Characters all a bit meh and unlikeable. A bit moralistic and philosophising. Struggled to find the characters believable.
I enjoyed learning about the lives of people in the public sphere, what makes them tick and what influences them.
I found this book amusing and reflective by turn with sad bits in there too.
Worth a read.
It took me a while to get in to the book, but I think that was more where I was at rather than any issue with the book. I did really get in to it eventually and enjoyed it.
A slow burner of a book. It took me a while to get in to but once I got about half way I was sucked in to the story and couldn't put it down.
a wonderful history of a part of the world that i dont often learn about. thank you for educating me.
Informative and engaging. Not my usual reading material but Palin writes in a way that is accessible to someone with very little knowledge of the subject.
East rereading and a story to get I. To. Not going to be a world changer but enjoyable enough.
I loved this book, have read it twice now over the years. Engrossing and heartbreaking story with a hopeful ending.
Beautifully written and evocative. Made me want to revisit Morocco and learn more about the culture.
The premise of this book is good, and several of the biographies are uplifting and interesting, however many of them feel quite heavy and academic to read- as if they were written for an academic audience rather than a more general readership.
Stephen Fry manages to take a subject that could be dry and dull and make it interesting and accessible, no mean feat. I read the book whilst on holiday in Greece which helped me enjoy the book a little more
The final in the series, probably my least favourite, I just couldn't buy in to Atretes and Rizpah's relationship- so many unhealthy traits in them
Both, it seems like quite a toxic relationship, although I'll admit to seeing it through 21st century eyes.
Other than that it was good to pick up the characters stories and see the different strands of the story coming together.
