an important read, especially for Aussie teens or anybody older who needs a reminder to stay away from drugs FOREVER.
i'm very anti-drugs and extremely anti-alcohol as i've seen multiple family members be ruined by these substances.
i don't know what it is about Australia and drug culture but it seems like it's the only way to have fun here. I live in a popular Aussie city and the night life here is the only thing to do here. That and our city for some reason is very into fitness so if people don't like to exercise then the other option is drugs. I got lucky that i'm athletic and find many hobbies in fitness.
i was so hyped for this book but wow oh wow it sucked so bad but just like everyone else i will point out that yes it made some great points on humans and power and yes our world is very fastly approaching an outrageous dystopia (oh who am i kidding? we're already there)
About the not dating thing in this book... already a thing in Australia and lots of other countries. In australia, if you're on welfare due to being disabled or unable to work.. you can't date without them kicking you off welfare or cutting your pay so much that you can't survive. “oh you went on one date with a man? well ask him to pay for your bills, rent, and food”
I heard this happens in other countries too. Just basically making sure disabled people stay poor and don't ask for any more essential stuff that will cost the government money.
I am a believer of free speech, we have nothing without it, we cease to be humans without it so i do find our world right now a bit.... yeah people shouldn't spew hate but it's when people have reasonable opinions and they get kicked from school, work and any future employment because of things they have said is just an evil thing. Forcing others to have the same opinion as you (like this book) will never turn out good. No one will switch sides to agree with you if all you do is yell at them, take away their jobs, doxx them all because they think differently about something.
I went into this not knowing what it was about and i kinda liked it that way.
I was never made to read this in school because we didn't study American history bc why would we?
I'm australian so we were made to read books about the Aboriginal dream time, history and equally depressing stuff.
anyways, the book had great characters and it was super sad, idk what else to say other than you need to read it for yourself
It was too short for the story to have any impact really... if King did what he does best and made this book 1000+ pages then i just know this would be an iconic book but yeah too short
maybe spoilers ahead? idk read at your own risk but i don't count them as spoilers imo.
the scenery and plot in the book reminds me of season 1 of The Walking Dead video game. Trapped in a market, have to make a break for it to get stuff from the pharmacy, people in market are turning against each other and main character has a child to keep safe with them. Obviously The Mist came out LONG before the game but it was cool how similar they were lol
didn't know what the book was about before I started reading but all I knew were a bunch of people online saying “don't read the book/watch the movie without knowing what it's about because it's very upsetting and triggering” and the way this book is planned is that you should NOT know what it's about before watching/reading it. I can't explain why without spoiling it. I would say to only read/ watch it if you can handle dark topics and disturbing crimes, if you can't then don't read it
My local library did a blind date with a book thingy and i picked this book because it sounded cool and then I unwrapped it and saw it was this book... the book I've been avoiding since it got popular on booktube years ago. I thought I might as well read it.. so I did.
Excellent writing and good characters but it just wasn't for me sadly
the thing with King books is that they have their own rules when it comes to my star rating system. A 4 star read from King is 100x better than other book that wasn't written by king that i rated 5 stars.
Even a 3 star read from King is better than most of the 5 star reads from other authors i've read.
This book wasn't even being considered to be read by me for a while, it was pretty low on the list of what i wanted to read and i wanted to read maybe 10 more King books before i got to this one but I had this period where i reeeeeeally wanted to re-read The Shining but i promised myself i wouldn't re-read anything this year so the obvious choice was to read the sequel to The Shining... this book.
I'm glad i did because its a great great novel and story but as a sequel? nah. If you read this hoping for the feeling The Shining gave you then you've picked up the wrong book. This book had no essence from its predecessor. This doesn't mean it's bad but this book is it's own novel and holds up wonderfully by itself. It's just a completely different feel and experience.
As King said in the author note, he wrote The Shining when he was an alcoholic and he wrote this book while sober and i applaud him. He incorporated sobriety into this book and it shows how far King has come since his “the bottom” days. I'd rather a 3-4 star read from a sober happy man than a masterpiece from a sad alcoholic man.
Major respect from King.
i will say it again, yes this book is a 4 star read but translating from my King rating system to my normal one... its like a 8 star read.
If you don't read King then you're missing out!
DNF at 50%
i made it a mission to get to at least half way before DNFing and by god i did it and i'm proud of my strength it took me to get there. I am not strong enough to put myself through the rest of this book though so i'm not so perfect after all.
I never DNF but being tested for cancer this past two weeks and being told to brace for bad news and also getting surgery.. yeah it showed me that life is too short for books that rely on a overdone aesthetic to get by. I won't be DNFing many books because i like the finish books but i will sprinkle a lil DNFs here and there for the worst of the worst :)
thanks to my sister for buying me this book from the goodness of her own heart, it was shite but thx <3
Every character in this book needs to be curb stomped and spat on by all their resurrected ancestors.
This book was a waste of time.
Like yeah i get it, what was i expecting going into this book if i hated the first one? i expected nothing. I got the second book as a gift and had an obligation to read it as the book cost $22 and i just can't let that 22 go to waste.
i'm gonna give this book away to a charity shop as it's a fairly new book and won't go on sale for a while in any bookstore so i might just make someones day
I've read two Ruth Ware books this year and i'm actually in love with her.
Didn't like a certain part of the ending (which does majorly impact how i view the book) which does lower the star rating to a 4.. everything else is a 5 star read though!
i'm a pure genius so i guessed who done it and how it was done but it didn't take away from the book at all, i still enjoyed the twists!
such an infuriating book. It's a book about men just treating this poor woman so badly and she is just a shell of herself by the end of it.
I want to actually fight every single man in this book. The whole time i felt like screaming “LEAVE TESS ALONE” and yet men keep coming back to abuse her even after they say “i never want to see you again tess”
Tess just never caught a break and i wanted to give her a hug the whole time.
It would be a 3 star read but the ending gave me a sour taste in my mouth.. ruined the whole story.
