Revised - from 3 up to 5 stars
I reviewed this book 10 years ago, pre children. Both my kids love this book, and I love reading it to them. It's a firm favourite in this house!

Three stars may seem a bit low for a book that I am fully aware is a classic childrens book. Unfortunately the first time i read this book was when i was 23, so the reason I give it three stars is just because I don't have that childhood link to this book, so reading it for the first time at that age, it really just didn't “get me” in a way I'm sure it would have if I had been read it from a very young age.
What to say about this tome?
I LOVED IT.
Truly epic. Thank goodness Sanderson is a prolific writer, as I don't think I could wait for a long for the next!
What an inspirational read!
This isn't my usual reading material, i tend not to read non fiction and particularly don't read stuff about individuals. But I picked this up as a 99p kindle deal and was so glad I did. I found it so so interesting, and Hadfield has such an inspirational work ethic and personality.
Seems like a neat idea, but the graphic novel feels more like a brief introduction more than an entire book.
Artwork is pretty good, but all in all, I felt it needed more to it.
Might well check out the novels at some point.
Well that was some crazy intense trip. A very different reading experience, and one where there's so much more to discover after you've finished. I really enjoyed the unique journey you go on with this book - MUST be read as a physical book, there's just no other way. Time well spent.
I read this after finishing the series up to book 12 of the Wheel of Time series. I really enjoyed it! I'm not sure i would recommend reading it as the first book you read of the series, I think it would make a lot more sense once you have a grip of the world and the characters, and the other characteristics of the series. I'd love a further addition to this book to bridge the further years of Lan and Moiraine. Highly recommended, along with the entire series!
A fun book! Story fit for a 6yr old with the added excitement of lift the flap, a winner here. Plus museum based books bring me joy :D
A strange tale, but from Neil Gaiman what more would you expect.
There are illustrations, but this is not a children's book. It's dark and eerie, in content and in the illustrations. A dwarf man goes in search of treasure in a dark mountain off the isle of Skye. But it's not that straight forwards. Neither are his motivations.
The illustrations are incredible, and I love how at times they genuinely do the talking as part of the story. Very well done.
3.5 stars rounded to 4. A bit too teen fiction for me and nearly DNF in the first hour or so, but it did start to intrigue and I enjoyed seeing where the story went.
Another great instalment of the Infinity Blade series, building on the characters and relationships started in Infinity Blade: Awakening. I love Sanderson's writing style and think I enjoyed this one even more than the last!
Looking forward to more in the future!!
A vivid account of one person's experience of the 2004 Tsunami.
This book moved me to tears, the simplicity of the illustration and the words has an astoundingly profound effect.
A great little novella, complimented greatly by the artwork. A nice little addition to the GOT world.
I enjoyed the extra info, but felt it could have been so much more. Also not wholly convinced on the style, where it's partly in the story, but then partly looking at it from the outside e.g. “in the Harry Potter books”, and with extra info from JK Rowling herself. I was kind of hoping it was going to be written by someone from the HP universe, in character. Same applies to all three of the newly released books.
An unsettling folk tale with stunning illustrations another corker from Andersen Press.
Wowsers. I can see why people have been raving about this book. Dark, gritty, fast paced and action-packed. I loved the way it was written. I really enjoyed not knowing where it was going next, though it didn't feel like twists and turns for the sake of it.
Brilliant book!
As a person who has owned a Vulva and Vagina and all the other parts of a female reproductive system for 33 years, I feel a number of things after reading this book:
- Ashamed that there were so many gaps in my knowledge
- Grateful I learnt so much
- Empowered to know about my own body, and to have more information about the scope of “normal”
- I feel some grief at how much those of us with vulvas and vaginas have to go through
- I feel empathy and solidarity for people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community and what having/not having a Vulva or Vagina can mean for them
- I feel Empowered to teach my own children
Recommended for everyone.
A jewish girl in Poland, trained to be a witch by her grandmother. Demons, contracts, a new life in America. This short story goes far, and is dark whilst it does so.
If you don't mind a foray into the occult this is worth a read.
Really interesting! But hard going... So many names and mothers and fathers and sons and daughters and gods and names and more names and places. Hard to get your head around...
Better review to come!
