[read in 2016]
As a mute girl, I really needed this book. Every mute person is different and experience life differently from other mute people so I didn't go into this expecting to relate fully but I related to the main character for most of the book.
I was diagnosed with selective mutism at age 3 but I was getting better until my dad died when I was 4. I'm 20 now and still have only spoken to 6 people in my entire life.
The reason I'm posting this now is because I'm starting a book tube channel to help me through my mutism. 20 years of silence has been tough and its been so lonely so I need to start forcing myself to get better. I can't wait to post videos!
4.25 stars
one word for this book: HOLYSHITWHATJUSTHAPPENED. It is a word, it will be debuting in the Oxford dictionary any day now
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Characters: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pacing:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I haven't read a book in so long that had me turning the pages like my life depended on it. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time. Tried to put this book down so many times to do my daily tasks but it was impossible. My jaw hit the floor so many times and I audibly gasped like i was a overacting actor in a movie.
This book is CRAZY. You think you know what's happening and then it's flipped on you. And then flipped again. And again. And again. Absolutely insane.
Can't recommend this book enough. It's truly a masterpiece.
also this book proves that the mean girls trope reigns superior
only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because the last 100 pages kind of felt out of place and different from most of the book. It felt off and I didn't like it but the ending was still AMAZING
[edit: i just found out this is the same author who wrote behind her eyes that turned into a netflix show?!? i havent seen it and didnt plan to but EVERYONE loves it so i might just watch it now!
ALSO THIS BOOK IS GETTING NETFLIX ADAPTED WHAT]
I went into this not knowing what it was about and i kinda liked it that way.
I was never made to read this in school because we didn't study American history bc why would we?
I'm australian so we were made to read books about the Aboriginal dream time, history and equally depressing stuff.
anyways, the book had great characters and it was super sad, idk what else to say other than you need to read it for yourself
Edit; changing my rating from 2 stars to 1 star because of how horrible this author is. please research this author before you read her books because the stuff she has done... you just cant seperate the art from the artist in this situation
I don't think I've read a story about a trans person before so I was excited to read this book but.. I didn't like the characters or story. I own another Meredith Russo book so hopefully I like that one better!
bit unsure on my feelings towards this book.
it was very fast paced and entertaining but the second half of the book had a different tone than the first half and I mean that in a good and bad way but I just don't know how to explain it.
Its been quite a while since I read a book in a day. This book was just so addicting.
I don't suffer from bad agoraphobia, I can leave the house but only if all my skin if covered and only if its not too sunny (I live Australia so its always sunny)
If I don't cover my skin, or if its too sunny, I'll be inconsolable. I have to cancel doctors appointments all the time because the sun is out. My fear of the sun is keeping me inside.
Ive been diagnosed with agoraphobia, and I have been getting worse with it, but I don't have it a bad as some do, like Solomon from this book.
i saw this in the bookstore and flipped to a random page to see if the writing style would suit my tastes and it ended up being the page with the huge plot twist so...
well would you look at that... i finished a book while DEEP in a reading slump
I read this because i wanted to watch the movie but now a huge bill just slapped me across the face so now i can no longer afford to liiiiiiive let alone stream or rent a movieeee
so i guess i aint watching the movie
3.5
it would of been a 4.5 star rating but something felt off. I can't explain it.
Anyways, huge trigger warning for every type of crime.
Rape, murder, bullying, harassment, drugs, etc. Definitely one of the darkest books I've read
As someone who has had a parent die from cancer and currently has the other parent dying from an illness (and possibly be soon diagnosed with cancer) this book hit me so hard.
I was only 5 when my father died from cancer and you wouldn't think I have regrets because I was so young but I do. I wish I talked to him (I'm mute) instead of just clinging to him and hugging him, he tried to get me to sing on the karaoke machine with my sister but I refused but that didn't stop him from trying everyday!
It's crazy how I would still have my dad today if doctors did their jobs. They diagnosed my dad with skin cancer and said they would cut his toe off, the delayed it and delayed it and even told my dad it was getting worse and they would cut it off soon but they still delayed him and wouldn't tell him why. They told him to deal with it and be patient. Next thing they told him is that he had a couple months to live because his toe didn't come off. They had no excuse to why they just didn't cut it off, they were rude doctors who didn't even feel sorry that he died.
Now my mother, she has MS and is in bed 24/7. She's currently in hospital with broken bones and internal bleeding. She's getting checked for breast cancer and it's most likely she has it. I'm her full time carer and it's horrible to see a parent dying right in front of you.
She has maybe a couple years left and then she will join my dad in heaven.
This book hit me too hard and emotionally wrecked me.
very fast paced and entertaining!
Really weird that every character is trying so hard to be adults.. I mean yeah they are 17 and 18 but it's obvious the author is trying hard to make this spin off series a LOT more adult themed.
One of the toughest books to read because of the subject matter: rape.
This book doesn't whisper that it's about rape. It tells you like it is, rape is a terrible crime and shouldn't be avoided in conversations.
People can't say the word rape when talking about it. Just say it and acknowledge that it happens.
DNF at 60%
I never DNF books but wow.. I just couldn't read this for a second longer.
It felt like a middle grade book but then it would hit you with extreme NSFW moments that reminds you this is a mature book.
this book feels like it was a book once but someone just scrambled the whole story and now chapters and paragraphs are out of order and doesn't make sense.
EDIT: dropping my rating to 1 star,, I really hate this book lol.

This book was really hyped but what for? I felt like nothing really happened, you could skip the first half of the book if someone gave you a 10 second explanation of what happened. The first half of the book was so slow and nothing happened, the book could've been half the size.
Also just unrealistic but that's what books are for, right?
The characters did not seem real, I don't know how to explain it but they had so much personality but also not enough at the same time.
actually made me recoil and cringe at times.. it took disturbing to a new level. The art is so phenomenal and actually might give me nightmares lol
didn't enjoy most of the stories.
Cassandra clares was predictable (out of all people her MC could've chosen.. she chose her step cousin?! well its Cassie Clare, that stuffs expected)
this book reminded me to pick up more Jennifer E Smith books so im looking forward to reading more from her :)
cool art but story...ehhh.
I've read from this author before and it was waaaaay better than what i read today so hopefully it gets better in the next volumes?
had no idea what was going on at any given time but I had fun - too much fun.
So addicting and fun to read ! ! !
don't care that Aidan is a mass murderer. I would die for him.
started good but then got bad. nothing more to say really.
also i was in hell while reading this.. outside in an Australian summer.
I was grossed out most of the time while reading this.. I just don't want to think of this book ever again lol
This book has made my day.
Such a sweet yet sad story about love and death that I would love to re-read in the future
I found this sweet song about this book and I loooove it!
