In 2014, I rated this book one star. I truly did not see what everyone liked about this book and I hated it. I was 15 at the time and was the same age as the main character but didn't relate to him at all.
In 2020, I decided to re-read this book because I feel like I could relate to the main character more at age 20 and a half then I did at 15. It made me think back to my school days and my childhood trauma and this book made me so sad. To say I had traumatic teen years would be an understatement and this book just brought everything back to me.
New rating: 2.75 stars
didn't know what the book was about before I started reading but all I knew were a bunch of people online saying “don't read the book/watch the movie without knowing what it's about because it's very upsetting and triggering” and the way this book is planned is that you should NOT know what it's about before watching/reading it. I can't explain why without spoiling it. I would say to only read/ watch it if you can handle dark topics and disturbing crimes, if you can't then don't read it
Well damn... this was so good and it took me this long to read it wow
I read this because I wanted to watch the movie, and yes I say that about every book and never end up watching the movie.
3rd re-read and still as amazing as ever.
This is a book you need to read more than once, it feels like a new story each time!
On the first read, it shocked me.
On the second read, I could understand what is going on in the story and it felt like I was reading a whole new book.
and now on the third read, nothing is new to me but the story is still sooo good.
better than the first book and the characters felt more real, a great cast of characters but i do wish i felt more connected to them
not really a memorable series for me honestly but my feelings might change in the future idk, it seems like a fun book to re-read so i might visit it again in the future :))
My local library did a blind date with a book thingy and i picked this book because it sounded cool and then I unwrapped it and saw it was this book... the book I've been avoiding since it got popular on booktube years ago. I thought I might as well read it.. so I did.
Excellent writing and good characters but it just wasn't for me sadly
it was cute, adorable and whatnot and the characters felt more real to me in 30 pages then what any other author can write in a 5 book series but i wish it had more horror.
It felt like a filler story but it was good!
What a mess
Buuuut it did end the way I wanted it to. Was it a good ending? No but it was the one I wanted.. sort of
3.75 stars
Ellen hopkins is one of my favourite authors but this book wasn't my favourite but still extremely good. It had me shaking.
3.75 stars.
Would've been a solid 4.5 stars if it didnt have the unrealistic and unnecessary instalove
one of the best books i've read in a while ! ! !
Very dark subject matter but i was smiling ear to ear when reading the last 50 pages. Gotta be one of the best endings to a book i've ever read oh my god
first of all, I didn't know this was a real story.. I thought this was fiction until I picked it up. It being a real story somehow makes it worse because the person we follow in the story, aka the author, is very.. I can't explain but girl wtf
this book makes me want to travel, not far but still travel. I'll catch a bus to Sydney or something
I would've liked this better if I was 40 and VERY bored.
Some stuff in this story sounds fake. There's no way that she met that many people who said such inspirational quotes to her like they were a random npc in a game.
It's not realistic.
I want a REAL travel story. My REAL travel story is that I went to Queensland when I was 9 and nearly got punched by a old man for no reason. That's realistic. What's not realistic is that this woman met people who were Jesus resurrected. Weird.
The story that the whole world knows is finally being spoken from the victims side of the story, the most important side of the story. Chanel Miller is a survivor but also a hero, I cant imagine how many lives she will save with her words in this book and in her statement.
Dont click on the one star reviews for this book if you don't want to lose hope in humanity. Just a bunch of trump supports and Brock turner supporters wetting themselves over the fact that the victim has an opinion and a voice.
ive read 500+ books but this is unlike anything ive ever read before. I read this because I didn't think I would like it (because I HATE books set in cars or road trips) and I just wanted it to get off my TBR but oh wow.. didn't know I would end up loving it like I do.
Its such a small book but the characters were so well built that it felt like ive known them forever.
I loved everything.
Its not 5 stars because it didn't give me that feel and I felt like the ending was a bit rushed, would've loved if the book was longer too!
cant wait to read more from this author!
a really quick read but it packs a punch
i love survival stories but i feel like short survival stories like this book shouldn't exist. Survival stories need at least 500 pages. The longer we know the characters fighting for survival and the longer we are immersed in the survival situation ourselves (reading it not actually surviving it lol) then the more we can connect and immerse ourselves into the pain of survival (if that makes sense?)
longer survival books make for good endings idk
reading children books to relax before bed is supposed to be relaxing but here I am reading 72 pages about a rabbit nearly dying on every page
I read the Velveteen Rabbit yesterday which is also about a rabbit trynna survive... why do all these children book authors have it out for rabbits so much. What did they ever do to the human race?
anyways RIP Peter rabbits father, I would've eaten the pie he was killed to be made in but still :( rip buddy :(
3.75 stars :)
the start was soooooooo slow, I started this book 5 times over the years but couldn't get past 50 pages but I finally pushed through (because I want to see the movie lol) and im glad I did!
I was spoiled but everything still took me by surprise!
2nd time reading it and yes it hurts just as much as the first time. Actually going through a grief process right now
One of the best books i've ever read. An instant new favourite and a book i know i'll read over and over again as i age.
If you like The Hunger Games then you'll looove this. So many similarities but also so uniqually different.
You'll go crazy reading this, it feels like your walking until you collapse and die, you get so tired reading this and you can feel every ache and pain the characters are feeling.
It's a short book but it's also a Stephen King book so the characters are so well written and you feel like you've known them for your whole life. Some of these characters will stick with me for ages, especially McVries. He is one of Kings best characters.
it was entertaining but I just cant handle the main character.
She left kittens in a car to go party.
She is “not like other girls”
She picked a fight with a toddler.
She throws herself into insanely dangerous situations and gets mad at people who worried for her.
Yeah, she was going through grief and probably wasn't thinking but it just happened way too often.
The other characters had so much personality while the main character was so bland, how??!??
