i love Joe Hill he is a king (no pun intended) but this wasn't for me.
Wasn't fun to read, the horror was short lived and the story was blurry to me as it was so rushed
I did see the message and i respect it but the story just wasn't enjoyable. It felt very lacking of anything. It felt like if you gave AI the words -Wolves, train, morally debatable- and pressed enter and it gave you this 30 pages jumble.
very juvenile.. even for a YA book. Tried too hard to be scary.
Also very confusing and questions are never answered.
My favourite book of all time is Stolen by Lucy Christopher which is about a kidnapping and after I read that in 2014 (and every year afterwards) ive been addicted to kidnapping stories as they really intrigue me. I love knowing what the kidnappees mind is like during being held captive and life afterwards. I love knowing why the kidnapper did what they did.
Ive read a million kidnapping stories and this has to be in the top 3.
Spoilers but not really? ahead!!
The ending kinda.. yeah im gonna forget that happened.
The worst Rick riordan book I've read but it's still decent. Not good enough for the final book of a series, too many loose ends and it felt rushed. Also the books are repetitive, all they do is fight giants and survive.
anyways but
DNF at 89%.....
I have a small amount left to read but it's impossible. Reading this is like walking on shards of glass.. pointless and painful.
I spent $16.99 on this book through audible and i can't even return it because i'm locked out of the account so not only was this a bad book but also a financial loss UGH.
Better than the second book but still blah
I want to dnf this series but I got it as a gift and I feel bad if I didn't read them all so yeah
So much happened but also not a lot if that makes sense? how does this series have two more books.. like what exactly is there left to say or add?
the one thing i love more than reading and collecting books is this game. It's a long ass game but i've played it 8 times over and can never stop thinking about it. It's my favourite thing in the entire world and i'm so happy i got the deluxe edition of this art book!!
also this book about art concepts made me cry LMAO
it just made me think of the game and story and it has me bawling
started off sympathising with the monster but half way through i honestly wanted him dead too lol
he scared the shit out of me
First read in 2015 and then saw the movie this year so I just had to read it again and I wasn't as upset as I was the first time I read it but I understood more than I did back then so I enjoyed the story more
The first half of this book was phenomenal!
The second half... I didn't like it.
It would be a 2 stars but the writing was so beautiful and I've never read anything like it. I want to read more from this author :)
ehhh disturbing but also basic so it wowed me but also made me super bored at the same time idk how to feel
I'm gonna re-read this in the future because I read it but I felt like I didn't take it in, my mind just wouldn't work today so I'll re-read it next month and it will most likely be a 4 star lol
2.75 stars.... idk man i like the plot and the message but the characters were so unbearable and it did ruin a lot for me. It was hard to read because the characters. The characters felt very unreal which sucks because the situations in this book are very real but.. idk its hard to explain but a book like this deserved better characters to tell the story.
also naming a dog 6:30??? go to jail
minor spoilers but i don't think they ruin anything. Just kinda revealing a relationship that happens but it was very predictable from the start of the book so read ahead with caution.
i love you Morgan Matson, i truly do but i can't defend you on this book..... honestly wish i could go back in time to unread this book.
plot:⭐️
characters: Minus a million stars
pacing:⭐️
first thing i want to rant about is the characters. A bunch of evil little teens who have never been disciplined in their lives.
now for a little serious rant.
Toby was the WORST.
Toby treats Wyatt like an object. Ok u have a little crush on him but he's not allowed to reject you? he let you down gently and let you know that he had his eyes on someone else.
Wyatt goes to date someone else because hes human and is allowed to and toby loses it. She rips the friend group apart because WyAtt iS HeRs even though he does not like her in a romantic way.
“you stole wyatt from me” AGAIN HE IS NOT AN OBJECT, no one accounts for his feelings ever.
Wyatt was painted as a bad guy for a natural thing. Damn i'm sorry he doesn't share mutual feelings to you Toby... that must make him so evil right?
All these characters have to tiptoe around Toby and don't see an issue with it. ‘its just how toby is” shes a sociopath bro. Someone needs to tell her off. I don't understand how this entire friend group walks on egg shells around toby but again don't see an issue with it. I can't even explain how bad toby was in this book. Honest to god, if she was real she would probably be a serial killer.
also she treats waitstaff rudely on purpose..... yeah shes a sociopath for sure.
Bree needs a hug. She needs new friends. The only other emotion i felt for this book other than anger was sadness. I just wanted to save bree from these insane people. She didn't deserve any of the treatment she got :( she didn't need to apologise for anything but was forced to because Tobys insane fantasies matter more apparently.
the main characters suck too. they sat there and thought about their feelings towards each other while a dog was painfully dying at their feet. “i wonder how he thinks about me” ok think about that later, the dog is have a seizure at your feet
Clark is a very unrealistic character.
pretentious idiot.
3.5
I actually really enjoyed this but there is some flaws.
Cordelia is the main character but.. why? she's boring me and has no personality while every other character does. Why is the story focused on her?
I switched between the physical book and audiobook for this one, it was great until the audiobook gave Magnus an accent that I can only describe as JARRING. It jumpscared me more than once. Truly terrifying.
I hated TDA but loved CCs other series so I had high and low hopes for this series and im glad it met the high ones!
anyways next book pls
3.75 stars
I actually liked this book.... after it took me years to read TDA because of how much I hated it, I had low expectations for this series but im surprised.
I love her other series and all her other books (including the iron trial series, I loooooove them) but TDA wasn't for me.
im excited to read the 2nd book! I cant afford it right now but when I get paid im zoooooming to the store to get it
I had one issue though. I thought Cordelia as a character ( a main character at that ) was kind of bland. I didn't enjoy reading from her POV or like her presence. no hate but I was bored with her, I cant wait to see some develeopment for her in the 2nd book!
The most unique book I've ever read. EVERYONE needs to read this, doesn't matter if its not your taste, it wasn't mine either but I gave it a shot and it was worth it.
edit: just had a nightmare about this book and i cried so rating raised to 3.5 for scare factor
not his best work i've read but a 3 star stephen king book is still better than 5 star books from other authors lol
This took me so long to read but I'm glad I read it!
Her life was unbelievable and it makes me wonder how she did all this and didn't get exhausted.. I was exhausted just reading about her life.
Hopefully we all have a love like Valerie and Ron did
I think I would like this more if I experienced being an adult a bit longer. I'm only 21 and this book made me feel like I was 13.
The writing confused me at times, and there was a chunk near the end where the story kind of got blurry?
I liked the book, I love reading about the ups and downs of a relationship but the writing really threw me off multiple times.
I'll come back to this when I'm way older!
