The best little black classic I've read yet!
It's comforting but also scary to know that humans really haven't changed since this book was written in the 1600s.
“it is a most wonderful comfort to sit alone beneath a lamp, book spread before you, and commune with someone from the past whom you have never met”
Ok i re-read it and i'm bumping it up to a 5 star from my previous 3 star rating... so much emotion and love in so few words and it makes me want to buy all the work from the author

I might re-read this soon to understand it better. It fit so much emotion in 55 pages and yeah, would love to come back to this soon!
How a Ghastly Story Was Brought to Light by a Common or Garden Butcher's Dog
really didn't like the writing but the stories were decent enough
a common theme of death and justice and birds lol
[1st read]a really fun read! Wailing ghosts was the worst story in it though :/
-
[2nd read] raised it to a 4 star. Highly entertaining
this is part of the little black classics challenge I'm doing so I guess I had to read this
not sure what to think, communism has good and bad parts just like capitalism does. I'm not on any side tbh.
Read this again and ehh.. still bad but not as bad as the first time I read it.
all I took from this book is that they're were
[re-read] ive only read about 30 little black classics but out of all of them.. this one is the BEST one,

[first read]
I might update this to a 5 stars later when I let the story sink in
Honestly so interesting and gunnlaugs death had my jaw hanging, it was so sudden
and helgas death was also so sudden and unexpected and she died knowing she loved gunnlaug more than anything :(
[re-read jan 6th 2022]
again, the first three stories are banging but the last one is just weird and gross.

read- jan 1st 2021
I loved the first 3 stories but the last story made me so uncomfortable :/
just a bunch of people mistreating women and killing everybody they see in sight
I do know many forms of torture now because of this book so my knowledge has expanded and I will be a tiny tiny tiny bit harder to beat in trivial pursuit.
would be a 1 star but the writing was splendid
i ignored this book on my shelf for years because red books just turn me off reading them.. idk why. Also minimalist book covers have the same effect so this book just looked ugly to me and YES i do judge a book by its cover.
But my history with Ugly Book Covers Are Written Masterpieces has yet again shown up and provided me with a solid 4 star read ! !
i didn't like everything and i usually would say this was an average 3 star book but it was so damn entertaining and fun that i can't not rate it 4 stars like WOAH
reread: so last time i was sick and didn't remember a single thing so i read it again and yeah it was average, i will read the second book and maybe watch the show? Better than the grisha trilogy lol

no rating because my brain didn't take anything in, I restarted the book 3 times and still nothing. I finished it but couldn't remember a thing.
I'll re-read this later in the year and give it a rating then!
it has a nice writing style though!
whole series read like a middle grade and the characters act like 14 year olds, not adults.
I bought these books a while ago because i wanted something creepy to read but all i got was annoying and bland characters and tacky stock images strewn between pages
thank god i don't own the rest of this series because i know i would never read them like.... ever.
It's too childish and predictable. It follows the same formula all early 2010 YA's do and it doesn't make for a fun read
a random old lady that is friends with my family heard i like books so she comes to my house and gives me this book.
Ok i'll just put it on my shelf until i can donate it because i have no interest in it.
Old lady comes back a couple months later and asks if i read it.
I have not.
I feel pressured to read it now in case she comes back.
I read it and wonder what the fuck is wrong with this old lady because this book is the most disturbing and horrifying thing i've ever read.
trying to think of a way to tell her i enjoyed the book (which i did not) without questioning her sanity.
seriously though what did i just read. I read disturbing books all the time but this is the first book that went into detail. EXTREME tw for detailed rpe, murder, gore, just.. everything.Gory stuff in movies and shows is ok because you can see that everything is fake and made up and all an act but having to read about gore is just not for me. Your brain has to conjure up these images being described to you and it's emotionally taxing. I didn't want to read how women got sxually assaulted with knives and plungers.
When i say extreme detail i mean EXTREME.
so fair to say this book wasn't for me and i've discovered that i have a breaking point when it comes to disturbing books.
i read the first 50 pages a few years ago and the subject was too heavy for me to read at the time but i finally got around to reading it and wooooow.
it's set in america in 1959 and its about the first black students attending an all white school. I'm australian so i didn't learn alot about american history but segregation in america was one of the things we did learn so i'm happy i had some info before starting this book.
I grew up in australia. Back in 1999 it was very white. I didn't know black people existed until 2011. I didn't have internet, The tv shows i watched were australian or british (aka very white) and i never saw a black person. ever. When i found out that people of other colours existed, i was confused because why haven't i ever seen them? A year later i found out that racism existed. i did not learn about any black history until i was 17. thats CRAZY. We were finally taught about the racism in america in 2016. TWENTY SIXTEEN!
My sister was born 2003 and i grew up thinking she was white (we have different dads) and its crazy how my childhood was so white and i didn't see any other colour even though it was right in front of my face. My sister is aborignal australia, shes from the OLDEST culture and civilisation in the world. She experiences racism every single day. From family, friends, school. She got in trouble for reporting the racism she endured at school. SHE got in trouble. Its like what Sarah endured during this book. The white people want POC to stay quiet and out of the way. Its clear to see its still happening today as i have my sister to tell me about the many slurs she gets called everyday.
Phenomenal writing and i can't wait to read more from Robin talley!!
lower your pitchforks, this book was just not for me.
I started reading this in 2016... it took me 4 years to read
