which really needs finishing. Or...
It was shocking to learn how dangerous is driving when feeling sleepy. And impact of sleep on memory! And the myth that old people don't need as much sleep is just a myth. Fascinating stuff. Not really much of practical help, even though decent amount of tips included, more on general knowledge about different aspects of sleep.
