Way slower and less interesting than the first book. Less action. I am less emotionally involved.
Fossum has a very pleasant writing voice. Mild and warm. She dives deep into the thoughts and details of every character's lives. There is relatively little suspense, no blood curdling horror, or endlessly proteacted action scenes: she writes psychological portraits of people in difficult situations.
I listened to the audiobook on Storytel, read by David McCallion. His performance is respinsible for a probably higher rating the when I would have read it on paper. Also, I tried two other books in the series perfirmed by others, but McCallion has ruined it for me - only his performance fits Munro.
Hm... ecofeminisme..
Terrifically well written. A plausible thought experiment. Dystopic. Original. A rather convincing plot, although not terribly well balanced.
Funny tempi. Whelan and especially Bryce get stuck in bad places for a loooong time - the story seems to be stalling a little there. Other events fly by, transitions happen in an instant - like the killing of Bryce and the murders by Whelan.
Yes, the heroe gets killed. Rather unceremoniously, too, Shocking, but not in real hardass politics. So it seems fitting as well.
All in all a surprising read. Unusual, a little rough around the edges, but surprising.
Same nice cast, less humorous, a simpler book than # 1. Dialogue a little less original, more repetition.
This book started out very witty - men being robbed telling the robbers how bad a job they are making of it - but soon it turns into an action oriented adventure story, as per usual. Not bad, but not great either.
But they are a nice cast of characters, and the plot shifts a few times. So, enjoyable enough.
Compared to his other books, this one is much less gripping. Started reading it three times over the years, never finished it. So a DNF. Was this his debut? If so, he learned a lot after this one.
The neurological part of the amnesia in this book seems utter nonsense to me, and the final neurological developments a convenient but rather lazy solution. Hence, the outcome of the plot was a little thin.
But the characterization and the buildup of the story was very nice. Interesting main character. A good read, even if the plot could have been better.
Goeie YA. Spannend. Politiek nuttig.
