Fascinating history of a music scene that wasn't. Wonderfully engaging, and informative. I thought I was quite well versed in UK independent music, but many of these bands somehow fell into a mid-eighties void and are well worth discovering.
Whilst the myspace links have had their day, the book can lead you to some great discoveries on Youtubemusic and bandcamp and I will be buying the Bog Shed boxset on bandcamp today.
As a summary of a long career, this feels very brie and lacks depth once it hits the eighties. The takeaway is don't deal make any deals with Simon without a lawyer present and witnesses.
An overview of the exam objectives, guides you to a lot of Technet pages. Could do with a lot more depth and examples.
A compilation of myths, folktales and stories of night monsters. A book full of wonderful illustrations and whilst it doesn't go into great depth, it does spread its web wide and list some obscure creatures alongside the more common tales.
This series was a must read alongside the readers digest mysteries of the world and the Usbourne Ghosts, UFOs books in my childhood.
Incredible, i wish i had read this when it was recommended to me by a friend when i was at school. It's a fantastic novel, alice in wonderland trapped in a pit of their own self despair and disgust as the hero. Wonderful read, so much darker than i imagined.
The writing style brings the writer's fictional voice to life, as you hear the author's alter ego speak, whilst the words come alive in your eyes and resound into your ears.
A beautifully cynical take on the future of space travel. Privatased and exploitative, with a gritty desperate adventure.
This an account of Deborah's love for Ian Curtis, despite everything, even knowing the tragic end, even when it's so obviously broken there's hope. There could have been so much anger and rage in this biography, but it feels like a fair account and has some lovely detail, and the pain, regret is very apparent. The lyrics and unfinished writings are an unexpected bonus. I don't think the full suffering of those left behind by suicide is shown here. There will always be the question of if I said or did something different or was there a bit earlier: would you still have decided to go? The weight of this burden is not completely revealed at the end.
Almost like Roald Dhal's tales of the unexpected but from an Irish pen and with a twenty first century slant, and smoking. Oh and swearing with a beautifully crude, descriptive and at times poetic use of language.
It's a second world war resistance story in a Paris consumed by Surrealist art come to life. Fantastical creations plucked from art and scribbled across the page in a page turning adventure. It ook a me a few pages to get my brain into gear, but once I got my perspective on the world and found my footing I thoroughly enjoyed it. Exquisite Corpse.
Bob writes in such an amiable style, its a joy to read and becomes quite gripping as the plot unfolds.
As a fan of Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster books I read this homage with some trepidation, whilst the characters, ridiculous social situations and references to previous misadventures are all there. This is a very charming addition to the series, however it has a few allusions that burst the safe bubble of J&W's universe and may jar with some fans. I enjoyed it, understanderbly the wit is not the same, but still some good laughs.
An very readable and entertaining dip into the world of Mike Scott, his music and his influences.
Excellent mix of horror and thriller. Very much a book that belongs in its time without becoming dated. An interesting mix of characters and a plot that weaves a web of horrific wickedness. I wish I'd read it quicker but it was a bit heavy to be my cart around book.
