I gave up after two hours, the n-word is just used too much. It's not like this was written in 1857, this was 1982. Even if you want to be historically accurate you could just use it in the dialog, but no, even the descriptions use it.
Ugh. I knew I was in trouble the second time something was described as “like out of a bad movie”. When you write that twice in the same chapter you might want to pause and consider whether it's because you're writing a bad book... The writing is just overly descriptive and amateurish.
My least favorite of the trilogy, FAR too much time is spent just describing people just running around with a real lack of actual plot.
Pirates, Space Marines, interplanetary intrigue, crowd funding a spaceship to find a kidnapped girl, and Vomit Zombies... What more do you want in a book?
I liked what was there well enough, but with 9 minutes left in the audiobook I'm thinking “There is NO WAY he wraps this up in 9 minutes, this is going to be Part One of Two. It sucks that I'm going to have to wait for the next one.!”
Then, over the course of 8 minutes they find the find the home world of the alien civilization they're looking for, the alien colony is saved, they go back home, and every one of the consequences is wrapped up in a way that makes it seem like the series is over...
It has real “Poochie died on the way back to his home planet” vibes, like halfway through this book he got bored with the whole idea of this universe and just... decided to stop...
Weirdly seems to completely ignore traditional dramatic structure. It's 3/4 exposition and there is no climax. Most of the book is just spent training Ciri.
And don't get me started on “Dan-dilly-in”...
